b,121I hear you on this too though. I'm sort of really into mid-70s to mid 80's mall-chitecture. I'd really like to know who designed the facades of all those bulky old department stores like JcPenny or Sears.

font class="post"1b,121b,121yes! there are some really cool old dept stores in la. theres a massive sears on olympic and i think soto or thereabouts that is a monolith. i like that building. theres one in e. hollywood too, though not as big. those emptied out robinsons or mays or whatevers along wilshire in beverly hills. further up wilshire, one of them is converted to lacma! i like thems. bullocks bldg is kinda a lil too ostentatious for my tastes, but i do enjoy looking at it and its right in the neighborhood.b,121b,121as far as flicks of stuffs here goes! img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /1b,121b,121brolly hutb,121img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/poppa_shig/brollyhut.jpg"1b,121its a umbrella upside down or something. the sign out front, not pictured, is like a hand or something holding an umbrella. food isnt that good tho.b,121b,121b,121b,121daves burgersb,121img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/poppa_shig/daves.jpg"1b,121this is the spot that reminds me of winky dinky dog. never eaten here so i cannot verify if they have wine ho cakes. but i loved that movie when it came out. and this spot reminds me of the movie. and therefore, i like this spot! img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /1b,121b,121b,121donut hole. b,121img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/poppa_shig/donuthole.jpg"1b,121i like that u can drive thru it. i guess i am simple like that. its quite enjoyable! img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /1b,121b,121ice store on central. couldnt find a pic online. but its basically a square lil building in the dumpy part of central ave. aka "south" central ave. yes, where the name comes from. anyways, its just a square building painted white and it looks like it was one of them old dairies out here where you could drive up and a dude would load a thing of ice in your car. b,121b,121la river. spaceghost coast to coast took me here and the feeling you get when youre down in the middle of it, with that doo doo smell and stuff. well, u have to experience it. it feels cool being surrounded by that much concrete. i cant really explain it. u just have to go.

font class="post"1b,121b,121You have good taste! And I loved "Hollywood Shuffle" too. I kept reading your post and thought Winky Dinky Dog was familiar but couldn't remember what you were referring to...Then I saw you mention "ho cakes" and I snapped back to that memory, hahaha...b,121b,121Is that the same place J Dilla got his donuts from? That is a dope design...
no dilla got his thing from randy's donuts. or kings 3 or something like that. but most likely randys cuz that other one has birdshit all over it and its falling apart and looks horrible.
There is a club in Los Angeles called Maverick's Flat that has a fairly standard exterior but great interior architectural design..b,121b,121Also, the Fatburger design is cool too, haha...(the one painted turquoise with the red letters)..
wow...I hope it's not near any fault lines...That is such a great design - especially the building on the right which looks like it's built into the rock formation...b,121b,121Some of it reminds me of Vito Acconci's work too..
you beat me to it with the disney concert hall, unconsci.b,121i don't know s**t about architecture, but that's where i bring friends who are visiting from back east.b,121another ridiculous gehry in l.a. :b,121img src="http://picdit.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/untitled111.jpg"1b,121 b,121img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/postmodern.gif" alt="" /1
font class="post"1b,121b,121I got to check her exhibition at the guggenheim in ny in 06!! Was incredible!! The sketches, her models, documentaries and i'm pretty sure there was a pretty cool car design as well....
b,121The Pantheon in Rome is still jaw-dropping, centuries later.

font class="post"1b,121b,121b,121I love the modern stuff but the pantheon blew my mind. I think my first or second day in Rome I was just out wondering around and kind of just stumbled on it because I wasn't really following a map. b,121b,121Whats really cool is going there in the rain because it comes in from the ceiling and the acoustics are crazy.b,121b,121I spend a lot of lunches there when I lived in Rome and miss the hell out of getting to see that kind of stuff on a daily basis.
font class="post"1b,121b,121this looks like space pirate captain harlocks spaceship/submarine thingie. all it needs is the skull and crossbones on the front! img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /1
But yea... some of those buildings blew my f*cking mind. Im really amazed at some of these... i really had no idea. Thanks alot guys...b,121b,121Yea Rick... the binoculars right across from the transvestite crying 50 foot clown. haha... definitely a what the F*ck moment.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Judging by that pic, that is one of the worse buildings I have ever seen. I would like to hear the architects defense for that design. It would have to be the best functioning college of art and design in the world to justify a big chunk of cheese towering over the neighborhood.
font class="post"1b,121b,121Looking at the top pic I was ready to atttack this thing too. But the bottom pic view from above is really nice. I guess it is a high end resort. Maybe in an old quarry. For a high end resort meant to be over the top impressive they did a nice job.
"Give me a lot of money and I will design a great building. Give me more money and I will make it disapear." That may have come from the designer of NYC MOMA.b,121b,121Some things I have seen that I like:b,121Vancouver BC Anthropology Museum on campus. Building completely disappears.b,121b,121Seattle Central Library, Koolhaas. I am not a fan of the Paul Allen museum. b,121b,121Portland OR in the pearl district there is a little one story corner building that is still a machine shop. I think it is called Percision Bearings or something like that. Perhaps the corner of NE 10th & Davis. Windows on 4 sides, rounded entry, the most perfect little deco building I have ever seen. b,121b,121SF CA, the new De Young, just toured it. The center gardens in the light wells are a high point. The sculpture garden is a bit of disaster. I wish the museum with the planted roof across the way had been finished. b,121b,121LA Disney concert hall, Gheary. I like it a bit more than I did the Guggenheim in Bilboa.b,121b,121Chicago Manadak (sp?)b,121b,121PA, Falling Water. I had seen thousands of pictures, seen the tv show. Seen other FLW buildings. Falling Water was so much better than I expected. b,121b,121We wanted to see Habitat in Montreal, but it didn't happen. It is way off the beaten path.b,121b,121Bilbao Spain, there is a Calvatrava (sp) bridge which is the only thing by him I have seen. From what I have seen in pics of his work he is way more important than Gheary. b,121b,121Barcelona, The German Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe. After 3 days of Gaudi, this is such a perfect breath of fresh air. b,121b,121Washington DC, Vietnam War Memorial, Maya Lin. I want to see the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery AL too. b,121b,121Too hard to pull pics on my moms slow computer.
b,121 I really liked Gehry's Experience Music Project design in Seattle too.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Whoa. You're the first person I've heard this from. b,121b,121I think it is, by far, one of the ugliest buildings ever designed. I'm not as anti-Gehry as some I know - even though I think much of his recent (last 10 years) work is pretty gimmicky, i.e. "look at me! No right angles!" but EMP is an embarrassment and mar on the beauty that is Seattle. b,121b,121img src=http://www.blogwaybaby.com/uploaded_images/EMP-755331.jpg1
