Quote:/font1h,121b,121/font1Quote:/font1h,121b,121b,121b,121I am not sure that the "hip" rock, art, performance type communities is drawn from it though. I'm not seeing a lot of crossover there, although there is surely some. There's definitely more Wire influence among the former hip-hop DJs that went headfirst into club music; I'm sure some of them probably would've dissed the stuff a decade earlier.b,121 b,121b,121h,121
font class="post"1b,121b,121I'm not saying that the Wire influences the local hip music scene, just wondering how much people's love of The Wire influences Strutter's perception of Bmore. b,121b,121The Wire is one of the most talked about things on this site, people don't talk about Bmore club as much as they used to -- and unlike on Pitchfork and (I assume) indie-rock discussion boards, I don't see people here talking much about Dan Deacon, Beach House, Celebration, Ponytail, Thank You, and other Bmore rock bands. b,121b,121So instead of hipness, maybe think "street cred" -- is Baltimore getting a shitty-city pass from the Strut because our beloved tv show (about how defeated and shitty the city can be) comes from here? b,121b,121h,121font class="post"1b,121b,121no; Baltimore has a lot going for it actually, urban blight notwithstanding.
I love Baltimore. Dangerous, yes but character out the wazoo. b,121My two least favorite cities in the States are Camden, NJ and Gary, IN. Haven't been to either in a few years so they may have changed but back in the day they were not nice places.

font class="post"1b,121b,121coincidentally I listened to this record twice on (hearing it for the first time in years) last week on my train ride from Toronto to Bmore. b,121b,121sounded good!
Quote:/font1h,121b,121 I've been to plenty of burnt out urban shitholes with not one iota the personality and substance of Baltimore... the aforementioned Bridgeport and New Haven CT spring to mind!b,121 b,121b,121h,121
font class="post"1b,121b,121The worst thing about Bridgeport is that it could be--and should be--so much more than what it is. It's got this horrible legacy of botched or straight-up squandered opportunities.b,121b,121Pistol-wavin' New Haven just plain sucks, though. Except for the pizza. (Pepe's, holler!)

font class="post"1b,121b,121What were you doing in Tacoma? I grew up in the North End and also went to college there at The University of Puget Sound. The North End was always very nice and a great place to grow up. The city is not very exciting, but I would really not call it "shitty." There are LOTS of places that are much worse.
font class="post"1b,121b,121This isn't a city....it's a place for hitch hiking serial killers to hide out in. b,121b,121h,121font class="post"1b,121b,121I had a run-in with The Law there if you can fusking beleive it. Nothing happened, but jesus I was scared.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Nah that can't be real. b,121b,121h,121font class="post"1b,121b,121oh, believe. this was circa 94, so things may have changed, although Fast Food Nation was written since then and describes it much as I remember it.b,121b,121I lived in Colorado Springs, which itself offers plenty of shittiness to contend with (counterbalanced by some beautiful scenery), and my gf at the time had relatives from Greeley. We visited twice, they visited frequently, the stench of shit and rotting flesh twas in the air. b,121b,121h,121font class="post"1b,121b,121Oh, it's true. b,121And the recordz suck too. b,121b,121h,121font class="post"1b,121b,121 img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cos3ve.gif" alt="" 21b,121b,121These two towns are the pits.
font class="post"1b,121I laughed when I rode the bus through Renton once...I was actually looking for the cemetery where Jimi Hendrix is buried but I got so tired of being in Renton I just went back to the Seattle airport.. img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/latte.gif" alt="" 21 Actually the whole town of Renton gets a late pass...
b,121I was going to try to stand up for Dallas, but the shit isn't easy.
b,121
b,121There is a lot of good shit going down here on many levels, but you really have to know the city to find it. It's fusking huge and spread out, and you're not usually going to stumble into some cool shit unless you have a guide. It is here though, I promise.
Beauford West - South Africab,121b,121b,121b,121the white dudes seem not to like foreigners over there.b,121we almost ended up in jail and escaped by jumping on a passing car.b,121sounds like a movie scene but it is true!
font class="post"1b,121b,121Maybe ... but I've found two Pucho records and a Sonics 7" in Dundalk over the years so I kind of like the place.

Hey,b,121b,121I nominate Saginaw, Michigan where my grandparents on my mom's side resided (until their deaths a few years ago). It looked like the world turned it's back on the place. It's a shadow of what it was back in the prosperous 70's when the auto industry was boomin' up there. Now, it looks like this:b,121b,121 img src="http://www.egr.msu.edu/tosc/saginaw/images/galladebefore.gif"1 b,121b,121 img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1334/617203439_e64c4c5afb_b.jpg"1b,121b,121Also, I give honorable mention props to:b,121b,121-Camden, NJ.b,121-Trenton, NJ.b,121-Paterson, NJ.b,121-Gary, IN.b,121-Youngstown, OH.b,121-Detroit, MI.b,121-Elizabethtown, NC.b,121b,121Peace,b,121b,121Big Stacks from Kakalak
During my college years I knew a gang of cats from Buffalo. b,121b,121I got to hit a Univ of Buffalo Hip Hip jam, a couple of bars ,and was treated well by my homies' fam. It was the first time id seen BET. This was the late 80's though. I cant imagine what has happened.1b,121Out of all the kids that came from Rochester,Albany,Syracuse, and Buffalo, the Buffalo cats had way more swagger than the rest.b,121b,121The Buffalo Wings game is off the hook in Western NY because of that city. b,121b,121I would hit up the museums out there as well. Its far from the "shittiest".IMO.

I must said, it's one of the most regressive, racist, narrow-minded, and insular cities where I have ever lived (and I'm from North Carolina). font class="post"1b,121b,121I gotta say there's something appealing about this photo. Not saying I'd want to live there, but I suspect I'd rather live there than, say, along the endless stream1of strip malls we have along Route 40 outside Bmore. In other words, I'd take depressing with character over soulless-suburban depressing.
you want a challenge, try to find a vegetarian meal in Atlantic City.b,121b,121but that's another city that I find depressing in a soulful way... especially if I've recently watched the movie Atlantic City.
