This isn't a "How much do you make in a year" type of thing, but I'm just wondering because I wish I was making more money. Seems like the whole working in an office thing is not the way to really achieve your financial independance.Thoughts? What do you guys feel is a good $$ amount to make in a year? I know Raj has a sweet deal.

I actually got into a conversation about this with my wife the other day. We were talking about making more money and its endless cycle. You make more money and your standard of living is raised, you move into a better house, you buy a better car, go on nicer vacations, which is fine for a while, but then you want more. So you make more money, leading to bigger expenses, and then feel like you need even more money. Really its not about how much money you make, but how happy and content you are with what you have.

I make good money but I can't stand the job half the time so the truth is that I would rather make less and like what I do . Unfortunately bills have to be paid so I'm not leaving this spot any time soon.

This begs the question though, how much do you need to be at this happy place? It's a $$ amount in the end.

This is so true. Half the schitt we buy and consume we don't need. And it's also true in lots of circumstances that you end up bing so busy trying to make that money that you end up giving up doing other things...
So in the end , you don't even enjoy the money you're making.

I recently went from making about 60 a year to less than 15, and I've gotta say I'm much happier for it. I'm freelancing and taking on only clients I dig, versus being some no talent corporate middle class/age rich fucks design monkey.

Money isn't everything man. I paint. I restore furniture for a modest profit. I make alot of music that no one will probably ever be bothered to listen to. I hand print fabrics & wallpaper in an era where no-one cares to.

My advice to EVERYONE is to find your happiness, and let the money roll in (or not) from there. Fair enough, some weeks I'm living on united nations style rations, but I'm healthy and happy and doing what I love, when I want to, every day.

Which is a subjective thing, its all about your needs and wants. Someone might be happy making $35K a year, another person is not happy unless they are making $350K. You have to look at the tradeoffs, my friends who are happy making $35K are teachers with a lot of vacation time and live simply. People I know who make six figures are in the office 12 hours a day and some weekends, ball out on dinners and ten day winter vacations to the Swiss Alps. Neither would trade their lives with the other because they are content where they are presently. Sit down, figure out a budget and make it happen.

I had a nice over six figure position about this time last year. worked for a major financial hedge fund in new york. Paid well but I earned (and thats an over statement) every dollar and they made sure of it. coming in at 7am. Putting in 12 hour days, 55-60 hour weeks. Worked on corp to corp as well. Was treated like a new york fire hydrant. But sucked alot of it due to the nice paycheck. No time to make music, listen to music (though I was buying records like a madman) and my fam. did get a chance to pay off college, and other bills. Son was born in November. They didnt want to give me two weeks off so I can spend time with my newborn son. So I quit. collected unemployment for two months and now have a permanent role for a much smaller company and far far less than what I was making. But I dont have anybody looking over my shoulder, breathing down my neck, or disrespecting me. I get in around 8am (not cause I have to but because I want to be in early) and end my day at 4:30. go home, chill out with my son, listen to records, and actually have time left in the day.

Not sure if there is any advice mixed in with my rant. but right now money is a bit tight in our house, barely above minimum payments on shit, only buying records cause im selling tons of vinyl crap on ebay , we try to go out once a week , bringing my lunch every day to work and im telling you I couldnt be happier in my life.

    PEACE

sheeeeeeat. Don't you have a second house in Quepos and run around with dudes who carry suite cases full of hundreds of thousand of unmarked US bills?

I don't make shit. But luckily the cost of living is pretty damn cheap down 'round these parts.

Your synopsis isn't totally accurate. I'm still sitting at a desk 60 hours a week not really making that much money.

True, but you can't get all anti-consumerist about it, some people like to buy things they don't need, if they want to build thier lifestyles on that so be it. And some people plainly enjoy making money, enjoy being in the office and making deals, don't really like taking vacations, etc. That's all well and good, if that's what the person wants more power to them.

I am only 4 years out of college and I am making more than my parents or my wife's parents ever made. That said I am by no means rich. I do own a home but I am also supporting my wife through grad school and paying off crazy student loan debt. My wife graduates this May and a second income will be a huge help. Like others have said the more you make the more you spend. I like nice things and I am horrible at saving money so I will probably never make enough to be truelly comfortable, but I am really happy with my life so that is all that is really important.

    you still at Burton? Nate.

last time I saw you I was making chump change dj'ing on tour in England. haha

Since then I've been a bullshit assistant at Wells Fargo Investments, went straight from that to making $1000 a week under the table driving porn chicks around, and then from that to making $1400 a week under the table editing audio for a big porn website. On top of that I was working some other shit on the side making serious coin. I spent lots then, but man was I happy. Bought good wine whenever the fuck I felt like it, ate out at dope restaurants every night, spent $500 on clothes every time I shopped. I didn't care about money, it was nice to not worry. I got some nice things to show for it, nice art prints, a Montblanc pen with a diamond in it, haha. LOTS of records, dual 23" apple monitors, a new macbook, blah blah.

Now I make shit again but I'm poised to make more money soon so I'm not trippin, I'm pretty happy no matter what, anyways. I got a kid on the way and I'm getting married this weekend so life is good regardless.

  • I love my job sometimes, and sometimes not.

I was fairly compensated; but, then i got some promotions with some bullshit raises.

Now, I am underpaid, and looking to J-E-T-S JETJETJET.

yeah i have about a year & a half left at this job and i'm movin on up. don't take it the wrong way, but i think it will be "easier" making more money single than it would be married. i keep saying all i want to do is get a nice/alright apartment and a really nice car. but i can't really be sure the way the housing market is in the district right now. i may go for something right outside the line since my mom's a realtor in MD. i'm just babbling, but it's been something my mind has been on. like for you guys who made a substantial increase in pay, do you find it better to upgrade the house as well? or just stay within something "normal"? i guess it's different for me too since i'll be moving back and starting new back home.

All the stupid junk that people buy has to be made by someone. If nobody needed or wanted anything or any service than nobody would have jobs. So if 90% percent of the people want to spend their lives at the mall and that keeps 95% of us employed either building, distributing or servicing that junk than Im fine with it.

I work at a non-profit, make a little over $43K, and love it. I don't ball out on records or vacations, or anything for that matter, but I'm doing what I want to do, learning more every day, and working towards accomplishing my life goals. I also feel great about what my foundation does. It would be nice to be able to buy more expensive records, but I don't really sweat it.

I also don't work more than 40 hours unless I'm clocking overtime, and get to do fun stuff like direct radio shows and go to the Newport Jazz Festival every year.

And $43K isn't that bad. I have a spacious one-bedroom apartment in a happening part of Boston (with a deck) to myself, prepare most of my own food but eat really well, buy enough records to keep me constantly supplied with new music, and can afford to take the lady out for dinner and drinks. All in all, I'm a happy man.

My brother is a stock broker in San Francisco, makes over $100K, and says he has little heart attacks each day. But that's what he wants to do. To each their own.

Yo on the pr0n tip, did you run into the Digital Bishop? He did the beats on some Norwood's Inner City Cheerleader flicks that I... heard about somewhere.

The beats and tunes were corny but lyrically amusing.

I work for myself, and do ok, but they only ever give me 3 month contracts at a time, which make laying out big bucks for anything a bit risky, as I technically only ever have 3 months max left of work...

Still, been at it 8 years now with about 10 months out in total (not voluntary). I already owe most of what I earn though. Such are the choices I've been faced with. When I was single, financially life was much easier.

It's like in Jaws, where they get Jaws to the surface by fixing barrels to him. Once you got the three barrels of Mortgage, Wife and Children... You ain't swimming anywhere, son.

No matter how much $$$ you make, you're always wishing you could make more. Even somebody as rich as Oprah Winfrey probably wonders how she can increase her cash flow.

My base salary is average because after all I am still classified as a web developer / designer... even though I do much more than that.

It's the bonuses that really push shit over the top and the company is doing well. Plus, my wife (who is the company accountant) and I got company ownership in lieu of salary the first couple years I started working here. So we can kick back and expect a decent yearly profit share. Plus I get a lot of Perks as well.

I've been on both ends of the spectrum and I have to say making money is way nicer. Money split my parents apart. They lived the high life on credit and it came crashing down on them. It came to the point where my dad was so broke he couldn't pay electric. It was embarrassing. So I have made it a point to keep from that and make that scrilla.

yeah I knew people, started out working on set as a production manager/assistant for a director homie of mine Van Styles. Did that for a few shoots and met one of my closest homies Danny Dukes(RIP) who ended up getting me that driving gig later on that paid me well. During that gig I met this dude that did netvideogirls cause I used to bring him girls, and he wanted me to come work for him so I did.

And the anniversary edition starwalker is no joke, I love that pen.

    Truly.

My dad worked in a chemical factory for a multi-millionaire. One day he went into the office and broke all the pencils and erasers in half because he said the staff were getting through them too quickly. Dude was 60+, he could have retired years ago.

Dude commuted more than 100 miles each way and was always in for 6AM.

    Dickhead. Life is too short.
