Sorry to keep harping, but I thought Children of Men was damn powerful, and the scene with the soldiers stopping fighting at the end hit me in the gut, more than anything I've seen in the last couple years.
My worst for the year was probably Da Vinci Code, although I wasn't expecting much. Biggest disappointment was was the Darjeeling Limited. Wasnt the worst thing I've ever seen, but just really mediocre....

Yeah I thought it was an excellent film that also caught what London could turn into brilliantly. However I'm with ODub on the ending - if the film had finished those couple of seconds earlier it would have felt far more brutally powerful - instead it was more like an AI tagged on happyish ending. I would suspect studio involvement having played a part but the rest of the film doesn't feel like he was hindered in what he wanted to do.
Not to mention, some of the most technically innovative/difficult/longest/flawless one shot sequences ever filmed...
That alone is enough to earn respect for any movie buff.
I don't really get this. A single performance of virtuosity doesn't, per se, redeem an otherwise flawed project. I actually liked "Children of Men" (though have no desire to ever watch it again in its entirety) but I just don't buy this "OMG, that tracking shot alone made the film worth watching!" I dug the tracking shot in "Goodfellas" but that was surrounded by a film that you didn't need to qualify by making mention of the tracking shot.
There's actually three of those kinds of shots in the movie, which makes it all the more ill. And I didn't say it would redeem the film/end world hunger/wash your car/whatever, just that it should earn your respect as a movie buff.
Think this is the first time I've seen this mentioned in the thread? Be interested to know what you didn't like.
I'd agree with quo. Maybe I'm not smart enough or hip enough to get it, but there was nothing really entertaining about this to me. I think I fell asleep through part of it. I'm sure someone could argue for days about why it's so cool or important, but it did nothing for me. I appreciate Lynch and thought there were some interesting parts in the movie, but whatevs.

Nice one. I gave it an hour and then put it back in the envelope. Maybe I'll give it another go sometime but there is a limit to what I'll put up with; this movie was too much of an investment at the time, and I am a pretty big David Lynch fan.
I picked up Children of Men thinking it looked like it would be really cool... BORING! I couldn't understand 1/2 of the dialog, and the baby shit at the end was just an eye-roller for me. It felt like it was trying so hard to be smart that it forgot it should be trying to be 'good' also.
i guess i can see how people liked it, i was just bored and unimpressed.
balls of fury was pretty dissapointing. it looked like it had some potential, but it was like one long stretched out joke. It had some pretty dull moments and the plot line was lame.
disagreeing with quo...
hot rod was fairly funny. Maybe I was in a good mood when we watched it, but I laughed out loud. I think it might have been because my girlfriend was looking at me like I was crazy for laughing. The part where he fell down the hill and it kept going and going had me dying. It was bad/dumb, but in a good way. I think my expectations were low, so maybe that's why I liked it so much.
(inland empire fans are grumbling "he hated inland empire, but liked Hot Rod?????!!!)

Yeah fair enough points by both of you. I was just intrigued just in case Quo wasn't familiar with Lynch's catalogue before he watched it. I must confess that I have no interest in watching it again anytime soon but did enjoy large portions of it - particularly the final third. Treated as a regular movie it's undoubtedly full of flaws but I found it pretty fascinating as a Lynch experiment. I would question a lot of the critics who truly raved about it though, a lot of the reviews had a slight Emperor's New Clothes feeling about them.
i saw no reservations. With the sound off, on a plane..
and it was still torture!
WRONG. Catherine Zeta Jones as a chef is pretty much the hottest role I can think of for her, plus Aaron Eckhart can do no wrong. You have to be a foodie or wanna be foodie to be into the movie to begin with I think...kinda like live action Ratatouille with less cooking, lol.
and I just remembered I saw "The Davinci Code". That one was pretty shitty, nothing redeeming at all. I thought it was hilarious that they completely glossed over so much (masonry, the illuminatti, etc) in the final scenes.
I thought it was hillarious how Hanks did his math and calculations. When they had time he sat there and pondered (like it actually took him time to figure things out), but then..."Oh shit, a guard is coming" and all of a sudden he can figure everything out in half the time.

yeah, same deal -- my gf and I watched this with ultra-low expectations and were pleasantly surprised. Enough so that we watched the deleted scenes (we usually don't do this) and got two laughs outta those bigger than anything in the film itself. Obviously Hot Rod is no masterpiece, but better than (and different from) the average post-80s SNL-related film.
I'd like to add Ben Stiller's "The Heartbreak Kid"
I wasn't expecting much, but it was worse than I expected.
It had its moments.... typical farrelly brothers humor, jerry stiller was pretty funny, nice shots of san francisco.
the ending was so lame though.
I actually thought the female lead in this one (blanking on her name) was hilarious. Once she was incapacitated and the movie became all about Ben Stiller avoiding her/cheating on her with a boring, uninteresting lady, it went downhill quick.
I was just intrigued just in case Quo wasn't familiar with Lynch's catalogue before he watched it.
Oh I got love for Lynch...and I definitely believe some movies you have to endure instead of enjoy and you get something out of them. Inland Empire I really tried to work with it but I simply couldn't deal. Maybe in the far future, but probably not.
...and Children Of Men was one of my favorite movies of the year! I mean, it reminded me of some modern Kubrick shit! I'm amazed some of the critique on it here. That said it's been on HBO non-stop lately and I really don't want to watch it again, some movies are best enjoyed with one viewing.
..and as far as the Saturday Night Live related flicks my bong broke last month so there's a pretty valid reason why they didn't work for me.
...and Shoot Em Up...wow...I can't believe they'd make a film like that today...wow. I'm not uptight about guns at all and even being tounge-in-cheek that shit was atrocious.
beowulf - the whining freak with the sensitive ears was ridiculous, as was the build-up to angelina's boobies arising from the water
30 days of night - the clich?? last 2 mins runied an otherwise pretty decent slasher flick
i am legend - will smith acting is a joke
transformers - even the ultrahard "transformers move out" dialogue couldn't make me ignore the corny lovestory that always infests superhero films
death proof - tarantino's 20 minute girl chatting scenes need to be retired
planet terror - not that crazy for a straight post modern style excersize, and why didn't he do more damage to fergie? the helicopter scene with the girl cheering "woohoo" was cool though
300 - the massive slaying and piling of bodies got tired
that's it, i'm getting ready to watch you can count on me once more...
was 300 2007? I couldn't even finish that shit. AWFUL. I was watching Universal Soldier last night on TV and that shit was 100000 times more entertaining that stupid ass 300. I give it 300 thumbs down.
i really really liked children of men. im a sucker for good blocking tho and this flick was downright choreograhped! thats hard work and really satisfied the film school kid in me.
hot rod? man that shit was awful! i didnt finish it nor could i finish this movie called waiting or waiter or some such. not the felicity joint but the one with ryan reynolds and like every half ass teen actor in the game.
i also couldnt fell asleep during that pirates of the caribbean movie.
and shoot to kill, i dont know. it was just too over the top for me. i like monica belluci's boobies but i didnt like that she was a wet nurse. kinda creepy.
i slept on 3:10 to yuma. i dont even like westerns but this one was kinda decent.
wins what? in almost every other case, I would hold my tongue and not speak on that which I do not know, but I don't need to see this to say it should NEVER HAVE BEEN REMADE.

I think it was this round of the classic battle between Nicholas Cage and anything resembling art. On my card, he's 23-2, having lost close decisions in the Raising Arizona and Wild at Heart rounds.
Resident Evil: Extinction (why did i put myself through this)
this movie was awesome! its exactly how i imagine the apocalypse. a couple raggedy looking dudes and a nation of some kick ass hot sexy white chicks. great odds. i cant wait!

Did I miss a BEST film of 07 thread?

I watch alot of movies, and the worst things I somehow managed to watch in 07:
Spider-Man 3 (First time I ever felt like vomiting in a theater)
Ghost Rider (Shit monument, HORRIBLE)
Blood and Chocolate (MASSIVE Failure on so many levels)
The Hills Have Eyes 2 (garbage)
El Cantante (fuck this movie)
Saw IV (shitpile)
The Hitcher (pointless)
Perfect Stranger (yuck)
The Number 23 (hilariously bad)
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (sci-fi channel bad)
Norbit (BET bad)
War (So much FAIL)
Transformers (almost unwatchable after Turturro got pissed on)
Pirates of the Caribbean (zzzzzzzzzz + waiting 10 years to sleep with keira knightly, just kill me now)
Wicker Man (CAGE wins again)
Alpha Dog (couldn't finish this)
Across the Universe (A movie based on shitty beatles covers)
Resident Evil: Extinction (why did i put myself through this)
Wild Hogs (THE WORST SHIT EVER)
- spidey
^^^^ 5 YARD PENALTY: SOULSTRUT NON-COMPLIANCE; DOES NOT CELEBRATE JT'S ENTIRE CATALOGUE ^^^^^
I haven't even seen this movie and I know it's a straight CLASSIQUE.

What a turd, really. It amazes me that Cage has a career in acting, he's so bad that it's embarrassing.
Worst actor ever award. Congratulations Nicolas, why people continue to hire you I will never know.
