I was curious what people do here for a living? I know there are a wide variety of ages on the board and obviously we are all into records. Just curious what people do and how well off they are or how their living this expensive ass "Crate Diggin' Lifestyle" !!! I DJ and that is it nothing else. I'm lucky and thankful that is what I do because I pretty much wanted to do this, but at the same time I always want MORE income, I think most do no matter what they earn. I own a condo, a suv, etc. all from Music/Deejaying. The thing is I'm getting older and it's not as FUN as it used to be it's actually work and how long can one really do this for? I personally feel I should be further along in life yet at the same time are better off then a lot of people. Maybe I just know a lot of bums?! Anyways, let me hear your stories.......................

    1. DJ
    2. Record slangin'
    3. When I'm in town (Edinburgh, Scotland) I work in a bar/cafe to keep myself in check

The DJing thing is getting old, traveling is all good and that but it takes its toll. Since June I've been to Spain, UK, US, France, Thailand, Moscow, etc. and about to go to Germany and Netherlands... all over... just makes me tired, jetlags a bitch, getting packed, unpacked ain't a joke. I honestly think it's the most taxing job I've ever had on physical health.

The records is just a side hobby these days cuz I don't do the eBay thing and the cafe shit just puts myself in place in society kinda and regulates me so I don't get lazy in the down time...

    peace.

    i'm an urban planner.

i don't really DJ as much as i always wanted to be, but i guess i never chose to go for the DJ life, nowadays staying at home and listen to records or do a mix Cd is about enough to keep me happy.

i'm still working my way up to be established so i'm still trying save my earnings, trying to keep the spending money on records to the minimum.

I used to work constructions, in restaurant kitchens and in silk-screening (T-Shirts) until I discovered that I could actually make money with doing what I love.

Starting in 1995, I've been DJ-ing and promoting my own parties for a living for 10 years (1 year in Berlin, 4 years in NYC and another 5 years in Berlin). I retired in 2005 and moved to Africa with my wife who found a job at the German Embassy in Guinea. I travel and buy records, nothing else. I finance my travels through the arrangement I made with my friend who took over my funk party in Berlin from me.

I think by the summer of next year I will have found just about all the African records that I need. Now I'm at the crossroads of deciding if I'll go to NY and start a Afrobeat party in 2008 or perhaps move to Central America to buy more records.

Or maybe it's about time to do something entirely different with my life?

  • 1)I like my job at a major electronics retailer, good benefits, and payed quite well. It's generally the people I work for that make my job suck, the people I work with even it out...they are actually cool.

2)I've been a wedding DJ for the past 8 years, also parties and dances and anything else that comes my way since 94. I really enjoy it and make excellent money on the side.

3)I work for a catering company that pays me 15 an hour to bust my ass, I love the people I work for and with at this job....but not consistent enough to be full time.

4)I am a dad to a 11 month old, who is so amazing on so many levels. My wife and son are the reason for my non-stop working lifestyle...plus I get bored if I'm not doing labor.

5)I spend a lot a money on music, but my wife is a damn good bartender and really makes a lot of money for not a lot of time worked....very jealous of this fact. We live a very comfy lifestyle and have not too much debt, and lot's of cool stuff to show for all our hard work....life seems pretty damn good. Peace

  • I am VP of Communications at a Law Firm support company. I started here three years ago answering phones. I am obviously happy at the rate which I have ascended, but at the same time its not the type of job I want to be in for the rest of my life. I get board pretty easily, this job is good because I get new projects all the time, but eventually I will need something more personally fulfilling. I would like to go back to school and get my masters, but I have no idea what I want to study and my mind changes daily.

Interesting Kenny said he does Urban Planning, because that is one program I have thought a lot about. How do you like it?

I do diet graphic design, which is just as boring as it sounds. At the moment I am currently working on trying to get into a more focused, serious and financed company.

  • In order of income stream:

    1. Graphic designer for print & web, both as a dayjob & freelance
    2. DJ weddings & other for-hire events
    3. DJ club nights
    4. Occasionally sell records at record shows, but planning to sell heavily on eBay in 2008.

Graphic Designer - primarily web design but also print. Werked freelance fer years in toronto and just got sick of barely scrappin by. So we bought a house here and pay less to own a house / car then we were payin in RENT in toronto. Got this sweet full time / salaried design gig werking as part of a 2 man design team. Me and the boss, chillin blastin metal records all day, usually crackin beers on fridays.

Production - my own music - as piddly as it is i do make money licencing tracks, puttign out 12"s on labels and such

Production - Recording - I renoed my basement and finally have a pretty decent studio settup. So now im moving into recording other peoples bands and shit. Will be recordign 3 bands in the next couple months.. puttin the money made right back into the studio settup.

DJ - doh..this was a great source of loot in toronto but ive played out here 1 time in the last year... this could get ramped up in the future if the right gig comes along.

  • 1. I'm a project Manager for an e-commerce company. We're small, but really fast paced. Since I started over 2 years ago, we've more than doubled in business, and added a few more online stores. We run penguinclothing.com, stylerocket.com, hauseofhoweclothing.com, wuwearshoes.com, and mercclothignstore.com among others. It's a great environment, no dress code, very cool people, and walking distance from my apt. We have a ping pong table in the office and that's our stress reliever. All in all a great place to work. The money could always be better, but I'm not going into work saying: "I don't want to be here". It's a great job.

    2. DJ at a few bars around my area and throw an all 45 party bimonthly.

I teach at Oakland Technical High School, 11th year I think. I teach 9th grade California Studies, which is a 2-hour block class of California Literature and California History, and one class of 12th grade Government/Economics.

  • I work in the production department of a daily newspaper on the page layout system (we actually download the ads for a given day from the business system and arrange the paper by section/press configuration).
I was - for about 10 years - IT/Help Desk, but was downsized out of that position about a year ago.
Not a good business to be in these days....

  • I work as a research assistant at a cancer hospital, mainly on community projects. The pay is pretty good, the benefits are even better. I don't really want to do this for the rest of my life, but its good for now, plus I support a family of four so I can't just pack up, leave, and try to figure things out.

    1. Father to 3 beautiful girls.

This is def the best and most stressful job I've ever had!

    2. Sr. Sound Designer/Audio Editor @ HBO Latin America

Easy gig w/ no supervision. As long the work gets done I do as I please.

    3. Freelance Recording Engineer

Haven't really done any work in over 4 months because everyone w/ an M-Box is an "engineer". Although no longer dealing w/ 'rap & rock stars" has been a welcome change of pace.
