strangley enough, the spelling is ashkenazi.

and depending on who you ask, there are three communities of Jews - sephardic (Spain, Portugal, Morocco), ashkenazi (Germany, Poland, Eastern Europe) and mizrahi (Middle Eastern).

And of course the Jewish diaspora was larger than that. We all know about Ethopian and Yeminite Jews, but Jews are all over Africa. There is a South African group of Jews. Anthroploigist had dismissed there claims of Jewish heritage. Geneticist have found that they have the same porportion of their population with the Cohen gene as other Jewish populations. There are also Far Eastern Jews.

Aren't there Sephardic Jews from Iran, as well?

I have a friend who's a Sephardic Jew from Iran, is all I'm sayin'. But I'm ignorant, so lemme know.

I do suffer from self-hate sometimes. My days working at the library were (shamefully) some of my most-cherished. But I loathe that about myself and make sure to lash out at and cast blame on those who are even mildly associated with libraries, the Dewey Decimal system, cardigans and book trolleys.

Mmmmm - I think they might be considered Mizrahi Jews...I'm not sure. I think it comes down to how people define themselves.

If I want to hook up with some hot Asian Nazi broads, I am fetishizing ethnic women or being a self hating Jew?

    Yo, this is deep...

  • If I jock yet jest yet jock nonetheless "yee" jock jest jester jock, so be it.

I suggest we let just jesters, less the jesting jocks, join to jot

digest points, yet what of the jousting jews, who neither joke nor jock,

but rather like father let messy suggestions like this one fester

to gestation, until they boil over, soiling the board with testy rejoinders,

until another jester, such as jinx, twists joints till the joneses

are gone and the juniors are stressing the proper points?

Okay, I leave for an hour and this thread has completely derailed...I was really more interested in reading about people's experiences on other message boards. I just started reading industry (pharma) message boards and was surprised to see people making comments directly to African American participants that they should be grateful for slavery because it makes them Americans, racism no longer exists, reparations should be paid out in McDonald's coupons, they only have their jobs because of affirmative action, etc. I didn't even see shit like this in my ESPN.com days.

For the most part, I think the folks on SoulStrut are a tolerant bunch, but the occasional ill or poorly written comment can have tremendous impact on how this place is perceived overall.

  • Tanya, read craigslist "Rant & Rave" section for most cities and
you will see some disgusting racism. Everyone's posting anonymously,
and it could just be an extreme minority of misguided suburban teenagers,
but we'll never know. Reading that is like if you were able to walk
down the street and hear the inner thoughts of everyone you pass, and
    it's fucking frightening.

That reminds me of a stand up comedy routine I once saw:

"I'm half Jewish, half Iranian. People don't know if they should hate me...

    or hate me."

I just took a peek in New York (sounds like a disgruntled retail employee to me):

Subject: to all blacks who think they have purchasing power

    Talk about a derailed thread.

What does Faux Rillz's Jetta & toupee collection have to do with racism?

None of the other message boards I frequent have much racism going on at all, and if the odd racist comment does crop up, it tends to get slapped the fuck down in a hurry. But that could also be a function of my own selection: If racist shit were tolerated or promoted on a board, I wouldn't stick around there.

However, the above doesn't include my dirty habit of occasionally lurking on far-right-wing blogs. But those are just some straight-up hateful people. It's not so much racism as it is that they can't stand anybody who isn't exactly like them, which tends to mean minorities, non-Christians, gays or even gay-friendly people, poor people, and anybody even a smidgen to the left of the site denizens get put in the doghouse. The cognitive dissonance can be amusing to view, but knowing that such attitudes are still promoted so ferverently can leave one wanting to take a hazmat shower.

this thread wasnt as good as i had hoped it to be...

tanya- you totally made it with the hope that people would wild out so you could sit back and laugh your ass off...

patrickmoist- yeah i agree and thats why ive only contributed a few hundred posts since last october. otherwise id have as many or more than shiggerific does cause we had about the same amount at that time.

soulmarc- nice going on the use of "niggle"...

danielrillz- please use the full term of adams name and not just the shortened form of it due to it not being as funny "guzzlecock"... thanks.

i didnt even know any jewish people, or even what a jewish person was, until i visited new york back in the 90s. and it wasnt until i moved to the richmond district here in san francisco that i actually realized that jewish people live out here. theres some families that have those curly sideburn things and dress in black with those hats out here. i dont know why but they dress their kids real bad... not chinese people bad but a bad that i cant even explain.

    anyway... thats it.

I think Soulstrut is definitely much better than it used to be in terms of the subtle racism. lookin' at different cultures as "the other" and making comments that come off as ignorant. Even if you're "down" with a certain culture, that doesn't mean your enthusiasm will translate into humor, especially on a goddamn msg. board. just be polite or people will take shit the wrong way.

who was that motherfucker that said something like "Just be nice to PEOPLE. i'm down with the human race!"??? or something like that.
that was the truth right there. peace.

sorry, i'm sick and i'm ranting....

as a brownie, one observation i have is that lots of people dont like to be called racist, but dont find themselves racist if they slag non-blacks. this perspective is not limited to online communities, its still pretty prevalent in the media...i'm sure y'all remember that radio show that did that disgusting song sheit with the tsunami victims as a "joke", i guess they thought it wasn't offensive. im really phucking glad people spoke up against that sheit. i think asian american's(the non brown type) still get so many bad stereotypes, i feel bad for them. people still feel other racial terms are not equivelant to the "n" word, when they should be. "cracker" included. peace

AlieNDN said something very true. You won't find American movies with dudes in blackface (Bamboozled aside), but you'll still find movies where it's totally acceptable to have "Habib The Liquor Store Clerk/Terrorist" or some really fucked-up Asian stereotypes. Seems like Asians (East and South) are kinda the last in line.

It's a good reminder that we have a long way to go, but for a host of reasons I don't think that it's a parallel comparison.
