...thing is, dudes at 10deep aren't trying to be sold at marshalls.

But they are sold at Macy's.

And I don't think anybody's "trying" to be sold at Marshall's--that's where schitt ends up when it gets remaindered.

alright, I was at work and busy as hell, then I was out all night... couldn't put a freakin thought together straight. now I have 4 shots of whiskey in me, and I'm sleep deprived, should be all better:

regardless of fuckin marshalls or how big an operation you're running (and I'll admit to a certain bit of cop out in that) it is essential that you look at the process that went into something, not just the product. regardless of whether or not you like how shit looks, a critic, or critically minded individual (which is what most of you are trying to be), has to ask what is behind (and surrounding) the product.

I won't try and say that 10deep is drastically changing the world, acting like saints, feeding the needy... is that what you do at work? I hope so. sadly you're not. you're sitting here picking on a new batch of designs by a creative bunch of young bloods doing their own damn thing. making their own product that's high quality and looks different and actually picks at the brain. I don't care about people who think it's ugly, I care about the fools who immediately write this off as exploitation. I care because potentially they might not be so close-minded in the future.

you know what.. i was gonna try and argue, and now i'm like to hell with it. you don't like it. fine. you think these cats are exploiting, fine. I'll be rocking my shit in south dakota at the sundance in august. what are you cats? all debate champs or some shit?

besides being disrespectful those designs are just fucking ugly. Who the fuck woul wear that schitt...

    oh wait.

i find that shirt and the fact that they are smoking very ironic.

your ignorance makes their pocket bigger, while they are basically paying jesse helms paycheck.

My wife, who is 100% Cahuilla, thinks it's exploitative.
I showed her the shirt with Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, etc. and the meaning you gave behind it and she says "but what about everything else?".

Don't know how much that matters though.

Although I think the design of these T-shirts is gastly, I think if the T-shirts help to reverse hundreds of years of atrocities done unto the Native American population, then I'm all for it. Somehow I doubt that's happening though.

Honestly, how I really feel about these sweatshirts is similar to how I felt the first time I saw a "Native American" casino except this time, I don't think any money is going into the pocket of the tribe. I could be wrong.

but i do, so let me this: shit is corny and you trying to defend this shit just makes you look worse. And you using the excuse of "my boys are some awesome dudes! with great skills" as a shield is just as lame. Also so what if the people critiquing don't "feed starving people". This is like the excuse when somebody gets their CD dissed in a review crying with a response "where's your album?!?!?!".

Usually 10 Deep has some cool t-shirts and whatnot but this whole "let's be shocking" just makes 'em like all the other soon to be extinct streetwear brands trying to be daring.

    Captain Planet:

What's your though on the Crooks and Castles t-shirt from earlier this year, the one with the African child with his hands cut-off?

    Please elaborate.

good morning all. damn, a quick google search turned up that Crooks & Castles tee, and that shit sickened me. I don't know, maybe I'm was way off. obviously I'm gonna get defensive when my boys are brought up. to me it still doesn't seem as shocking as the diamond kid, as exploitative as putting up some slavery images (maybe a harriet tubman tee would be a better comparison), or as racist as Indians logo... but I don't know, I'm willing to say that I'm at least re-thinking their usage of this stuff. To me, geronimo has always been a bit of a hero, and I'm used to seeing those feather & tomahawk (and howling wolf) images being worn by backwoods rednecks, so I felt like 10deep were kinda re-appropriating the imagery in a way that I would be happy to rock. but I am gonna sit on this one for a minute. still gonna go pick up my threads today though.

feel like I been punching myself in the face for the past 5 pages.

if you don't know, know you know, dufa. all those girls in the pics (and the guys in the pics too) be getting manhandled by the photographer, also the founder of the company, known as Dove.

    Huh. I had no idea.

Well, I buy all of my super-hip solid-color t-shirts at H&M for $5.99, so I know somebody out there in a free-trade zone in Bangladesh is getting exploited, but my job requires that I wear clothing, and I don't know how to make my own fabric and sew my own shirts.

Oh well. Back to making the world a better place.

I'm not going to bother reading this whole thread so excuse me if this point has been brought up already:

how is this different from rocking Malcolm X or Che Guevara t-shirts?

People need to chill and quit trying to find things to get pissed about. Moral indignity is the new trucker hat.

If you can actually put that on a trucker hat, I'll cop.

    partial

I think the garments are not very attractive, or for that matter, cool or hip to my eyes. Whether or not they are "exploitative" or "offensive" is down to you.

Personally I've seen some fairly lurid and offensive tshirts portraying dead african american legends in the past, that were definitely exploiting something..

legends like tupac shakur, notorious B.I.G., Jdilla...

  • & mr planet having been in the clothing game since the 80's your explanation of why those shits cost over 100$ is so far from truth dawg, you can get that shit produced for very cheap even in low runs w/o going outside the US ...

thank you for schooling me. I will now berate my boys and tell them to lower their prices so you can cop the latest.

just kiddin, what do you work on? does it exploit anyone? if not I want some. I wanna be that super-honky non-exploito dood. seriously.

Exploiting pot smokers and surfers? For shame, sir! Have you no sense of decency?

Yeh its the same thing. IMO it all goes back to who is producing the clothing with tehir message and what their purpose in doing so is. I am not saing anyone should get a pass for any of these types of shirts, but if its an organization that si some how tied to said ethnic gourp/leader etc. then its a whole different situation from a company whos goal is profits, fame, and being known producing it. Also add on who these are being marketed at (hipster-doofus' for the most part) and all meaning will get lost in the middle of their coke/drunk induced Kill whitey parties (heh).

CoSign everything Firme said regarding Dove and the production of clothing in general.

To get these all over prints created and sewn in the smallest quantity in the US (300 pieces) for a hoodie would cost less than $15 per hoodie. The higher the quantity the lower the price and I don't think they are doing less than 1000 pieces.

  • I take offense at uncle ben, aunt jemimah, the cream of wheat dude, the redskins and the indians (teams).not cause they are so bad on the surface (well, the indians logo is), but because I know what's beneath the surface.

WTF is wrong with the Cream of Wheat dude? I can understand aunt jemima and uncle ben, but shit... The cream of wheat dude is obviously a trained and qualified chef, judging from his hat. They didnt wear those fancy chef hats on the plantation...

I love cream of wheat and cream of rice... Plus that shit is from my home town of Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Oh, and on a related note... In Grand Forks, North Dakota, this is my schools logo:

The "Fighting Sioux" logo has been highly highly controversial... And I'm up in the air on it. While I always agreed with my white college professors who protested against it, when I'm in the local real world around Native Americans, they don't seem to have a problem with it...

    Peace...

He is, but his name is Dov Charney. Know how to spell your enemy's name.

Funny you say that because where I live (my hometown) there has been debates FOR YEARS over Chief Illiniwek.

Low and behold they got rid of the chief.

The Daily Show actually covered and you can see exactly all there is to do here.
