House music from '97 to '07: what's good?

Partly inspired by the Daft Punk thread...I've got the early house years pretty well covered, but my knowledge of dope house trax of the past ten years (with the exception of Baltimore stuff) is very spotty- a little Daft Punk here, a little Armand Van Helden there, some Felix Da Housecat...etc. Anyone care to shed some light on the best house records of the last ten years? Maybe some top ten lists?

    he certainly is house music

"U Don't Know Me," "Flowerz" and that one song w/ the puerto rican chick talking about how she wants to have sex w/ you = classics

couldn't listen to anything he's done recently though...turned into a 'dancerock artist'

While Armand ain't anything near the greatest. You can't deny he's got some pretty decent tracks.

Tho I think "U Don't Know Me" was the last track he ever did that I liked.

Armand Van Heldon was huge right around 1997-'98 with his "Professional Widow" Tori Armos remix that tore up the clubs, or in my case rave parties in Chicago as I was "too young to party" legally. I know he had a few more big remixes and helped spawn the bastard "speed garage" subgenre.

97-07 favorite house records (subject to change)
can't claim comprehensiveness, house has been something i've been exploring for about 3 years in between rap releases but consider it more of a personal list

    1. CZR - Chicago House Experience (1997)
    2. Basement Jaxx - Rooty (2001)
    3. Theo Parrish - Parrallel Dimension (2000)
    4. Moodymann - Black Mahogani (2004)
    5. Luomo - The Present Lover (2003)
    6. Michael Mayer - Immer (2002)
    7. Archigram - Crydamour Presents Waves II (2003)
    8. V/A - Get Physical 2nd Anniversary (2004)
    9. Mei Lwun Presents Uno Compilation, Vol. 1 (2004)
    10. Green Velvet - Green Velvet (2000)

that green velvet is technically a comp of stuff from earlier but since most of that shit was only avail. on 12" before i figure what the hell

my list, btw, is both mixes and 'artist albums'

some more - the rest of the Basement Jaxx albums and the two Atlantic Jaxx compilations, Derrick Carter's "About Now," Roy Davis Jr "Traxx from the Nile", Deep Dish's "Yoshiesque," Armand Van Helden's "2 Future 4 U," various releases on Kompakt (total 3&4 esp), Luomo's debut, Herbert's "Around the House" & "Bodily Functions," Superpitcher's "Today," kind of veering in and out of techno here tho.

honestly one of the best things to do if yr into trad-style house is go to http://www.deephousepage.com/ and check out some of the mixes...

A few of my faves which probably fall into these years:

    1. Blaze, Productions
    2. Isolee, Rest (not really "house" per say but who cares)
    3. Derrick Carter, Squaredancing in a Round House
    4. Greens Keepers, the Ziggy Franken Show
    5. Anything by Theo Parish, Moodyman, Norma Jean Bell, etc.

The Cleptomaniacs version of All I Do is pretty wicked.

Theo and Moody are def on the top of what kind of house music I like. However, Armand Van Helden and Daft Punk, do not[/b] fall under house music. There are so many sub genres, that it is hard to name a bunch of producers.

Ill have to go brew a cup of coffee and look through my records before I come back and name em.

I believe Carl Craig's "More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art" makes the cut, though maybe thats techno and not house per se.

    Televised Green Smoke

    one of my favorites ever

Yeah, I'm kind of feeling the Green Velvet stuff I've heard. Sometimes the lyrics could be a little bit more minimal and/or less self-consciously "inspirational", but the beats are pretty hard to hate on.

I'm not an expert on house, but I like Cassius

The only Cassius track I know is "La Mouche", which hints at better things, but doesn't knock me out or anything. Are there any tracks in particular to seek out?

Cosign. That album is so nice. I have Science Fiction on my iPod right now, but I don't like it quite as much.

  • House music sucks. It's not even music. It's the Techno of people that don't do drugs.

This picture reminds me of Schnipper, he knows a thing or two about house records, so does Cosmo Baker, they should report to this thread.

As for the most recent ish, this is what I got. This is usually what I will play on the weekends. To each their own.

Anything on the Dirtybird label...well almost anything. Some of it can get to be too rave-like for me.
Especially Claude Von Stroke is the best bet.

FreeRange records are always nice as well. It can go from deep to funky.

-Chris Grant - Slow Your Roll (Odds and Ends)

-The Martin Brothers - Stoopit (Christian Martin Remix) (Dirtybird)

-Santiago & Bushido - What's Your Name EP (Robsoul)

    -Inland Knights-Come With Me (Drop)

    -Bioground- Outstanding Emptiness (Plastic City)

    -Subjekt-Stepback (Freerenge)

-Kerri Chandler- Back to the Raw (Deeply Rooted House)

-Del Costa and Pedro Goya- Fuck Yo! (Music For Freaks)

    -Bionic Bump Band- Chiggle (Dotbleep)

    -Jesse Rose- A-Sided (Dubsided)
