Serato is a great tool for the working DJ. Most people that I hear who hate on it aren't professional, travelling dj's and wouldn't know what to do with records, turntables & a mixer anyway.

i do just fine and know my way around my equipment. i'm no superstar traveling dj and that's perfectly fine with me. i would rather make beats at the house anyway. as i got more exposure in my town i would also always keep in mind not to acquire an inflated ego as most "working" dj's have cuz i seen it ruin good dj's. Folks need to realize that what you say can go a long way....
i seen some of the most reputable dj's in my town go from dope, to being the most hated and lose fanbase because they didn't know how to show folks proper respect.

what does that have to do with serato? nothing...

some of you dj's need to come back down to earth though and check yourselves.
    respect goes a long way.

Serato's not a replacement for skills and knowlege of music. Like dudes said you still need to know how to program a set. I don't think it's gonna damage the diggin culture. Im never gonna stop buying records its in my blood.
But as far as new club shit is concerned give me that mp3. I don't wanna waste my money and space with a whole bunch of records that have a life span of a couple of weeks. I respect the amount of knowledge that all the cats on this board drop about music. But the sad fact is that when your in the club 90% of the people there don't give a shit about whether or not you know where the drums or loop from a track you are playing comes from.
At the end of the day i think a wack dj is still a wack dj with or without serato.

that's too bad, and that's my main beef with serato. it's helping to kill the art of digging. say what you will....

The art of digging? Let me show you the art of digging:

There's been little art to digging for ten years. Today, digging is just hard work and hustle. Guys like soufriere who do a masterful job of making a living out of digging work and hustle harder than you can imagine. If you don't know at least 2/3 of the records they know it's because you haven't spent enough time wanking over blackvinyljunky's record porn and popsike. The remaining third are the records you'll never know but can buy from them. Anyway, some of the most serious diggers I know get their best scores without leaving their computer chairs.

This subject is over. There is nothing left to debate.

As for microwaves, if you think they're evil then cosmo's right: stick to your player piano and stop whining.

    my favorite things about it:

1- having tracks when they are brand new
2-playing my own schitt out at gigs, even rocking doubles of it...scratching drops cats gave me, etc.
3-having the same songs in more than one "crate"
    4-relative mode

So far I've always a bag of records too, but having the added versatility is super exciting.

This pretty much sums up where I'm at right now with this shit, relative mode is just crushing anything else, making live party breaks looping shit, being able to cut without the record skipping...pshhhh...game over indeed.

The cake delivery lady at the wedding last night looked at my setup and said "You play records? I've been delivering cakes to weddings for five years and you're the first DJ I've seen play records. All my best music is on records."

    Which I thought was cool.

But now I just realized I could have been playing Serato and she probably would have said the same thing.

    my 2 cents:

i love to dig, find breaks and raeritys. i love serato, mashing shit on saturday afternoon, then playing it on saturday night.

BUT thing is, not everyone can afford the 2-3g's it takes to own the basic equipment to run serato. obviously homie tapes is on some bedroom, non-working dj grind. cut the boy some slack.

So why does he denounce the technology wholesale on some vinyl fundamentalist "DJ Taliban" shit? I'm probably on a similar grind, although I DJ for fun nowadays, and no longer entertain any ambitions to make a living from it. Nevertheless, if I did, and I was getting enough work to justify switching to Serato, best believe I'd make that move like Shalamar. From everything that's ever been said about it by the cats on here that use it, it sounds as if it could only encourage good DJs to be more creative. I'd also point out to hommie that Jazzy Jeff - one of the greatest DJs I've ever heard - uses Serato now, so go tell him he's not true to the game.

Well, thank you. On a mutual appreciation tip, I enjoy your "Love Break" and "Martial Law" mix CDs.

I'm only playing and editing my disco tunes on a reel to reel. The whole 12" vinyl thing is such bullshit. It was bad enough when DJs started using acetates.

"i dont know any WORKING djs who don't own serato."

I think I'm the final and last man standing here. I don't use or own serato. I have four gigs in Cali this week and have to take vinyl with me. I did consider getting serato today before I leave on weds. My man said get it but don't use it in cali cause he said I would need to get used to it and figure it out first. I know I have a LOT of songs to load into it too. At any rate I'm getting it as soon as I get back. All the djs laugh at me when I show up to the club old school kid capri style with the 6 ATA record cases.

  • 'Preme, are you bringing out the raers???

    I'm too shook.

do it homie. there are a bunch of working djs out here who don't use it but me and mike 2600 are changing that game a little. i was hesitant to get serato for some bullshit moral issues that i quickly got over when i heard dude at the guitar center battle announce that they were knocking $100 off the price for the day! i'd rather spend 5 minutes packing up my laptop than spending an hour trying to find some records i didn't play last time i was out. do it. do it.

  • PonyPony 2,283 Posts
I would get Serato in a heartbeat if I had a laptop or money or enough gigs to justify it. I have NO hate towards it at all, some guys just like to keep it TOO real and will be left in the dust as a result. It just makes me sad when I hear DJs using Serato and their sets don't sound any better/different then before. Just the ability to play your own music/edits/beats/remixes is a dope enough feature for every DJ to want this thing.
