Yeah, I didn't include that simply because I'd already listed the Chris Bell song... Strange reasoning!

I wanna say "Big Star - Night Time" because it's my
favorite...but it's not really perfect, more like
    sloppily endearing.

Wow. I was talking about this thread with my friend on the way home today and he said Teenage Kicks too.

Completely agree. The live version from the seventies with Alex Chilton solo slays me.

  • This is making me wish somebody would start a best-of Power Pop thread.

Funky Drummer- James Brown, the long version of the Jungle Groove album...

perfect title, perfect gangsterfunk, dopeass vocals and that break has to be the most perfectest break...right (?)

or is that a track and not a song...?

not just a perfect song, but the first song that really stopped me in my tracks. i was 18, a little bit out of control, and listening almost exclusively to hardcore and angry rap, and it didn't hit me on any sort of born-again shit...it just came across as something so beautiful and otherworldly...the harmonizing and the honesty and conviction with which it was delivered. on a side note i was so high the first time i heard it that i tough they were referring to some girl named "cinnamon" instead of "sinner man" but that somehow made the song even more haunting and beautiful. but i can still hear it like the first time i heard it. so bitter but at the same time so sweet. the last 20 seconds where the music fades out but the vocals keep going is my shit

    the wailers - sinner man

The Supremes - you cant hurry love

Bass and tambourine intro... snare and horns on the offbeat, could possibly be the finest production ever.
