Can the non-football-headz please post opinions about other things in other threads? Or on their blogs? Or even a football forum, where you will be ignored.

Jeez. There's a million other morality plays to discuss in this world, but no, you got to post on the internet about a The Right Thing To Do. Yes, that was mainly aimed at ODub!

I'm a little confused. So, Zidane's actions were for the "good of the game"?

I mean, I might be a non-football-head(z) but I watch enough sports in general to have a general impression of what is .

By the way, I blame Yuichi for this rise in card pulling.

I've always wondered if it would be acceptable to have an African-American player nicknamed "Black Vanilla"??

I think there is a fair amount of racism in baseball.

Violence is a great way to teach a society lessons.

One of those statements is sarcasm....I'll let y'all guess which one.

What about his human rights? Zidane's legacy will not suffer from this, if anything he will be lionised and there will be more talk about racism, much like the Cantona affair

Italy haven't done their image any favors. Yet again.

PS: that "gold ball" is the "world" because the whole world competes, not just a city in Canada.

I think Zidane immediately dropping the dude to the ground for racist remarks is a far better statement and more important than winning the game.

    have you been drinking?
I'm just saying, before the "Headbutt Heard 'Round the World" Zidane wasn't a role model for billions of people fed up with racist bullschitt.

This was a terrible look by the second best French player of the last decade, but it spurred an anti-racism campaign.

Thanks to Zidane, I can now tell my children to solve their problems with violence.

    And who headbutts people nowadays?

Hey you have to be a bit mad to play for ManUre...

"In football, I wore my collar up like that to hide the traces of the heavy burden I was carrying! No, I'm kidding: I was never the one saying that. But it's like the idea of tattoos for this photo - I liked it because I thought it was very powerful."

Dude, Fifa's whole shtick for this world cup was stamping out racism. Zidane just used his head, instead of his foot...

    exactly...sup Bapt...holla.

And Odub...you should stop WRITING son...you've been writing all the time man. You need to put down the pen, or in this case, put down the laptop. Im really worrying about your health right here...and maybe your future reviews in magazines. They will be affected sooner or later by all the shit you're reading and hearing and writing here and there.
Why the fuck you talk about football and zidane and so on when your experience is SO limited. Bow down and shut up for once...you'll learn more by stepping out the ring sometimes. You'll get wiser actually. Right now you wanna show off too much. Your opinions are not so "good looking" and your knowledges in various fields does not entitled you to speak about any damn thing in this World. With that say, good luck with your writings bro'...

I'm sure there's trash talking that goes on nonstop, but clearly this crossed a line or two. Good for Zidane for having some balls.

whatever dudes, this is all dennis rodman 101. big game, set out to get in the star player's head, do some uncouth shit, he loses his focus, you win. i'm sure he said some fucked up shit but as the leader and legend that zidane is (truly a breathtaking player) he really needs to be above that kind of thing. i mean jordan never ever ever would have responded that way. fuckin believe he'd respond (and probably never forget it either), but once he loses his cool like that .... he's the loser in that situation.

I cosign this 100%. This is gamesmanship, and it goes on in every sport. We would all blush with the shit that is said on an athletic field- the point is not to insult your opponent, but to get in there head and make them do something stupid, get caught, and get a penalty/ejection. It is to your advantage.

I'm not saying its right, and it is a 100% wrong way to go about a sport, and I have no respect for it. BUT, it is a tactic that has been used since the gladiators, and a veteran with Zidane's level of experience should have known better, seen that there were 10 minutes to go, and walked away.

And, I think that Jordan would have chosen to have humiliated his opponent with his play, and left him crying in his jockstrap. That's what Jackie Robinson did.

that's what Jackie Robinson did because in those days he was already pushing the envelope and if he knocked someone out for calling him the n-word he would've been killed.

edit: and i think it's ridiculous to expect people to react to racism the same way people did in the 40s. It was still reprehensible back then but largely socially acceptable. In 2006 it isn't acceptable on any level, and I don't think anyone has the responsibility to "roll with the punches" as it were. Obviously Zidane violated the rules of the game, and I didn't see him arguing with the ref or throwing his hands up in bewilderment, he accepted the consequences for his actions. I think it's unfortunate that cooler heads didn't prevail, but I can also definitely understand and appreciate that everyone's got a breaking point.

Was there any post-game interview or AP article about what was said to Zidane before the head butt?

"Richard Brown at the New Republic's Goal Post suspects racism: "Rumor has it that Materazzi called Zidane's father a 'harki' - the Arabic term for Algerians who fought for France against Algeria during the occupation. It's beyond all insults, the ultimate traitor."

Professional athletes are just as human as the rest of us. Put yourself in his shoes. If someone said something close to that, would you just let it slide and keep playing the game? Looking back, I'm sure he regrets having to take such action in his final game, but what's done is done. And I bet his fans like him even more for standing up for himself. 2cents from a non-soccer head.

  • AaronAaron 977 Posts
What's so bizarre about the whole situation was the way the two were smiling and patting each other prior to the alleged comment. It almost makes me think that Materazzi was joking, but nevertheless said something that shouldn't have been said as a joke. The guy is a self-proclaimed ignoramus, anyhow.

I guess we'll find out at the end of the week. Until then, it'd probably be wise to give the guy a break until we hear what actually happened. Accusing someone of being a racist isn't something to throw around lightly.

Not that I want anymore focus to be brought back to Rooney. But, could footballerz watch this video and pay particular attention to the last 20 seconds most of all.

Does anyone else believe that they are not friends? I mean... They both look like they hate eachother to me.

Also - The wink kills me... It's like a sign to somebody that their plan worked.

I agree that people shouldn't react to racism in the same way they did in the 40s. And, I know the history and even glossed over that J. RObinson shit (his first two years, he didn't retaliate; after that it was ON. But, I broad-brushed for internet message board talk.)

But, I think that an athelete, especially a veteran, should recognize when he is being baited. Dude wanted to get a rise out of Zidane and gain an advantage for his team. And he did it, and his team won. Like I said, I'm not saying it is right. But, it is a tactic as old as sports themselves, and Zidane should have known better.
