I would still like to know who you think you're arguing with. And I don't want to hear the names of that slim minority like Dizzybull that only likes Good Beats and Competent Lyricism.

Hey there, Ponce De Leon, You should try actually reading my posts some time. They're pretty good.

I would issue a challenge to you to find examples of me hating rap music, but we both know that would be a waste of time.

It would be a waste of time.

I agree that most of your posts are pretty good--just not the ones where you try to talk about rap.

From here on out, Soulstrut should implement a few rules:

If you're not a rap fan/expert, don't talk about rap.
If you're not a reggae fan/expert, don't talk about reggae.
If you're not a moder soul fan/expert, don't talk about moder soul.
If you're not a northern soul fan/expert, don't talk about northern soul.
If you're not a latin fan/expert, don't talk about latin.
    And so on.

I think this could really encourage the quality, not to mention the openness, of discussion here.

    Please respond with your thoughts,
but only if you're a music journalism fan/expert.

On a serious note though...Noz, that was a great interview. All disagreements aside, I'm pleased to see you actually connecting with artists nowadays rather than just relying on your own retro-oriented take on things.

You forgot, if you are not a basketball player, don't talk about basketball.

    See NBA playoff thread.

You've been sounding kind of ass-hurt lately, Marco. Might want to have that looked at.

I wonder what the Black folks on this board think about the debate...

i'm still waiting for answers to the original question ....

the question was very legit ....the responses have been either defensive, irrelevant, dismissive and even pompous

    ...it figures though

You aren't going to get an answer.

Personally, I don't care what people rap about as long as the music is good and the lyrics are above a 3rd grade level. I mean, I guess Scarface could be considered gangster rap, but Scarface has real talent, so he could rap about gardening carrots and I would listen. And the music is good too.

On the other hand, there are so many rappers on here that get championed that can barely put a verse together and they are rapping over shitty no-talent beats. But hey- they're talking about selling crack so it must be good.

If a quality standard exists for fans of said music then I don't know what it is. I am mildly curious, but I think the only standard is that the 'hood' is feelin' it, and isn't based on a personal like or dislike of the music.

That is the impression that I get on this board from the vocal maj(min?)ority. Perhaps I am wrong, and there is some standard that separates a good 2 note synth line from a bad one. A good 32nd note hi-hat from a bad one.

I'm going to keep trusting my ears on deciding what is good and what isn't. If that was the sole basis on how music was judged I wonder how opinions would change (if at all).

And my shirt was Salmon, not Pink. Later on this week I'll try and burn an MP3 of that 45 from the show and PM it to you.

Do iconoclast white dudes fantasize about badazz black dudes sparking a violent revolution that would benefit all with their minds right?

    Yep.

Do masochist white dudes take pleasure in the reality of a crack epidemic handcuffing the black community?

    Yep.

Are both of these instances racist, albeit to varying degrees?

    Yep.

Are these these only reasons why white dudes fixate on black gangsta rap?

    Yep to be decided.

probably the most enjoyable angry post I've seen from young Archie.

What I love about this is I know there are a few strutters that have posted in threads surrounding this but seem to have the same reaction to this thread that a dog has to a vacuum cleaner.

like I said before self-analysis of this sort just isn't possible for some.
