  • St. John Green - Freaky Psych

“St. John Green” is by turns frightening, dark, funny and stupid as it reeks of bad trip freak outs in matte black painted rooms with no furniture lit only by a single red bulb and burning cigarette ends. What emanates forth immediately from this darkness are the mystic incantations of vocalist/bassist Ed Bissot who is mean, moody, magnificent AND for his sins is stuck in a garage of sick creep psychedelia for all eternity. His delivery is so full of promises and not threats you begin to feel that this guy exists precariously balanced over a yawning chasm between Jim Morrison and Arthur Brown without trying at all really MEANS IT. And he is shored up all the way by a fine-tuned band in total sync with his visions of the four D’s --death, doom, damnation and dread -- in a weirdly accomplished album that runs a gamut of styles from supernatural ruminations to the cheapest of goofball novelties.

  • Gaston - My Queen LP

This little gem is the first lp from this obscure creative and trully cosmic black combo pretilly called "Gaston", this band was based in the Atlanta area, their sound is unsual, they are definitely influenced by the P-funk, but maybe more by the Mizell Brothers sound, they use a large selection of Mizell's favorite instruments like the arp string ensemble, the moog synth, the flute, the Q Tron electro Harmonix bass effect but also the latin percussions, fuzz guitar... The lead and background vocals are just irresistibles, sometimes deep, sometimes freak, always in the right tune...

One of my favorite track is the killer "Clap song", a long and hypnotic instrumental disco jam session, a real dancefloor winner!!! But this lp is consistant from start to finish, if you like atypic music, it's for you!!

Oh, i have to speak about the sound quality too, it's just incredible for a little independent release, the bass and the beat are fat, the trebbles and mediums are clear, the mix is not over compressed, a top production for an excellent band!!!

  • Cullen Knight - "Looking Up" - Private Jazz Funk

For those that know, this is an amazing jazz album, with latin and african flourishes. The album is all original tunes from Cullen Knight, and Leon Mitchell. Personnel on the album is: Cullen Knight, trumpet/fluegel horn; Kenny Barron, Electric Piano; Monnette Sudler, guitar; Charles Fanbrough, Bass; Bobby Durham, Drums/Latin Percussion; Bootsie Barns, tenor; Fred Joiner, Trombone; Jimmy Batton, Electric Piano; Gerald Smith, Guitar; Kenny Davis, Electric Bass; Newman Baker, drums; Ed Watkins, Latin percussions; Leon Mitchell, Composer

Aside from the ground breaking cover art (for 1978) the music is beautifully produced and a great addition to any jazz collection.

    Track Listing:

    Side I:

    Once You Get It (7:38)
Once You Fall In Love (7:21)
    A'Keem (Brothers) (5:30)

    Side II:

    Lookin Up (8:34)
    Pshalom (5:05)
    Here Comes Billy (4:50)
