  • Soul Strut 25. This is the End.

Thank you for everything. To paraphrase Sly's "Sing A Simple Song", we've all shared life's ups and downs. We had our laughs, had our disagreements, made friendships and shared knowledge. It sounds corny, but this place also helped me grow as a person. With every record show, concert, DJ night or whatever meetup where people here have come through, I became more social and outgoing. Much appreciation.

  • Recent Finds

A majority of these are Christmas gifts. The first three Brazilian records are reissues, of course. I'm fortunate to have friends who are on my same wavelength. "Alan Parsons Project" is their "debut" (/Dr. Evil). Hummingbird is Bernard Purdie with Jeff Beck's crew. Rare Bird has one of the best Morricone versions I have heard. I saw Andrea Centazzo play with his trio at a local universalist church last week. It was real solid of him to sell me his last copy and to throw in some of his "best of" sampler CDs from his Ictus label. He even signed an bio insert on an Italian jazz comp I found in the dollar bin a few years back. Also pictured is Bayete's auto, who I also met recently.

  • Claus Ogerman

I saw the "Elis & Tom" doc yesterday, which I recommend. There were some simmering tensions between César Mariano (Elis' husband) and Tom. At one point Jobim lost his cool (?!?) and demanded that Claus be brought in the studio!

I was listening to this last week and it is beautiful:

My mum used to work in Liverpool and watch the lunctime set in the original Cavern.  The canteen area was shared benches and tables and she sat with them often, and Cilla.  No egos.  She used to get in for free for the evening sets because she said the bouncer fancied her.
Wow! Off-topic and not as interesting, but it reminds me of my mother and aunt, as teenagers, who housesat for Lou Rawls and his wife. I think the connection came about from my grandmother, a British self-employed seamstress who sometimes had celebrity clientele. Anyhow, a lot of folks passed by at these pool parties the three were invited to. Aretha Franklin, Godfrey Cambridge and Percy Faith are names that were mentioned to me. No egos either. My mother is as honest as the sky is blue and has a good memory, so I believe her. I wish we had photos, but not being able to find them certainly isn't a lack of effort on our part.
