  • Soul Strut 25. This is the End.

Thanks for everything, Raj. All good things must come to an end. This place has a special place in my heart.

  • Japan digging 2024

I usually hit the Disk Unions the most, specifically the Shimokitazawa, Shibuya and Shinjuku branches. You can also get lucky in the ones that are a little less visited, like Kichijoji, Ikebukuro or Kita-Urawa but they sometimes are not worth the trek.

It so depends on what you are after though, and at what price point. Universounds is always great, as well as East Record in Jinbocho. Coconuts Disk in Ikebukuro and Ekoda can be good for a quick dig although I haven't been lucky the last few times I went. When in doubt, put レコード into Google Maps.

  • Soil & "PIMP" Sessions "Lost In Tokyo"

Maybe some of you have been following Soil & "PIMP" Sessions, a "death jazz" band from Japan that was lauded by Gilles Peterson and toured Europe and the US a bit over a decade ago. Their new album is absolutely incredible so I wanted to share with the Strut.

It's out on CD in Japan but I'm hoping there'll be vinyl down the line.

  • Rep Your Whiskey (Whiskey R)

Nikka's Taketsuru is my jam, or used to before it became impossible to get (geographical reasons including). I heard they changed the formula but this was always the go-to solid Japanese whiskey that never disappointed.

Repping something local, there is an Icelandic whiskey called Flóki. No idea whether it tastes good or not.
