  • what r u listen'n 2

I had a DJ gig a few weeks ago at the Japanese ambassador's residence for the Iceland-Japan Society so I dug out my city pop jamz which I hadn't listened to in a while.

A lot of the city pop records are super hit-and-miss but I found that this ("Misslim" by Yumi Arai, later Yumi Matsutoya) is a really solid listen throughout. Love her vocal style and laid back vibe. It's a bit too early for the city pop label perhaps, more folk mixed with funk.

I bought this LP ages ago for "Funkanova", played it out a few times and stowed it away. Cut to two months ago when I moved house and set up a nicer setup to listen to records and started pulling out LPs I hadn't listened to in ages. And when I put it on I was floored. This record is all killer, no filler.

    Current favorite track:

This album ("Tonk of the Lawn") was a huge cult classic in Iceland in the early 2000s. A (mostly) visual artist made it, put it it out on CD and from it this was a minor radio hit. I listened to it a lot back then but slowly forgot about it. He went on to become a really successful visual artist, showing at the Venice Biennale etc.

Cut to a week ago when I went to the modern art museum here in Reykjavik and an LP version was in the gift shop for sale. No record shops carried it, you could only buy it from an art museum's gift shop. Super excited, I picked up a copy, while thinking putting it in an art museums gift shop was the perfect way to reissue an album you thought had been overlooked.

Anyway, the whole thing is on Spotify with an obscenely low play count. Check it.

  • Did I break a record store code of conduct?

You'd been building up the suspense for so long. Dash to the counter as soon as you enter, ask to use the bathroom, and then spend ages not buying anything.

Bought from him quite a few times, always solid. Also, the funkyou auctions hipped me to quite a few records I wouldn't have known, just from browsing the full auction based off a single item I wanted. RIP.
