so i made it to the usa for the first time, visting new york for 12 days. i'm staying with friends in brooklyn and i've already put the search option to use, hit brooklyn flea market last saturday and will visit good records tomorrow. i would be grateful for more current tips if there are any. good concerts this week (hip hop, soul, funk, whatever), any flea markets other then the brooklyn flea market (and no, i'm not looking to buy the entire blue note catalogue for a 1$ a piece:)) but would love to see a flea market that is less dealer dominated?

btw: did anyone ever check out that 100.000 records collection i saw a photocopied leafletter near rockaway beach for yesterday?

Good Records, Big City, and Academy are all very easy walks from one another. You should go to all three in one go.

  • Go to The Colony in Manhattan ... ask for Michael. He's been buying records since the 50's .//
He will let you in the basement. He has a locked room down there ...
thousands of records ... strong african section, strong latin section.
some wierdo 50's space shit. tons of psych, funk, rock and soul...
I pulled some crazy korean psych and turkish stuff out of there ...

I saw a copy of liza liza down there, should still be there.
and tons of other stuff too.
    Elias Rahbani
    Liza Liza ( EMI , Greece , 1978 )

if your into that ... his prices are reasonable. Haggle ...
    good guy.

tell him that kid from Chicago sent you.

  • also, if you walk down 7th & 8th between 30th and 20th there are guys on the sidewalk selling vinyl..
I picked up vg ++ copies of jeremy steig - legwork for $4 and cal tjader prophet for $6
and this was about 3 weeks ago.

    who knows what I missed?

i just got home and new york was incredible. i checked out all the stores recommended and got to say that i enjoyed coming to record stores that felt "alive". in germany visiting a record store is a depressing thing most of the time. below some of the 70+ records i bought.

othen then the stores recommended i bought some nice things at the brookly flea market in ford green and carrying home the records i bought there also made me meet the old lady that let me buy from her collection where most of the records below come from.

thanks again for all of your recommondations!

  • If you're around NYC October 28 - 30, don't forget the WFMU Record Fair. If you're not around there, GET THERE. Good scores all over the place. If you've been there you know I'm serious.
