VOEH is on hold for now, but the Moments record is also a double - up for grabs. Minty copy of that Zingara, that one is up for trade, too. I you need 'em, whisper at me.

House call yesterday. Had to leave behind trashed copies of Juju, Lyman Woodward and Camille Yarborough.
Did find some LP's in great shape including:

    Mother Night - S/T (Columbia)
Bobby Hutcherson - Now (Blue Note)
    Toudie Heath - Kawaida (Obe)
General Johnson - Generally Speaking (Invictus)
Don Covay and the Goodtimers - Mercy! (Atlantic)
Electric Prunes - Release of an Oath (Reprise)
Joel Vance - What I Did on My Vacation (Cadet Concept)
Jon Lucien - Mind's Eye (RCA)
and finally a long time white whale spearded NM for $5:

don't have my camera on me

but went digging again. dollar bin pick ups, didn't get much because i was rather conservative on the condition of some of the records.

gary burton - the new quartet (ecm, 1973)
coke escovedo - comin at ya (great condition, surprising since most other stuff was smashed)
    the mastersounds - fate/gesticulate 45 (world pacific, ???)
synergy - electronic concepts for rock orchestra (what can i say, i love synth-cheese)

    some other stuff.

Surprised to find two amazing Ester Marrow live tracks on that MLK tribute rec (Gr??nsl??s Kv??ll). I've passed up on this several times before, stupid me. And I finally got my hands on the discomental paranoiajazz of Vanessa . Now I can throw out my old cassette tape.

It's pretty decent, better than I expected. It's got some simon & garfunkel style vocal harmony/interplay on it (loose analogy)... I think they pull it off better.
It's not hoaky at all like I was expecting.
Sound is put together well on it and has a very believable, mellow end result. It's got a folkish, dare I say 'soft-psychish' thing going on. I could see some folks that collect this genre trippin out on it. Sounds better the longer I listen to it.

Took a road trip up the coast to this spot we hit once in a while - I always get kinda bummed out there, it's like, they have good records, but somehow like 90 percent of their stock is like "VG" at best, yet they charge full price, and I always end up buying beat up copies of good records for more than they are really worth...anyway, enough bitching, I did get some great joints.

This one was minty! Whassup with the Dr. John/Jesse Hill/etc connection on this album:

    also:
Africa - Music from Lil' Brown - Ode
Underground Sunshine - Let There Be Light - Intrepid
Irakere - II - Columbia [/b](this shit rules!)
Eddie Floyd - Down to Earth - Stax [/b](sealed)
King Curtis - King Size Soul - Atco
Carla Thomas - Memphis Queen - Stax
Ike & Tina Turner - Ike & Tina Show Volume 2 - Loma
Willie Bobo - Feelin' So Good - Verve
Four Tops - Meeting of the Minds - ABC [/b](never really see this one, and it's nice)
Elvin Jones - Time Capsule - Vanguard
    Messengers - S/T - Rare Earth
    Doug E. Fresh - Nuthin/All the Way to Heaven 12" - Reality
    [/b]

Also, from a local spot earlier in the day,
I got an amazing OG in the shrinkwrap of
James Brown - The Payback - Polydor
[/b]and this record, which was actually the cheapest of the day
(except for the DEF 12"), but may very well be the best:

hows the cake lp?. looks hot. stein. . .

It's weird...it has all these New Orleans heads playing on it, Dr. John, Jesse Hill, all tracks arranged by Harold Battiste, but it's definitely more of a Phil Spectorish girl group sound than anything...lots of covers like "What'd I Say" & "Mockingbird," etc...the "Ooo Pah Poo Doo" cover rules...Morrocco Mole tells me the other LP by them ("slice of CAKE") is more raw folksy/funky, but this one is a pretty cool little record...I just want to know the story of why they were working with all those ill NOLA dudes...

Both of The Cake's records are really nice. Another kinda similar lp to check for is The Feminine Complex.

  • I've been busy this week, buying up all different kinds of records. Today I bought about 50 disco/electro/italo 12"s for $1 each. These are some of the best, to my ears.

I was on the fence with this one until that piano lick kicked in. Classy disco joint.

The Feminine Complex is one of my favorites. I found this Cake record too last weekend. I skipped through all the Phil Spector-like stuff and was happy to hear the three cute tracks on the end of side-B with the string quartet sound. As these records are being discussed: I found The Poppy Family - which way you going billy. What a record...

-- everyone sweats similar girly California pop psych raers but so often sleep on this record which is as good as Guryan, Priddy, etc. I think their second album, Poppy Seeds, is even better. Anyone checked out / have opinions on the solo Susan Jacks LPs?
