I see what you're saying. I dunno, I like danceable stuff, and War, other than Galaxy, which is really good, didn't make danceable stuff. Perhaps that colors my opinions about these bands.
I I just like a few mandrill tracks better for my own reasons.
MandrillMandrill: (Polydor 1970) * "Peace and Love (Movement II)" Meat Beat Manifesto - "Drop" * "Peace and Love (Movement IV)" Kanye West ft Mos Def, Freeway, and The Harlem Boy's Choir - "2 Words" * "Peace and Love (Movement V)" Meat Beat Manifesto - "MindStream"
Is: (Polydor 1972) * "Lord of the Golden Baboon" Black Eyed Peas ft Esthero - "Weekends" EPMD - "Rampage" * "The Universal Rhythm" Beck - "Hotwax"
Just Outside of Town: (Polydor 1973) * "Mango Meat" Abstract Tribe Unique - "The Scandal: Then & Now" Jungle Brothers - "Straight out the Jungle" Mic Geronimo ft DMX, Fatal, Cormega & Ja - "The Usual Suspects" Ministere Amer - "RCA" * "Two Sisters of Mystery" Public Enemy - "By the Time I Get to Arizona" Renegade Soundwave - "Blue Eyed Boy" * "Fat City Strut" Avalanches - "Radio" Eric B and Rakim - "Beats for the Listeners" Jaz - "Jaz O" Schoolly D - "Am I Black Enough for You?" * "Love Song" Nas - "U Gotta Love It"
Composite Truth: (Polydor 1973) * "Don't Mess with People" Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. - "Don't Mess" DITC - "Get Yours" Yo-Yo - "Dope Femininity" * "Fencewalk" Cypress Hill - "The Funky Cypress Hill Shit" De la Soul ft Da Beatminerz - "The Hustle" Ice Cube - "Jimmy Hatz Commercial" Public Enemy - "Bedlam 13:13" Schoolly D - "King of New York" Ultramagnetic MCs - "Stop Jockin Me" * "Out With The Boys" Arsonists - "Underground Vandal"
I haven't listened to, let alone found, any Mandrill other than "Fence Walk". War, like what was said above, suffered from Lee Oskar's wanky harmonica solos (I don't like the harmonica. Personal preference.) and pop culture / classic radio station overexposure, but they had very catchy songs with excellent arrangement. To name one of a few, "World Is A Ghetto" is one of the best and cheapest albums you could buy. Unlike other bands, their output stayed solid even through their later years.
I'mma tip my cap to Mandrill because War does too much harmonica work on their tracks.
This is a mitigating factor - WAR gets cornball at times
Actually, I think Lee Oskar's harmonica is part of why War is so unique. I think his playing is pretty soulful and he and Charles Miller compliment each other well.
Tell 'em. Even better, Oskar knew exactly how to use it, playing in unison with Miller's sax, rather than against it. He wasn't about to fuck up a groove with some simplistic Bob Dylan harmonica lines; he had as much to say as Papa Dee Allen's congas.

Hey,
I gotta say War all day!!!! I had both group's LPs in childhood, and no doubt, War was a big part of my lifetime soundtrack. So many classic joints:
-"Don't Let No One Get You Down". -"Southern Part of Texas" -"Cisco Kid". -"All Day Music". -"Slippin' into Darkness". -"Me and Baby Brother". -"Summer" (lovely harmony). -"Four Cornered Room". -"Mazatlan" (sheer beauty). -"Lotus Blossom" (beautiful). -"Galaxy" (the 12" is that shit). -"Deliver the Word". -"Low Rider".
...and so many more. Mandrill is great too, but War's music is much more moving and invokes good feelings and nostalgia.

I'm not a huge WAR fan, but they've got several decent albums and some of their hits are pretty awesome. It's really scary that some of you are actually sitting around listening the fucking Mandrill albums and shit. Yikes!
A.Who the fuck asked you?
B.you are such a know it all...... asshole
now run back to your safe haven at spermidermy before mommy or "VERONICA" gets worried about you and your micropenis...... douchetard

Hahah, I just saw this.
And it reminded you of what a fucking retard Kala is?
Okay, now War has the cover story in the newest Wax Poetics.
Interesting that the guy being interviewed (Lonnie Jordan? can't remember), says that the band was fighting with their record company, United Artists, so bad, that they went and signed two other funk bands just to keep them humble.
Those bands were young upstarts Brass Construction...and their old East Coast "rivals" Mandrill.

Can't believe I never got on this thread the first time around. Funny thing is, I did "War vs. Mandrill?" as a status update on Facebook a while back, and War swept the board. Like Jonny was saying further back in the thread, I like Mandrill, but they weren't seeing War. Along with K&TG; and EW&F, War made a real impression on me when I was a teenager. I used to love hearing their shit on the radio (and they got quite a bit of radio in the UK, even before the big pop crossover joints), and I always looked forward to new shit by them. I can't remember a time when I didn't like them.
Both are great bands with essential Lps but War win by a nose

My War and Mandrill collections are pretty complete - theyre both great bands and i love jamming their records - but as a dj i find myself reaching for mandrill more often than war - so my vote would go to Mandrill - by a small margin
Not to say there arent War records that work for me as a dj

Too many great songs and definitely one of the MOST important bands to ever come out of Los Angeles.
