I haven't listened to, let alone found, any Mandrill other than "Fence Walk". War, like what was said above, suffered from Lee Oskar's wanky harmonica solos (I don't like the harmonica. Personal preference.) and pop culture / classic radio station overexposure, but they had very catchy songs with excellent arrangement. To name one of a few, "World Is A Ghetto" is one of the best and cheapest albums you could buy. Unlike other bands, their output stayed solid even through their later years.
I'mma tip my cap to Mandrill because War does too much harmonica work on their tracks.
This is a mitigating factor - WAR gets cornball at times
Actually, I think Lee Oskar's harmonica is part of why War is so unique. I think his playing is pretty soulful and he and Charles Miller compliment each other well.
Tell 'em. Even better, Oskar knew exactly how to use it, playing in unison with Miller's sax, rather than against it. He wasn't about to fuck up a groove with some simplistic Bob Dylan harmonica lines; he had as much to say as Papa Dee Allen's congas.

I gotta say War all day!!!! I had both group's LPs in childhood, and no doubt, War was a big part of my lifetime soundtrack. So many classic joints:
-"Don't Let No One Get You Down". -"Southern Part of Texas" -"Cisco Kid". -"All Day Music". -"Slippin' into Darkness". -"Me and Baby Brother". -"Summer" (lovely harmony). -"Four Cornered Room". -"Mazatlan" (sheer beauty). -"Lotus Blossom" (beautiful). -"Galaxy" (the 12" is that shit). -"Deliver the Word". -"Low Rider".
...and so many more. Mandrill is great too, but War's music is much more moving and invokes good feelings and nostalgia.

Interesting that the guy being interviewed (Lonnie Jordan? can't remember), says that the band was fighting with their record company, United Artists, so bad, that they went and signed two other funk bands just to keep them humble.
Those bands were young upstarts Brass Construction...and their old East Coast "rivals" Mandrill.

Can't believe I never got on this thread the first time around. Funny thing is, I did "War vs. Mandrill?" as a status update on Facebook a while back, and War swept the board. Like Jonny was saying further back in the thread, I like Mandrill, but they weren't seeing War. Along with K&TG; and EW&F, War made a real impression on me when I was a teenager. I used to love hearing their shit on the radio (and they got quite a bit of radio in the UK, even before the big pop crossover joints), and I always looked forward to new shit by them. I can't remember a time when I didn't like them.
Both are great bands with essential Lps but War win by a nose
. To the young diggers rather than going straight for the rares with your trust fund money. Get yourself War and Mandrill lps. Easy to find and essential
My War and Mandrill collections are pretty complete - theyre both great bands and i love jamming their records - but as a dj i find myself reaching for mandrill more often than war - so my vote would go to Mandrill - by a small margin
