I actually liked the last show on HBO -- people don't seem to rideth though.
The new one, I've laughed audibly twice:
1) when he breaks down the insult about the "old used dicks" to his friend at the poker game
2) when he does the stand-up bit about masturbation in actuality being a primal need revolving around pro-creation. All the ad-libbing he does around that is amazing.
Otherwise, there's just something awkward about the show. It's got a lot of Seinfeld / Curb overtones -- the Seinfeld ones coming from the NY setting and the fact that all the shows start out with and revolve around his stand-up routines, and the Curb part having to do with how he's recently divorced and getting back into dating after a long marriage, etc.
Show doesn't flow very well, but there are some very funny parts. And I was glad to see Pamela Adlon hop in.
Ricky Gervais show (related because he plays louie's doctor) is funny. The Karl Pilkington's Diary segments make me LOL.
i like gervais but can't get into his cartoon. the format of louie is tough and there are certain bits i found to be completely unfunny - including the bus-driver sketch and the poker scene...but his standup routines kill and half of the bits (so far) have made me laugh.
it's arguably the best show on tv right now because there is nothing else to watch. true blood? entourage? hung? zzzz

That's really low hanging fruit. You're not actually saying it's "good". You're saying, "it's not as bad as the other crap out there." Not really much of an endorsement.

I noticed in the credits Louie does all the editing himself which i don't think helps. The pilot was definitely uncomfortable and hard to watch. It's gotten better each episode and i'm starting to enjoy it. It's not even in the ballpark of his old show. It's good for what's on.
I don't have a tv, so I can't say whether it's the best thing on right now, but I just saw Ep1 of this season and i thought it was incredible. As good as anything in season 1. I just like how he addresses topics that are socially taboo - he's like Prince in that way (just to make it RR). He covered american socialism, parenthood and gay marriage by my count.
I think the cartoon format of "Karl Pilkington is Hilarious" works better than the live action version. I laughed a lot.
Show is incredible. I don't think there's a comic out there who holds a candle to C.K. His ability to blend over-the-top edginess with intelligent, insightful comments is without equal. He can make you think, laugh 'til you hurt and tear up from sentimentality.

He's no Dane Cook, that's for sure.
The show is brilliant, and a real window into his talents as a filmmaker (which is where he started). I can't fucking stand Dane Cook and was wondering (especially after listening to his interview on Marc Maron's WTF) if his appearance on 'Louie' was some attempt at ingratiating himself with the people who think he's a hack.
He really does seem that needy, despite his Tony Robbins-esque facade.
I'll also add that being a father makes Louie's stuff that much more enjoyable. I'm not saying that you have to be a parent to appreciate him, but it does add another layer.

The episode where he and the girls were pretty much just driving to Pennsylvania was genius.
I haven't watched much television lately, except for movies on TCM, but I do like Louie! on FX. At first it was hard for me to get into the flow of the show because there were laugh till you hurt moments followed by "was I supposed to laugh at that" moments. But I've taken a great liking to the show. I don't know whether it's the best show on television right now, but I know that if you like his stand-up then you might like his show.
I'll absolutely cosign on the genius of Season 2. To its credit, Season 1 got better as it went along but Louis CK has hit some new level of incredible-ness with this current season. The Dane Cook ep was great, the Pamela ep was fantastic, and even the weirder ones - like with the anti-masturbation activist - are still pretty brilliant in their own way.
Also Louis CK is arguably the most successful stand up comedian in the US right now and last week he did 4 somewhat secret shows at our tiny Punchline comedy club. That's pretty awesome
This show reminds me of Curb Your Enthusiasm for loners. I love him. At times, his stand up reminds me of Bill Hicks.
It's a lot like Curb in that it can get very uncomfortable. For the record, Curb is also one of my favorite shows.
We watched American: The Bill Hicks Story Sunday night and said the same thing. Louie's not as in your face with his politics, but he definitely works in his point of view on American society.
I can't believe I missed this thread until now. I've been a huge fan of this show since the first episode. I think its a phenomenal comedy show. The scene from this season of the violinist in the subway with the homeless guy showering himself in the background had me in stitches. It's an original show, and to compare to any of his shows in the past is ridiculous. It seems like this is the first time he's gotten to do exactly what he wants to do on TV. It's a fucking hilarious show. I would say its the best comedy on TV right now.
It's good to see an intelligent comedian with a really dark offensive sense of humor given creative liaison on TV. I've never been a fan of Seinfeld or Curb your Enthusiasm, but I gotta give credit to them and also Matt & Trey of South Park and Always Sunny in Philadelphia for pushing censorship and our conceptions of what a SITCOM can be to allow a show like Louie to be on FX.
Just like Otis Funkmeyer pointed out some of the show is supposed to be poignant and make us think about ourselves in a different way. I'd say Louis CK has become one of the comedians that blur the lines of what can even be considered a joke. Just like all of my favorites Carlin, Pryor, Lenny etc.. I especially love when they try to pull off absurd surreal dream sequences to delve into the mind of what inspires his comedy.
It's going to be interesting to see how this show progresses.

Will be seeing him at the Beacon Theatre on Nov 10.

the best white blaxploitation film evar:
Although, I'm grateful that there haven't been any male genetalia shots in this series.

"Louie Louie you're gonna cry
Louie Louie you're gonna die"
I can't get with this show tho.
the whole "mopey" thing, while endearing, is boring as far as comedy goes.
pls be srs.
not a Smiths fan, I take it?
