underground hip-hop "classics" from this decade

Just wondering what the underground/backpack rap bangers exist from 2000 to present. I pretty much stopped following a lot of the underground rap & skratch DJ stuff, and was leaning towards the more commercial stuff at the turn of the century. I don't know if it was a general wave of the underground scene, but I got bored with it. Plus, it was a bunch of d00dz. I know about certain MCs and groups by just staying aware, but can't say I ride for much. So just wondering if I missed out on anything, and would appreciate any recommendations on good listens. And plaese no or THANKS!

Are you talking about non-major label stuff or "backpack" stuff? There's a wide difference.

  • mf doom

  • The Blu and Exile Lp, Below the Heavens is real quality. Dope beats and rhymes.

  • The RJD2 cuts like "Rain" and "Here's What's Left".....People Under The Stairs rocked the spot...pretty dismal time period really unless you are on the Stones Throw hype-wagon!

    Classic.

    Absolutely classic.

Qwel is ridiculous -- one of the most slept on dudes of all time.

    No question.

    Ridiculous.

    also:

For some reason, I was all over Jedi Mind Tricks - Violent By Design when it dropped, but I just re-listened to it for the first time in something like 3-4 years and I seriously don't know what the F*ck I was thinking.

Ghetto Pop Life was getting love on the Strut. Love the beats, feel so-so about the lyrics.

I think it's too early to determine whether some of these are classics or not but from what I remember, from the small amount of rap I listen to, these are the ones that stood out. The only one out of all of these I truly consider a classic is Fantastic vol.2, the rest have yet to be proven. IMO the vocal side of Jaylib is what doesn't really make it a classic and The Unseen is more of a conceptual album, good to listen to but not of "Classic" status.b, 21b, 21b, 21b, 21b, 21b, 21b, 21b, 21b, 21b, 21The following was nice and refreshing given the time at which it came out but is pretty far from earning the status.b, 21b, 21

Classic meaning will stand the test of time or classic meaning dudes like batmon will know it?

I will ride for Atmosphere and Typical Cats

  • nothing ever is a classic

  • not sure about "classic" but i liked

    semi-official - the anti-album
    necro - prefix for death
cage - movies for the blind
eastern conferece all stars - vol 1&2
tame one - when rappers attack

    madvillain is super overrated

This is classic. The rest I leave to you folks.

There's some good beats on the LPs mentioned on here; I love some of the Cold Vein, but it's a bit of a challenging listen, while the vocals to Jaylib/Madvillain/Lord Quas aren't doing enough for me that I don't wish they'd left half of the tracks as intrumentals.

I should listen to the Exile & Blu as a few heads on hear have recommended it.

    Slum Village is class.

Beauty & The Beat + Ghetto Pop Life should have had more singles with remixes and instrumentals imo, double pressing[/b] at the very least in the instance of the Edan.

Frankly I want more stuff like

    Day's Nas remix

    Peanut Butter Wolf's Shadrach remix

Atmosphere & Typical Cats will be remembered in 20 years?

  • Atmosphere will be, the latter not so much

I think you should check out the Sean Price stuff. One of my favorite MCs in the game right now.

Underground music generally gets re-discovered not holding on for the ride.

  • Atmosphere will be, the latter not so much.

Which Atmosphere Album is the Classic?
