All this stuff, whether implied or stated outright, about how Jay's lyric isn't complex enough, or deep enough, or profound enough, is Straight. Up. Bullshit.
This is exactly like the calypsos, or the griots, or the talking blues. It's talking about what's going on right now in a way in which its intended audience (and beyond) will be able to connect with and relate to. It is what rap music is all about. How the F*ck are people missing this?
As for getting hung up on the materialistic aspect, well, that's just some wood-for-the trees shit. This is Jay, remember - this is what he does. Moreover, for the most part, this is what rap does.
