Kool and the Gang & the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame

Why haven't they been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? They been around since 1969, they've enjoyed much commercial success throughout the 70's and 80's,they've been eligible for the Hall of Fame since 1994 and they've had more of an influence on the hip-hop and Pop culture than 2009 Hall of Fame nominee's "Chic" will ever be(In my opinion of course). So what's the deal?

    Its doesnt in terms of a song by itself, BUT the fact that the Chic Song is the one that was important in bringing Hip Hop to the mainstream via Rappers' Deliight, i think holds way more weight than accumalting a list of how many times K&TG got used by producers.

    And on the R&R Hall of fame thing - I wouldnt say they "embody" rock n roll they way u can squeeze a Miles Davis in there for his Fusion or Grandmaster Flash for the street thang.

    What elements of Kool&TG contain ROCK?

    Every great group is Rock N Roll to me...but thats another discussion.

Not to mention, albums like Lightnin' Rod's "Hustler's Convention" and song's like "N.T." played a very key role in hip-hop's early stages during the days of Bam, Herc, & Flash. If Earth, Wind, & Fire can get in and they started roughly around the same time Kool and the gang did (if not a year or 2 later)then Kool and the gang should have been inducted the same time Earth, Wind, and, Fire, got in in 2000. It's sort of like how Black Sabbath should have been inducted the year Zepplin got in in '95 but didn't get in until 2005. Long overdue.

    Still, if your gonna use Hip Hop as measuring stick on why a 'Non-Rock" band should be inducted in the R&R hall of fame then a song like Good Times/Rapper's Delight still holds more weight than Hustler's Convention's background music.

    Chic was/is arguably the greatest Disco Band. Plus Nile Rogers(guitarist/leader) is/was a respected musician despite the hatt that Disco received.

    The Isley Bros(R&R/Jimi) and Earth Wind &Fire(played Rock arenas/Al McKay Solos are closer to the percecived Rock style IMO.

    OG Kool & The Gang = Too Black/Funky

    Funkadelic/Parliment = White Enuff

    But overall they should get in, even though the whole process is so damned flawed that for one to really argue why/who/coulda/woulda/shoulda is like takin a shower w/ a raincoat.

    You mentioned it right there, OG Kool & the Gang were too black/funky. They later commercialized their sound and had a string of hits throughout the 70's and early 80's (Just like EW&F did). If anything, Kool and the Gang's commercial success lasted longer than EW&F's. Kool and the Gang's last pop hits came in '86 with "Victory" & "Stone Love" and EW&F's commercial success lasted up until 1981 with "Let's Groove". But you do make a very valid point about using hip-hop's influence as a measuring stick when it comes to getting into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. It may play a part but that's just it.... "only a part". What I looked at the most was the fact that they'd been putting out albums and had commercial hits before Chic even got on the scene. Hell it wouldn't surprise me if Kool & the gang had an influence on Chic at one point.

    Chic were popular with hipper rock critics in a way that Kool & The Gang never were, plus the Chic guys actually came from more of a rock background than many of their peers. How much any of that has to do with why Chic are getting inducted into the R&RHoF is anyone's guess, but I expect it might have something to do with it. Personally, I think both bands are great (particularly Chic), and neither need an R&RHoF nomination to confer any kind of legitimacy upon them as far as I'm concerned. If you're one of those rockist types who still hasn't come to terms with "disco", you might feel differently.

    Well if having some sort of rock background in your music qualifies you for the Rock Hall of fame, how did Curtis Mayfield get in twice as a solo artist and group member of The Impressions? And don't get me wrong, I actually like disco. I guess for me, it all just falls down to seeing people who've been around longer and have put their work in getting their just due (which is long overdue in some cases).

    Listen to his debut album, Curtis, to hear what his guitar sounded like through a bunch of effects boxes. Plus, he was being booked into a lot of historic rock venues at one point - his Curtis/Live! was recorded at the Bitter End, the legendary folk/rock club in NYC.

    And what you said about the hipper rock critics digging Chic goes double for Curtis. Even if the typical 16-year-old Deep Purple fan didn't quite Get It with Curtis' solo elpees, most rock magazines of the early seventies gave the man his props, especially around the time of Superfly.

    "Pop" and "rock" are not the same thing.

    See my Pat Boone example for further clarification.

    Besides, I can't speak for Caucasiods or Negroids or what have you, but going by pure musical worth, I'd say the typical fan of Curtis Mayfield's guitar playing would probably prefer Kool & the Gang's earlier discs ("Let The Music Take Your Mind," "Funky Stuff") over the smoothed-out later recordings ("Ladies' Night," "Celebrate"). But that's just my own bias talking, sorry!

    I just knew that when the Hall of Fame got to the seventies that no two people would agree on who should be there. Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, the Rolling Stones, hell, even James Brown - prime Hall of Fame material that nobody argues with. But once you pass 1970, that's when the shit started fragmenting - "hey, why is Elton John in there and Kraftwerk isn't!?!" (And I'm not a fan of either performer, I was just giving a fictional example of what somebody might be saying...)

    I usually try to stay out of these "does-rap-or-disco-or-modern-soul-belong-in-the-HOF" arguments, but Luscious Fox is telling you right. Only Kool & the Gang's pre-1976 records compares artistically with classic Curtis Mayfield. "Joanna" and "Celebration" are just weak pop music.

    Having pop "cross-over hits" is what got The Dave Clark 5 inducted into the Rock Hall of fame last year didn't it?

    Cross-over w/in Rock and Pop is different than Marvin Gaye "crossin over".

    The DC5 didn't have to "cross over" because they were already there.

    Crossing over for the Dave Clark Five would mean that the country stations or the black stations were playing them (which didn't happen). And this isn't the country or R&B Hall of Fame we talkin' 'bout here, so...

    No, but I can defend Too Hot, Celebration, Fresh & Get Down On it. It may not be from the same Kool & the Gang period that created Electric Frog, Duji, and Soul Vibrations (my favorite period from them) but they are songs I do remember listening to growing up as kid before I even heard Give it up, Funky Man, or Kool it (here comes the fuzz).

    "King Tut" by Steve Martin was a pop hit. I don't see anybody petitioning to get him in the Hall...
