depends how nit-picky/purist one is, but if you don't consider New Age Steppers to be a reggae group - they did a lot of reggae songs in their own wacky way.

The Clash - Wrong Em Boyo

    - Brownsville Station - "Let Your Yeah Be Yeah"
    - Canned Heat - "The Harder They Come"
    - Chambers Brothers - "Stop The Train"
    - Now Generation - "Israelites" (this was a bunch of Nashville studio musicians who cranked out lame cover versions of late sixties hits)

  • The Clash - "Police and Thieves"

I heard an acoustic version of "Uptown top ranking" just yesterday, but didn't like it enough to download and forgot the blog that I heard it on.

when axl goes "gimme some reggae" during the breakdown of g'n'r live "knocking on heavens door," and they chikka brank--brank inna shufflestyle for a few bars.

    strangest thing ever.

although he came with those poetic justice braids later on, so maybe it was there all along and I just missed it...

  • Rolling Stones - "Cherry Oh Baby"

Not a band, but Amy Winehouse did The Maytals' "Monkey Man" on her recent live DVD. This is a different performance:

  • Gilberto Gil - "No Woman, No Cry"

In a related note. Supposedly, the Stones' 'Start Me Up' was a reggae tune for the first 38 takes until they tried they version they released. Anyone ever heard reggae start me up?

    edit: found this.

Well, the song itself originated with the O'Jays, so we can't really say it's a "reggae" tune as such.

or the Slits doing "Man Next Door"... i know there are more punk ones, i just can't think of em...

there are tons and tons of drum n bass and dubstep remixes of classic reggae, but i don't think that's what yr looking for...
