at my house, they jump up on the turntables and mixer, but they trot around the platter and never touch the record that's playing. but they like to strech their claws on the spines of the records on my shelf. my roommate's lps are shredded!

Watch your cover corners and spines. I knew one due who's cat just shreaded his record spines. He had them all nice on a bottom shelf and the cat just used it as a scratching post while he was a work. If I leave records out my cat will rub and chew on the corners so I have to watch that.

Bad story, one time I left the cover off my comic book box and when I walked in the room my cat was just going to town. Had some $20+ stuff in their too. So not a major loss, but still made me nuts. But hey I was the human who didn't remeber to cover my stuff.

FInal crazy story, I think all my loud rap music has made my cat deaf. Cuz she often sleeps behind the speakers. I'll be blasting stuff for an hour and then she just casually comes out from a nap like it didn't even bother her.

    YES

When I first got my cat, she had this habit of climbing upon the records on my floor (I have them laid out upright, as if in boxes, in long rows), and shredding her claws across the tops...I didn't notice this habit until too late, as in, one night I was sitting there watching hockey, drinking a beer, and looked over to see my cat just scratching away at the tops of my beloved records!! HOLY SHIT! I spit beer everywhere, and went ballistic...I'm not one of those who can hurt small animals, even in discipline, but I was able to scream and frighten her enough that - eventually - she stopped doing this...for a while I had to lay things across the top to keep her off, so I would have all these books and clothes spread all over my records...and I do have a decent amount of LP's with damaged top spines to remind me of her very insensitive behavior...

"Don't kill me, master! I promise to only shred your Leo Sayer LP's from now on!"

PS The best thing to train cats with is a squirt gun/spray bottle. If you catch them give them a squirt and they'll get over it quick. Obviously you have to catch them in the act or they won't make the connection, but once they realize an action gets them soaked they stop. (At least when your around).

daaaamn, i got a 19 year old cat who has never had any interest in the moldy records i bring into the house. this cat spits up everywhere and has even had some vandalistic shitting episodes, but she has never fucked with my albums, god bless her little soul.

my cat loves to sit on mpc2000. I'll come home and he's sequenced something. One time he actually almost made a beat. cat beats....

  • Spooky The Subliminal Cat has only actually touched a record on my shelves once in the past 5 years. I had just yelled at him for being too close to a stack and he strutted over to my shelves, popped out his claws, and pulled one LP halfway of the shelf by its plastic sleeve, not harming the record. I think he was letting me know just what he was capable of, like a warning or something.

He does like to put his paw on the side if the record player platter (not on the album though) and slow my shit down when I'm listening to things. Again, I think he's just fucking with me.

Other than that, he's pretty cool about the vinyl.

    Deep beats and deep crates,

It's important that you make the cat understand that it is not supposed to touch the records. Most people don't believe it, but you can educate cats too. They're not like dogs, but they understand. Our cat never begs for food or jumps on the tables. She know that I'd get angry. No slapping, just some mean and loud yelling. Try it! Cats are smart.

damn, your cat needs to get in the game! seriously though, that actually has some flavor to it. someone needs to rhyme on top of it, or at least put somebody else's vocals on it.

I was thinking of making a project called monkey beats after this happened.
I would set up the program with sounds, then have a monkey bang out the sequences. Good idea?? Think NYU will let me use one of their monkeys for a coupla hours?

man... cats. Once I left a sheet sitting on my crate, and when i came in the next day i realised my cat had pissed on it, and the piss had dripped down into my crate! Thats when i thanked god for the wonder of plastic sleeves. Sleeves ib the bin - records were shaken, but safe.

As for the decks - my budgie (who loves music) once landed on the tonearm of my 1200 while it was playing. he sent it skidding of the vinyl and got a serious shock. he hasn't tried that shit since!

i bought some that i think had dog piss on it, but it might have been cat piss. either way the whole crate was soaked and smelled nasty. but i dont have a cat, my dog would eat it. and he doesnt fuck with my records, just gets his hair all over them.

i wish he made beats like sunfortune's cat tho!

I put one of my turtles on my turntable once (45 +8). I think he got really dizzy cause he went in his shell for like a hour. Needless to say, I felt really bad and haven't done it again.

  • 303. "Communists should set an example in being practical as well as far-sighted. For only by being practical can they fulfill the appointed tasks, such as scratching record spines, and only far-sightedness can prevent them from losing their bearings in the march forward (with the scratching and the pawing of the records)."

    987. "The socialist system will eventually replace the capitalist system; this is an objective law independent of man's will. However much the reactionaries try to hold back the wheel of history, sooner or later revolution will take place and the records shall be pawed and scratched on."

DOODE! I have been dealing with this with my little kitty. She used to do the spine shredding thang, but it was on the open end (cause I store my records so I can pull them out quickly) so it wasnt too bad. But after (literally) throwing her out of my studio and yelling a bunch at her she only scratches on the actual milk crate itself, not touching the records at all ("Good girl! Thank you!")

But the big pet peeve is her climbing behind my setup and playing with/chewing on wires and cables. One time she stepped on the cord to my lamp and it came crashing down on my table while it was playing a record - DOH!

I remember Dibbs talking about this in an interview about 5 or 6 years ago, saying "Cats love to fuck with your records" at the time I was like "whaa?" But now I know, and

My cats like to investigate whenever the closet door where my 45 boxes are stored is open. More like they immediately converge on it. And if I drag a box out and throw on some tunes, the girl (there's a boy and a girl) has to do one of the following:

try to fit in any open space that may exist in the 45 box

walk across the 45s on the floor

try to jump up on the turntable to see what I'm messing about with

The funniest episode was when I was spinning a 45 and, before I could stop her, she jumped up and put a front paw on the record, perfectly stopping it. I picked her up and the record continued along...
