Hello all!b,121b, 21I'm doing a major project revolving around a hypothetical record-label. I study graphic design and will most likely be doing everything from business-cards to promotional stuff, to actual packaging as part of a rebranding of... True Norwegian Black Metal.b, 21b, 21The genre is irrelevant, this is design-focused and aims to strip away the clich??es, and I'm well on my way to some interesting results (plus I wanted to challenge myself by choosing a genre I don't really like).b, 21b, 21Right now I'm looking into alternative/strange forms of packaging. So, what I'm asking for is pictures of unique pieces of record-packaging, along the lines ofb, 21b, 21Quintessence - In Blissful Company, the Island OG with the crazy booklet.b, 21Hawkind - Space ritual, the version that spreads out like 8 times into a massive psychedelic carpet.b, 21b, 21That Wailers record made to be like a zippo, the Steppenwolf record you open up to find that their having a birthday party in a wasteland etc etc etc.b, 21b, 21Any help would be massively appreciated, and if the project turns out nice I'll post pictures of the finished thing!b, 21b, 21Thanksb,121b, 21 - J

img src="http://www.spirit-of-metal.com/les goupes/M/Motorhead/No Remorse/No Remorse.jpg"1 b,121b, 21You can't see from the pic, but this Motorhead album has a leather sleeve. The inner lining feels like pvc, and the leather is low grade but not yet smelling too bad. I keep it housed in 5mil pvc sleeves and well away from vegans.b, 21Perhaps Norweigan death metal would work well in a human skin version.b, 21Not that I would advocate such a move.

I know of another Motorhead one with a leather sleeve, but it had kind of "baseball" stitching around the edges IIRC. No writing, just the embossed "Face". Around the same time as "No Sleep Until Hammersmith"? It was owned by a mate at school who had some kind of Motorhead privs; he had a Marshall stack with "FAST EDDIE" stencilled on it (once the property of said Mr. Clarke).b, 21b, 21On a similar note, I heard that the new order cabs all had "GAY SPERM" stencilled on them, which kind of reduced their appeal to theives.b, 21b, 21Which neatley segues into New Order - Blue Monday 12" (the one made with no markings to look like a floppy disc and was the most expensively-packaged 12 of all time (and the biggest selling?))

font class="post"1b,121b, 21It was their biggest-selling single, and they actually LOST money on it due to the packaging.b,121b, 21Peter Saville did many interesting things working for Factory, including that folk-record with the sandpaper-cover. It was designed to destroy the other records around it, but ended up warping the record inside more than hurt others around it. DOH!b,121b, 21b, 21Great suggestions, but more pics please!

font class="post"1b,121b, 21sorry, didn't find a pic, but a local rap crew here released their new cd in a wooden box with the writing burned into it. looks pretty good but smells like new ikea furniture img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /1

the first ever TISM single was a seven inch record in a 12 inch sleeve that was sealed on all 4 sides. Saw it once about 15 years ago and didn't buy it. Never seen one since.b,121b, 21b, 21edit: It was the Defecate on My Face single, there's a picture here/a1

Can't find a picutre, but Storm and Stress' second album (Under Thunder and FLourescent Lights) is packaged in a clear plastic sleeve (fairly thick), and it has the name of the album, and track list printed in either white or black in a very unassuming font, on the sleeve. b, 21b, 21A few Traffic albums had those odd shaped covers that made them look like 3-d cubes.

the Mt. eerie album, "Drums from No Flashlight" had some incredible packaging. Phil took old record sleeves, split two of the seams, folded them over so that they were inside out but still bound on one seam, silk screened his image on the cover which used to be the blank inside of the sleeve, and then put his record inside of that.

Limelight had these gorgeous, design-forward gatefolds - Milt Jackson's album comes immediately to mind, Three Sounds as well, and there's scores more I'm leaving out. b, 21b, 21By the way, I like the idea of sealing a record in on all four sides so you have to "ruin" the cover in order to listen to the record. Maybe you can get folks to buy doubles, just to have an unsealed copy img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /1

ELO - Out of the Blue LPb,121/font1
Quote:/font1h,121b,121The large spaceship on the album's cover (by now symbolic of the group) was designed by Shusei Nagaoka and Ria Lewerke with Kosh based on Kosh's earlier logo he designed for the previous album A New World Record which connected with Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind fever. It also looks like a space station with a docking shuttle from 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).The number JTLA 823 L2 which is featured on the shuttle arriving at the space station is the original catalogue number for the album. The album also included an insert of a cardboard cutout of the space station.b, 21b, 21h,121
font class="post"1b,121b, 21The cut out space station could be set up into a 3D model on a cardboard plinth that sat on many a schoolboy's shelf when I were a lad. Kid brother broke mine IIRC.b,121b, 21The idea of recurring images throughout a band's discography is one that I heartily endorse. And the little bit of business with the catalogue number is quite neat.b, 21b, 21Who knew ELO were so deep.

Get a picture disc with a goldfish pic on it and package it in a clear bag full of water.b, 21b, 21Or do something with Dippin Dots.b,121b, 21The possibilities are endless really.

    Here are a few I have done....b, 21b, 21Silkscreened vinyl outer sleeve with full color jacket housed inside...b, 21img src="http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c218/Rockadelic1234/seo.jpg"1b, 21b, 21b,121b, 21Die-cut "wallet" with the shape of the gold badge cut out of the outer sleeve..b, 21img src="http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c218/Rockadelic1234/seom.jpg"1b, 21b, 21b,121b, 2112" x 36" two sided hand silkscreened jacket that folded twice to wrap around the cardboard jacket...b, 21img src="http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c218/Rockadelic1234/seomp.jpg"1b, 21b, 21b,121b, 21Four color, two sided 32" x 36" x 18" that folded into a box and held a 2 LP set with many inserts.b, 21img src="http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c218/Rockadelic1234/seompi.jpg"1

  • These are good! Keep them coming.b,121b, 21The Public Image "Metal Box" immediately came to mind (metal and all), but I'm not sure if it's too obvious.b,121b, 21I've been doing some interesting things with landscapes. Cutting long sheets of cardboard that look like mountains fading into the distance that you can fold out into a long one. One reflected in water as well, that looks lie a dagger or something when folded out.

  • The Feederz's Ever Feel Like Killing Your Boss LP also had sandpaper on the cover to destroy the record sleeves next to it:b,121b, 21 img src="http://homepages.nyu.edu/~alr237/feederz_everfeellike.jpg"1 b, 21b, 21I can't pictures of it, but Boredoms released a special edition of Vision Creation Newsun that was in a metal cube-like object; whenever you open the lid on the box, it would make little chirping frog noises (kinda like a music box).b,121b, 21Hafler Trio has always been really inventive with its packaging, that might be a direction to look in. b, 21b, 21Some of the early American Tapes packaging is retarded, but also kinda cool. (http://www.geocities.com/americantapes/oldstuff.html)b, 21b, 21There was an early NNF release that came in a clam shell and there was another one that came in a hollowed out book.

If you are trying to promote a new revolutionary type of floor tile made of asbestos, make a record to dance to and go ahead and stick a piece of asbestos in there with it.b, 21img src="http://futurefunk.net/img/scans/covers/random/driftstone2.jpg"1

font class="post"1b,121b, 21I've sat through quite a lot for this project. It's like any other genre I guess; 90% shit and 10% that makes it worthwhile. I've found one or two bands that are ok. Definitely like the slower, dirge-like numbers more than the total spazz-out demonic guitar jerkathons.b, 21b, 21But as I said, this post is more about weird packaging than anything related to the genre.

In Christmas 2005 or '06, I made a mix CD for a crew of females that I know. The mix was all sex- and/or female-related and I had my friend's wife sew together a felt sleeve that looked like ladyparts. Light pink sleeve, darker pink opening stuffed with cotton (to make it puffy) with a little shiny, translucent bead sewn into the top. On the CD itself I drew a cartoony tongue so when you put the CD away...well, you get the point. Perverted, I know, but they absolutely loved it. b, 21b, 21Unfortunately, I only made 10 for each one of the ladies. I wish I would've kept one for myself! I'm pretty sure I posted pics here back in the day but I can't remember where I uploaded them.
