  • I don't buy the McCain as "maverick" meme. It's an idea that he and a complicit punditocracy have pushed as conventional wisdom for a long time, but his actions by and large have revealed him to be willing to fold at a moments notice (note, his embrace, literal and figurative of Bush). The fact that he has been exposed as erratic and grasping this late in the game is his own doing (and undoing).

font class="post"1b,121b,121b,121This is what I was gonna say. From a purely news standpoint, the stock market itself might stop being the top story, but as it gets closer to the holiday season, there will be all kinds of stories about "Retailers are gearing up for a lean holiday" and "How to make your dollar stretch further this holiday season" and all that stuff. b,121b,121People will be reminded that they're probably broke.

b,121here was a guy who was smeared ruthlessly by Bush/Rove in the Republican 2000 primaries ("Cindy McCain is on drugs", "McCain has an illegitimate black child" blah blah, etc). It really damaged him and he claimed he would never to engage in dirty politics. Now with his decision to go with this "pallin' around with terrorists" crap, it's becoming more clear to me everyday that he's the guy who will do anything do be POTUS, including flat-out lying and now destroying his reputation. It's sad and disgraceful to me.

    b,121Not only that, he hired
i1the exact same people who came up with the 2000 primaries smears[/i] to work for his campaign. It doesn't get much sadder than that.

b,121I don't care who reads this after I type it: I will always have empathy for John Sidney McCain. As you all know, I voted for the man in the 2000 GOP primary. Like David Foster Wallace before me, I've seen the man undergo a change from a principled individual to the very exact image of what he decried eight years ago. It would be too simple a task to toss the man off as the sea tosses driftwood upon a shore, or to push him back into the gutter-home the McCain, the drunkard, the fanatic, circuitously yet deliberately opted for and thus deserves.
    b,121
b,121But I am a human being, and I see the ebbing spark of humanity within John McCain. The man's life has become a very real Greek drama in the process of concluding its final tripartition, and I'm not sure if there will be a god-in-the-machine to deliver a postlude. Honestly, if anyone cannot at least pause for a man struck down by his own hubris, then they truly are next in line.

font class="post"1b,121b,121A few weeks ago everyone was scared shiteless because McCain was leading and Palin was the only story being reported. And just to refresh your memories, the Palin story was that she brought McCain the Women vote, the Hillary vote, the conservative vote, the xian vote, the suburban vote...b,121b,121People on this very site were convinced that Obama was going to lose. b,121b,121I made a post then, much like the one I did above. Besides guaranteeing that Palin would become a liability before Nov 4th I also stated that she would soon be forgotten by the news media and something else would dominate the press. b,121b,121All I am saying now is that the economy will not dominate the news media everyday for the next 4 weeks. In fact there will be big stories that will force the economy back to the business section. b,121b,121Will those stories help McCain? Can McCain come up with another hail Mary? I don't know. b,121b,121But remember this; John McCain knows what it takes to win a war. Ha, ha just joking.b,121b,121Moving along. I don't see what promising to serve one term does to help him. Does it say, I am old and I know it? Or vote for me and in 4 years Palin will be president? Or does it say, I know you don't like me, but you don't like him either and I don't plan to stick around so you will get rid of me faster?b,121b,121I agree with Dolo to an extant. You can't be a Maverick and party hack at the same time. So McCain is in a bind. Because Mavericks don't have the network and resources that parties do. So McCain had to stop being a maverick and embrace GWB. But his real down fall with the press began when Steve Schmidt created his on message agenda. McCain stopped talking to the press in the back of the bus. He would only parrot the days message. Then he picked Palin and refuses to let he talk to the press. All that the press had left was a cranky old man who pushed through deregulation and the war in Iraq. b,121b,121The article contrasting the 2 campaigns was interesting. The reporter much preferred the McCain campaign. And suggested it was the better run campaign. I'm not so sure. b,121b,121My guess on why the Obama campaign appeared so disorganized is because Obama is b,1211) Obama is putting the local press first, channel 6 and the Daily Podunk are getting interviews while the national media are cooling their heels in a Miami hotel parking lot. b,1212) His campaign in Chicago know that public opinion is fluid. They are closely monitoring all the swing states. If they see an opportunity to capitalize on a story or event in Dayton they will send him there If they see McCain is running an ad in PA that has captured the attention of voters there it's off to Pittsburgh. b,121b,121National news guy is just pissed that the campaign is not about him.

  • No, if the credit markets stay frozen for much longer the real story is going to be the guy with an 800 credit score and a good job who can't get a loan for a new car. b,121b,121And that is only barely starting to happen. Give it a month (november)

They laid off a bunch of sales people and withdrew their donation. Now a non prof that helps some of the poorest folks in our area has less funding to do their job.

font class="post"1b,121b,121The real story is when that same guy with great credit can't get a loan for a new car AND has lost his job and can't get another one because everyone has frozen spending and hiring, and the same guy has problems paying the current loan on his old car and the mortgage on his house and his credit card bills. THIS is why people are nervous....it's not just about sacrificing the new car for a few months, it's about the complete uncertainty that we are feeling here no matter what your assets might be today, it looks like a pretty insecure time for the forseeable future.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Dan - economic woes may not be the above-the-fold headline every day b/t now and Nov. 4 but it's hard to imagine how it's not going to be huge. This is some shit that's going to HAVE to get uglier before it gets better. The Dow Jones news is the side show; in a few weeks, it's going to be more about how "ordinary Americans" (whoever they are) are getting hammered, what the gov't is trying to do (or failing at doing), blah blah. b,121b,121Think about it: the only consistent news we've seen the last few months have either been about 1) the economy or 2) the election. They are MADE for one another from a media point of view. On any given day, world events might push either/both off the banner, but only "slow" news day, you can bet both will be at the top.

font class="post"1b,121b,121that's's bait best not taken, IMO; asking that question makes the implication that "we" didn't "win" in Vietnam, and few things get old conservatives and veterans as riled up as that (accurate, if you ask me) suggestion.b,121b,121I guess the other implication would be: was McCain's contribution to the war effort decisive? But that's also a losing battle: Republican draftdodgers have managed to position themselves as better soldiers than Democratic veterans in the eye of the public; in that context, McCain's war record (however myth-based and magnified, as Faux and others have pointed out) is to be treated as sacrosanct.
