Gil Scott Heron - what's you favourite?

I think I know most of his records (if not all) but my favourite must be the Reflections LP. This LP is so versatile but somehow all the songs fit together perfectly. So much different flavours on that one.b,121b,121The other thing I like is that this was some of his "late" LP's and he still had so much flavour! This LP came out in 1980 I think.     Reflections (which is from '81) was the first GSH album I ever got, and I must admit, it holds up well. He's adapting to the times, but it doesn't come off as awkward as those Last Poets 1980's albums.b,121b,121As far as fave GSH elpees...most of them are pretty good. It'd be way easier for me to come up with "least fave" since the man was so consistent. Believe it or not, the weakest GSH albums I've ever heard were Winter In America and The First Minute Of A New Day, both of which were released in succession. I like everything before and everything after those two, but Winter is a one-tracker for me ("The Bottle"). Haven't played First Minute in a minute, but I remember most of it leaving me cold.

    Cosine on "Winter In America"; there's nothing there to come back to. Sit down and give this another listen it deserves it.

I honestly don't know what you guys aren't hearing, or what you are looking for. b,121b,121I think his live LP and 'Bridges' covers his mid period especially well. I recently downloaded a live set from NYC in 77 that is heavy on 'Bridges' material, and it's better than 'It's Your World', the official live 2LP.

    how is that 80's LP where he and BJ are in a studio surrounded by synthsb,121b,121it's at my local spot but kinda expensive ($10) and somethign tells me it's the type of record i'd be happy paying $3-5 for but is it really worth $10?

    The Album I return to the most is "Its your World".It goes way beyond just a LIVE lp experience.File this next to Curtis Live,and Bill Withers Live.

    font class="post"1b,121b,121I'm not talking about what it do for the dancefloor, I'm talking about what it do for ME...you're looking at it from the wrong angle. GSH has done guite a few excellent slow songs, IMO. Just not on that album

When I started getting into his stuff around 1990, the Flying Dutchman albums were hard to find, and this best-of was as close as you were gonna get. My copy is an '80s reissue on Bluebird with a different cover, but the tracklisting remained the same.b,121b,121/font1

    That was one of my first purchase, like 16 years ago. I was so happy wheni heard the infamous bassline of the now-infamous eponym track. But my tune is "did you hear what they said"...So much props for that song.

    Saw this a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/music/features/gil-scott-heron.shtml" target="_blank"1documentary/a1 a few years ago - it was pretty good. The Q&A was a huge disappointment. Don Letts is a pompous ass and the moderator knew nothing about music. Scott-Heron is a very charming and compelling personality - I couldn't take my eyes off him any time he was on the screen.

    lol - to be honest I hardly remember Mos Def in it at all and Chuck D was talking.1If Mos Def crossed that line, I have blocked it out. I am not sure it will tell anyone who knows about Scott-Heron anything they don't already know...really, the best part was seeing him speak and do what he does. There were some sad and frustrating moments, though, when he was clearly back on drugs.
