I got a live LP of his with Ammnesia Express, released early 80s. DLP. It has a live version of Angel Dust that goes for over 30 minutes.1They strip the track down and rebuild it several times, totally change the feel of the original, and theres some great Gil monologues and soulful breakdowns....b,121b,121I love all his works and albums but this one stands out cus he takes that song and turns it into a live journey into a journey into the heart of a drug addict...ive played it to sevearl friends battling them type of demons and its always left them seechless and teary eyed...

b,121= Believe it or not, the weakest GSH albums I've ever heard were
Winter In America....1 Winter is a one-tracker for me ("The Bottle").b,121b,121h,121

    b,121Wow!
    b,121
b,121 Winter in America is my favorite Gil Scott lp and one of my favorite soul records period.
b,121Agreed "The Bottle" is the only tune you might play for dancers but don't let this lp get by you
b,121because of that. "Your Daddy Loves You", "Song for Bobby Smith", and "Peace Go with You Brother"
b,121are 3 of his best tunes, beautiful stuff (I used all three songs over the years as my closers for DJ sets). Sit down and give this another listen it deserves it.1

b,121I'm not talking about what it do for the dancefloor, I'm talking about what it do for ME...you're looking at it from the wrong angle. GSH has done guite a few excellent slow songs, IMO. Just not on that album

font class="post"1b,121b,121You can snap your fingers and go "that's DEEP, brotha" all you want to...but I will say this: the Winter In America ALBUM doesn't move me, but the "Winter In America" SONG definitely does...it actually appears on his First Minute Of A New Day LP, a definite highlight.

  • So what's everybody's take on those two spoken-word albums that Gil did, The Mind Of Gil Scott-Heron and Small Talk At 125th & Lenox? Love 'em myself, they flow just as well as his music...

font class="post"1b,121b,121I love that stuff, it just shows how advanced he was. His facility for putting words to music as well as monologuing to great effect were fairly well unsurpassed.1And all without sounding like a total demagogue, he incorporates humor into his monologues without sacrificing the messages....really unique ability.

  • found og's in a local used book store. they have reissued "The Nigger Factory" and "The Vulture" as a single book. b,121b,121b,121peace,xavier
