Psychedelic Latin

I've been looking for fuzzy psych stuff in the Latin vein. The closest music that I can think of is Nico Gomez. Is there not that much of this stuff out there ? What I am really looking for is stuff that has obvious psychedelic elements but its backbone is Latin.

    Have you tried Santana?

Not even being funny, sometimes people skip the
obvious when looking for the obscure. And if you
are already down with Santana, try the Sapo LP.

Yeah, I got tons of Santana on deck. I'll try that Sapo. This was inspired by my boy playing the Nico Gomez last night at my bar and people were just going apeshit. I asked him if he had more of stuff in that similar type of vein but no dice. I bought that Roots of Chicha,'Psychedelic Cumbias from Peru" and it's really good but not psychedelic at all IMO. More like surf guitar noodlings and Farfisa over raw cumbia breaks, still great though. I am wondering is this just a strange anomaly, I mean it's not like salsa dudes in NYC, Cuba or Puerto Rico could give a rat's ass about psych. I know Nico made that LP in one of the Scandinavian countries so there's that Euro connection to an otherwise sound that came out of the Caribbean or Latin America. Any knowledge dropped would be appreciated.

maybe not much of a "Latin backbone"...

  • there were a few other cats doing it here. some salsa with psych elements too.

Tipica 73 has some descarga burners with fuzz guitar or keyboards, "La Candela" is one.
Flamboyan has a few tracks too, peep "Dame Un Tipi"

also check for stuff from south america: Peru & Venezuela in particular.

    Enrique Lynch
    Los Destellos

How about Flash & the Dynamics? One album (that I know of), on the Tico label. Sorta like Santana, only not as jam-bandish.

What about the Sound Triangle groups
like Pearly Queen & Wild Wind? I haven't
been lucky enough to find either yet, but
they are always described as "Latin Psych"

  • If you're able to track it down De Los Corvets "Para Ella" on Discolando is no joke. Fuzz for days.

theres no balls-on-fire-screaming south of the border fuzz on this, but pretty trippy...kraut-y latin. I wish I could claim I have dug one of these up, but alas I dont. The mighty W*l**n of Rehash hipped me to this...
    El Gusano

I gotta cosine on the Los Destellos, I have one of their LPs and it is a nice one....

The one Pearly Queen track I've heard ("Quit Jive'n") was straight-up chicken-chokin' funk, although the rest of their songs might tell a different story.

Funny you should ask, I just got in a dozen record package from Peru and there's a few psych-y Latin cuts in here.

The most obvious one is "Guayaba" by La Logia Sarabanda. The LP is pricey but the 45 is more easily procured and, to me, it's the best thing on there.

You might also check out "Pa' Oriente Me Voy" by Los Atomos De Paramonga - it's spacey guaracha.

Enrique Lynch's stuff isn't all that psyche-y...he's much more of a Latin soul/funk guy depending on the album.

True but I don't consider them very Latin. Their fuzzed stuff - which is great - doesn't have a lot of Latin elements going to them, in my opinion.

Traffic Sound's "Meshkalina" though? Bangin' on the psych Latin tip.

How about identifying who and what this is?

It's cool to get the soundbites, but without that ID, it's about as useful as tits on a bull.

Hey maaaan, I thought it was all about the muuusic??!!?

joking of course. It's by a group called the Mulatu Band from Mexico. Unreleased track called Cabala lifted off a tape. The one MeatyOgre put me up on it.

The Phirpo LP is solid from start to finish... Sonora Casino is a one tracker. If you have the means, get the Phirpo... it is SOOO GOOD!
