How many other big names are going to come out as a result of this whole thing?
If Spitzer is using this service then my guess is that all kinds of other high profile people were too. I mean, how do you think he found out about it in the first place? Had to have been recommended by somebody, right? I bet this is just the beginning and that a whole bunch of people didn't sleep too well last night.
News reports say that room 871 that night was registered under the name of a big Spitzer campaign donor. I can only assume that's how he got the Emperor's Club connection.
What is the main trangression here, the illegality of prostitution, the hypocrisy, or violating the sanctity of marriage?
The hypocrisy opened the door, made him a juicy target, but it's all about the money. Which is really what it's always ever about.
Why is nobody talking about John & Cindy McCain's history?
I mean, the guy goes out to Hawaii, meets a lady much younger and richer than he, cheats on his (then) wife, marries the girl a mere month after the divorce papers are in, then uses her fortune to fund his political career??
I'm trying to define the line here on what's considered acceptable adultery.

I think you mean that the investigation of his transfers of large amounts of money is what led to the discovery of the prostitution scandal. The brothel or whatever you want to call it, was only discovered as a result of Spitzer. The feds found out he was transferring thousands into shell companies. That led to the discovery of the website service, which led to the use of prostitute-informants, which led to wiretaps that nailed Spitzer. There is a reason why he appears in the affidavits as Client 9. It wasn't just a random coincidence. Not sure why you think this is about money? I think the public cares slightly more about the prostitution than his use of his own money.

I don't think adultery is the issue with Spitzer.....Bill Clinton helped psychologically decriminalize that in most people's minds 10 years ago.
Spitzer is only screwed because of the illegal prostitution angle...and his being viewed as a hypocrite.
Long and short...He went OUT OF HIS WAY to make enemies and act above the law as the AG. It clearly went to his head, and he thought he was above the law.
And, he ain't. And, the schadenfraude is THICK with Joe Bruno and on Wall Street this week.

But that's the point, as the Governor, his use of money is under scrutiny that you or I would never be under. Let's face it, people have been paying these gals and their 'management' for some time, and the Feds never became involved. He was under suspicion of essentially hiding/shuffling money, which for an elected official is highly suspicious, especially a 'crusader' like Spitzer. So in the process of trying to figure out if anything illegal was going on, the tie it to this escort service, and they solve the puzzle and get two birds with one stone (corrupt/hypocritical governor AND hookers going across state lines and even international). I agree that people care more about the hookers than the money, but that's what makes these fashion models hookers in the first place. It's about the transaction. And any criminal conviction will probably be about how he shuffled the money, NOT how he diddled a young lady and paid her for it. THAT's why I say it's about the money. There are thousands of people EVERY DAY doing the same thing he did on a much smaller scale, but the problem is usually seen as local and in the context of bigger issues, relatively unimportant. This bust does nothing to stem prostitution and the feds know it and aren't trying to do that, it's just a lucky by-product if it slows illegal business for a few days. This was about Spitzer's comeuppance, and he pretty much set it in motion through his vanity and arrogance.
So, infidelity with another woman, not so bad and forgiveable, but infidelity with a prostitute horrible and dispicable?
I think you're missing the point....Infidelity is a side issue...even if the dude was single he'd be in the same exact jam.
I was just thinking about the whole McCain, Clinton angle. They cheated on their wives and all was forgiven (seemingly at least). Spitzer messed with a hooker and he's totally fucked. I get what you are saying, he's fucked because he paid a prostitute, not necessarily because he cheated, whereas that's where McCain and Clinton got hung. So that led to my question in regards to the adultery. It seems to me that in the public eye it is more disgraceful to cheat with a hooker than a non-pro. The guy who fucks the hooker is a pervert, but the guy who is unfaithful with another person is just a flawed human?
yea, but there is no allegation that he was using government money. so "shuffling money", although in fact a crime, seems like it wouldn't be a front page story if he was doing it so that he could place bets on an offshore website (as opposed to bang high priced prostitutes). don't get me wrong - the gop would still have a field day with it - but i think the public probably wouldn't give a shit.
If the public frowns more on the Hooker angle it MAY [/b] be because the stereotype of a Hooker is someone who uses drugs/spreads disease.....and putting the wife at risk for anything from STD to HIV is scary to most folks?
Having a mistress or even leaving your wife for someone else requires that you actually treat the someone else like a human being and invest the emotional capital into a relationship. Cheating with a hooker is treating people like a commodity.

nah, people just love to feel superior...none of us here are any different. Keith is right that this is front page news because of the hooker angle, but the feds were on him about his money before they knew it was hookers. My main point is these days, it's VERY tough to take a stance like Spitzer took, you are just angling for someone to expose your issues, especially if they are in the present. If this was "10 years ago, he may or may not have paid for a $3k a night hooker", I think peole would chalk it up to enemies making hay. This is in the present tense and involves bad judgement on almost every possible front. A little something for everyone!

But we do treat people as commodities all the time, look at professional sports and modeling. Cheating is cheating any way you cut it, but there is a double standard. Contracting a prostitute makes you a perv with no morals, fuckin.g your sexy neighbor behind your wife's back makes you weak.

Yeah, but he is a lawyer, so we already know that's how he treats people!
if thats what you think, you better hope I'm not around when you get hit by a car or injured by a defective product.
I won't even give you my business card.
Hey, when was the last time i got a Christmas card from my lawyer? Even my Real Estate agents treat me like they at least want ME to think they think I am a person, not a check number!
Contracting a prostitute makes you a perv with no morals
. But window shopping is OK?
Ha! Also, it should be noted I'm not making any judgement calls. If people want to participate in prostitution that's their business. I'm just trying to get a picture of what America is exactly outraged by, the cheating, the hooker, or the money?
the reason sleeping w/ a prostitute is different than just cheating on your wife is because one is way more illegal
i dont see whats so hard about this. elected official breaks the law! Our society has determined that this is a serious crime. whether or not you agree is irrelevant. its not even comparable to someone cheating on their spouse

I can't answer for all of America but I'll give you my opinion.
I see cheating on your spouse as selfish and sleazy.
Divorce is too easy to obtain if you need to expand your relationship horizons.
I also see it as lying to the person who you SHOULD respect more than any other.
If a politician will lie to his spouse, I have no doubts they would lie to the public.....at least that's my opinion.
In this case I have to believe the cheating/lying had to also have a negative effect on his kids.....which sucks.
Personally, if you are single and use a Hooker I won't lose any respect for you.
