Cloverfield was exactly what I thought it would be which was perfect for me coming off a bad flu. I was looking for some mindless fun.

  • finally peeped this last night on DVD.b,121b,121I was impressed. they managed to tell a pretty complicated story within the confines of the home movie device, and it never felt too gimmicky (save for the few attempts by the camera dude to add some comic relief). the acting was actually pretty fusking convincing.b,121b,121reccommended.

I've seen a few shit movies in my life but seldom did I get so angry at myself for wasting a good hour and a half.b,121It wasn't actually that long since I had to start forwarding only 15 minutes into this mess. Lame pay-off as nobody dies nearly as slow and as painful enough as deserved and wished upon. Mosters looked like crap. Godzilla with a handicam. Minus the trash value. This was trash without any appeal and without even the trace of any entertainment value.

I thought Cloverfield worked whenever there wasn't dialogue involving the actors. Which is to say, about 10 minutes total whenever the monster, briefly, appeared. b,121b,121Personally, I thought the creature was well-rendered, especially in terms of scale.

font class="post"1b,121b,121yeah the scale was awesome; those shots from the helicopter and on the news were sick. agreed that the closeup right before the alien chews up the cameraman was totally unnecessary and took away hugely from the suspense built up by the earlier, fleeting shots of the creature.b,121b,121and again, I thought the dialogue "worked" well enough; they were just annoying kids screaming most of the time; the party scene could have been shortened but they needed a certain amount of downtime/ambient chatting/filler to keep from appearing as though they were stuffing the love plotline directly down our throats.b,121b,121I think it's hard to judge acting ability based on a movie like this or Blair Witch. because the non-reality format accounts for 99.99% of all movies, we are "trained" to judge an actor based on their ability to convey a character existing in "movie world" rather than the real world. The format of Cloverfield or Blair Witch totally shifts the benchmark. while we may roll our eyes and think "this is so fake" I actually think these kids did a decent job of conveying a somewhat "real" atmosphere. again though; it's hard to compare a performance such as this against a traditional movie roll I think.b,121b,121also I thought the taping-over the old tape thing was clever enough; it added a whole 'nother element to the story without compromising the autheticity of the device.b,121b,121oh, and the inclusion of this chick didn't hurt:b,121b,121

font class="post"1b,121b,121I'd always assumed that you were meant to feel that way about Cabin Fever - that Roth intentionally made the cast as dislikeable as possible. However, after seeing both Hostel films I fear that I may have given him waaaaaaaaay too much credit in his subtle switch up on horror cliches.

I hear you, but I can't feel scared or creeped out if I can't empathize with any of the characters. If I want them all to die, then it's not really doing what a horror should, you know? b,121b,121So should I see his other films? I mean are they actually good, suspenseful horrors or just a jump-in-your-seat-now-and-then gorefest? I didn't bother with the others becasue I thought CB was such a dog's breakfast.

b,121b,121The difference, to me, with Blair Witch is that the vast bulk of that movie takes place outdoors where the very environment itself is a character and therefore, even if the acting may have seemed 'meh', the viewer was still drawn in by just the pallor of dread that hangs everywhere. b,121b,121To me, this is what did NOT work with "Cloverfield" except in those shots where the sense of scale became evident. But there's a lot of interior shots - the entire subway sequence for example - which, to me, was patently uninteresting because the space was dull and the actors were annoying as F*ck. I think if they had kept everything at the street level, it would have drastically improved the film by offering a constant distraction from the dribble of dialogue between the characters. b,121b,121To me, my favorite shot came on top of the building by Columbus Circle, after they rescue the girlfriend and they're crossing between the fallen roofs and the monster comes charging in from the south. It made something the size of Manhattan feel frighteningly small and thus, vulnerable. b,121b,121Wonder what the sequel (if it happens) will look like.

b,121b,121I can't recommend his other stuff. I rented Hostel one night, and thought it was "meh" at its absolute best. Be spends too much time belaboring obvious points in the beginning, then it just devolves into the much-ballyhooed torture porn. (I did enjoy the little shoutout to Texas Chainsaw Massacre, though.)b,121b,121For some reason, I ended up renting Hostel 2 as well. It was not an improvement. b,121b,121However, the fake trailer he did for Grindhouse was fantastic.

I had reasonably high hopes for Hostel and, to be fair to it, it was an improvement on a lot of the new western horror films I see but it felt way too clinical - like Roth was ticking all the required genre boxes one by one. b,121Hostel 2 was a whole nother level of tedium. Not a lot of plot, no characterisation, and I wasn't even slightly shocked or scared once. It's amazing that a film featuring women bathing in blood and people having their faces mown off by buzzsaws can be dull but I was honestly bored to the point of tears.b,121I'm not a big fan of the torture porn stuff in general anyway, I prefer my horror slightly less exploitative and fun.b,121b,121It's a shame as I do think there's something there with Roth (the Grindhouse trailer is fantastic) but he's so lost in pastiche that he's forgetting to put together an enjoyable film.

Police warn about 'Saw V' marketing ployb,121b,121Oct 17, 2008 12:44 PM b,121Sunny Freeman b,121Staff Reporterb,121b,121A new viral marketing campaign for "Saw V" is scaring the wits out of some of its unsuspecting targets, according to OPP.b,121b,121A website for the fifth film in the series of psychological horrors allows visitors to enter their name and a friend's in order to generate a creepy message that can be dialled to any home number.b,121b,121The main characters in the films become involved in deadly games of chance. The phone messages play directly on that theme. b,121b,121"Hello, (name). Do you want to play a game? You think it's over but the games have just begun. I'm here with your friend (friend's name). My work will continue in a way you never saw coming. You won't believe how it ends. Let the game begin," the automated message recites in a low grizzled voice.b,121b,121These calls have genuinely frightened a number of citizens, including the mother of an intended target who called OPP to complain. Since Thanksgiving weekend, said Const. Tracey Bednarczyk, the Nottawasga detachment has received at least six calls from concerned citizens about the alarming messages.b,121b,121But what the marketers are doing is not illegal, Bednarczyk said, which makes the cases harder to investigate. "There are no threats made, so it's more of a nuisance phone call, but obviously if they continue they could be harassing in nature, she said.b,121b,121A disclaimer on the website reads, "The site is provided to give our users an interesting and fun forum in which they entertain their family, friends or colleagues... Please use your best judgment and be respectful of other individuals."b,121b,121Bednarczyk said the OPP is alerting the public to the source of the calls but, "there's nothing criminal in the message." b,121b,121"It's obviously a good promotional tactic," she added. "It's got everyone's attention."

I think I may be most freaked out by the thought of a fifth Saw film. I mean, seriously, is this like a real life version of one of Jigsaw's games now? "The umpteenth rehash of the Saw franchise will start on the screen in front of you in 5 minutes, you can avoid this fate, we have left a scalpel by your hand that you can use to gouge your eyes and ears out before the movie starts....."
