Collection-Buying Stories

1) I bought a big hip-hop collection out in Richmond over the summer from a dude who used to roll with Master P back in his Richmond days. It had a ton of junk records to sift through (some worthwhile stuff too), along with a fair share of real junk, including porno mags, tax returns, KMEL charts, drawings by young children, a broken turntable, two terrible PA speakers, and some handwritten lyrics that were awful.2) I "bought" two boxes of 45s off a woman in El Cerrito in March, who, when asked how much she wanted for the records, told me to find out how much they were worth and make whatever donation to KPFA I felt was reasonable. I tried to give her money but she didn't want it. Was $10 enough for a box of turds with one $125 record? I never listen to KPFA...:)3) Not a collection, but a fellow strutter got me into a locker in San Jose earlier this year, and the Mexican couple who owned it spoke very minimal English, and I felt like an idiot for my inability to speak Spanish. All we could really communicate was $1, 1 record.I'm sure you guys have plenty more stories to tell.

huge hip hop collection from a storage unit schemer. wanted me to wait a week while he priced my pulls on ebay because most of it was "early".....just some Enjoy and Sugarhill titles. he ddint want to check all the late 80s to mid 90s stuff i pulled. still have most of the collection. traded most of the common and semi rarez to TSL back when for store credit of 200 bucks or 2 records haha

5,000 piece latin collection owned by old latin woman whos husband passed. alot of dope titles. crazy Cotique. thousands of common funk 45s. didnt weed thru em all though. told me she wanted 2 grand for everything. i told her id give her 500 bucks. she was trying to sell Beatles turds on ebay for 500 alone. i told her no one will pay her 2 grand and to call me when my offer was good. she called me a year later accepting my offer and i told her no due to conditon

10,000 records in an old hippies barn. grabbed as much psych and disco as i could. then told disco John about the rest for a finders fee which resulted in a hip hop collection he just pulled in. came up big.

thats it. i am hoping to see a heavyweight 7,000 piece hip hop collection next week. i will def bring my camera if it happens and let u know how it goes

never really came up on a huge jazz collection. but i hear of em all the time.

So music that won't get you EBAY DOLLARZ doesn't deserve to exist??

There are surely plenty of places you could donate that stuff to.

Why does 3 piece Def Leppard lot (always) get to stick around? Thats not fattening your wallet or enlightening folks.

As someone is always lacking space and patience to deal, I gotta say cherry-picking collections is where its at. I have a lot of those stories.

I've had a few storage loads fall into my lap for cheap or nothing though, and it can be fun going through all the records I'd never bothered with previously and minting up on commons.

Most recently it was an enormous 90s 12" collection, crap for days but more than enough keepers to make it worthwhile (including a Biggie dbl LP boot I'd been looking for).

Earlier this year I got a 70s RnB collection for $45 that was mostly commons (hell, almost any collection is going to be mostly commons) but the highlight was a clean MJ Kirkland "Hang on in There".

I brought a collectin from this hillbilly in Akron Ohio who owns a soul food restaurant...when i got there he told me to come in the kitchen inside the kitchen was about 3 thousand records....as i am goig through them he tells me,,,, "I had about 5 thousand records from Heat Records that closed in Akron (not too far from his shop), cept he didnt have them any more turns out he used them for target practice...apparently he had someone toss them in the air in a field behind his store and he shot the records with his shot gun...

Heres another one a certian records dealer M*z* from Cleveland is riding down the street when he sees one of these street side memorials...pics,bears, candles on a street pole he then tells F*rr*st G*t*mG*mp to stop the car dude got out and asked a nearby person "Why is there records on this pole?" the girl replies "Apparently the guy he died like this type of music" from there M*z* pulls the records off of the pole and exchanges record covers with the dead guy....no bullshit

Yup. I scraped the cream off the top of the KUOP jazz collection for a pittance. Had to wade through innumerable Dixieland and 80???s jazz terds, gripping anything flippable. I do not envy the dude who ended up with the chaff.

ahh good times. that was the period on waxidermy i remember people were going at each other left and right if i remember right. something in the water i think.

as far as collections, i have yet to step into a good one. central valley has major turds. it's sad. i did miss out on one a couple years back that was pretty great. did end up getting some nice records from it though from the store that bought the sloppy seconds. disco godfather and seaquence for 1.25 ? yes plaese.

btw how do you guys hear about these collections ?

do you put out ads in the paper, hand out flyers, i know if you have a store people try to contact you, but how do you non store owners get in contact with good collections ?

is it all about connections ?

YES MORK I AM HOMELESS LIVING IN THE BATHROOM OF A STARBUCKS IN NEEDLES CALIFORNIA. IT'S GETTING COLD TOO. DO YOU HAVE ANY BLING BLING HIP HOP WEAR YOU COULD LOAN ME FOR THE WINTER? PREFERABLY SOMETHING WITH EMBROIDERED DOLLAR SIGNS?

  • the best collection I never bought...this guy paid me to "appraise" a sick sick Jazz collection, wouldnt let me buy any of it...just wanted me to tell him what each record was worth...he had Bill Cosby and Kareem Abdul Jabar on the line to buy and didnt want to get ripped off. CRAZY shit...multiple sealed copies of damn near every Eastbound title, Blue Notes for days...sucked having to handle these records for a couple weeks and not be able to get at them....oh well, got paid well to just dig..cant beat that I guess.
