I'm Calling it Quits

From smoking that is... 17 days with only one cheater while blacked out in Tahoe last weekend. This time I'm rocking it cold turkey style. Every time I tried before I did the gum and would just get addicted to that until I decided to smoke again. Any tips would be appreciated. I've been working out like a madman... seems to help a bit. Work's been stressful so that makes it tough, but I'm feeling good about it this time around. Just turned 27... don't want to be a smoker anymore.

it is rough but cold turkey is the only way to do it
here are some words of advice
1) tell yourself "you quit". dont say youre trying to quit. the negativity will put you in a place where you feel like you can smoke. the whole quitting thing is primarily mental so....tell yourself you are done. it helps.
2) the first week isnt that bad. its the following weeks. 2 weeks to 2 months. the hardest time. you will want one so bad. after meals. in the car. waking up. if you smoke weed...horrible craving. you just have to try to find something else to do in that time. i know its hard and its diff for everyone but its somethinng you hafta get through.
3) the third tip is dont let smokers in your environment. dont let people smoke in your car...house...etc. besides. after a while the smell will make you sick. i get sick to my stomach when i smell cigarettes. and i smoked for almost 8 years.
like i said its tough and im sure others can drop more science than me. but i just quit one day. told myself im done and that was it. tested myself and i won. i feel way better now. and cleaner.
good luck man
It won't be long before the stench really irritates you, and if you don't touch em it will only get worse... which is good incentive to stay away
Stay strong!
i know that sounds all smart-ass blah blah b/c you just told us, but keep it on the d/l. makes it more of a you v the itch. and when you cheat, its more obvious that your fucking yourself. i dunno. thats the only way i quit.
good luck.
FIGHT THE FIGHT HOMEY!
Wise words ... My experience was the same. Cold turkey all the way. Happily a non-smoker for close to 2 years ... Don't miss it at all - even in the depths of drunkenness/stress etc. etc.
either way good luck man. just think of all the raer you can buy from not buying cigs.

its almost my 2 year anniversary
can you send me something?
I support this decision. That's a man move. Be strong.
You're next, Z.
Sorry this is my quitter enticement program. Congrats though.
haha. i will quit eating fatty foods if you send me something...
im fucking around. nice enticement program though.
DrWu... that's very dude of you man. I'll keep you posted
I'm craving a cigarette after reading this thread.
Fuck all of you.
You can do it man.
- Always have some candy/chewing gum ready.
- Run or play b-ball.
- Remember smoking costs you around $40-60 a month. Spoil yourself elsewhere with that money. Records, clothes, shoes, good food etc.
- Don't go drinking with your friends who smoke. Fuck what they think.
- After working out... EAT GOOD (not all fried shit). Gain some muscle to replace that emaciated smoker steelo.
- Cut down on the caffeine for a little bit, esp coffee.
- Stretch.
- Find a girl who hates smoking.
- Exercise some more! Make being physically fit a priority in your life. Take up a martial art, or get obsessive about a sport.
That could easily drive the man to relapse.
just dont make it your reason for quitting!
I would love to quit cigs. but they have a hell of a grip on me, and i dunno if i '
can do it. My aunt still smokes after like 30 something years of trying to quit.
Fuck. i want one now.
awesome advice, I have to quit (yet again) because my doctor told me that I am setting myself up for an asthma attack and those are no fun, I crushed up my packet of cigs and threw them away, smashed up the ashtray outside and have told myself...only the green, that other shit is obscene.
The saving money you would have spent on cigarettes is an awesome idea, I have quit many times before and the longest I made it to was 8 months.
Some drama went down and I got stressed and started again, worse is, I had a scary asthma attack and was in Hospital for 2 days when I was in Australia last year.
I wonder if it really just is the hand to mouth movement that makes you want a smoke though?, when I gavce up last time, I would often pretend to smoke with rolled up bits of paper (don't worry people knew...lol)
Ahhh stoned ramblings...don't mind me
Good Luck to those that want to give up though.
although saying that having recently moved out from home after a long period of not being able to smoke around my parents, i'm back on the daily green. i can sense the shit catching up with me a small bit both mentally and physically, any tips to stay ahead of the game?
Try switching brands.
I wouldn't isolate myself though - you need to be able to turn it down, and realize that your decision to quit can't be forced on other people. You can excuse yourself if the smoke is too heavy, but don't stop kicking it with your friends just because. If anything, they should adjust to you ("yo, let's go outside, you know Ivan quit...") I mean they're friends, right?
You can do it. And you'll feel so much better. I am a lot heavier on the waist, I'm heavier on the trees and the drink, but all of that will change.
8 months out, I still get cravings. But I don't need it anymore.

So, when you start to get frustrated and aggravated at the world, just remember it's your brain chemicals that are out of wack, and it's all part of the insidious nature of the addiction. They'll start to return to normal soon enough. That, and avoid stressful situations, because you really don't have the chemical reserves to deal with stress without going downhill emotionally. For me, that meant avoiding all kinds of stuff for awhile - really just working and staying in for about two weeks. Then, things started to get alot better, and it was back to normal life.
Good luck. It takes a lot of discipline.
It's crazy... I've been working out 3 times a day the last few weeks and I'm still putting on weight. What?! I wasn't ready to throw a diet into the mix as I can only handle one battle at a time, but I may need to as pool season is rapidly approaching!
Also, I know drinking will make you want to smoke but to me, I feel like you should not cut back drinking, because you have to break your drinking--->smoking identification. If you curtail your drinking, then six months later you will have a drink and want a cigarette.
I never quit drinking, in fact every time I wanted a cigarette often I would sub a beer or a candy bar (or both), murdered my waistline but I'm clean from the cancer.
And now I can go get shitfaced and I don't really crave... well, a little bit.
Believe it or not, I've never smoked pot before. Weird, huh? No real reason either. I guess I made a decision a long time ago not to and somehow stuck to it. Now it's just on principle that I don't. Not gonna start at 27!
I hear ya on the drinking thing. My friends that have quit in the last year say that you never stop wanting a cigarette while drinking, but you can stop having a cigarette while drinking. I just gotta power through it... in order to be a non smoker, I gotta not smoke... end o story!
Okay, I've described this method before, and it isn't necessarily the wisest method, but it worked for me.
The LAST NIGHT ON EARTH TECHNIQUE:
Go out and get stupid drunk. Since you will be mixing EVERYTHING from wine coolers to tequila and Jagermeister, you must have a friend escort you on this quest. The reason? You ultimately WANT to get sick. Why? Because you will be smoking the entire time you are drinking--a minimum of three packs within a 3 hour period. Thus, hung over as FUCK and feeling as though you might cough up a lung, the association of smoking with feeling ill becomes an almost permanent condition--at least for a month or so. Thus, starts your quest. It worked for me.
