Did anyone see this over the weekend? We had to go online for tickets because of the line for this one.I haven't read the graphic novel upon which it's based, but the movie surpassed my expectations. Evidently, it's been getting some flack for being pro-war, pro-fascism/nationalism, pro-Republican, but I think that these people are reading far too much into the movie. I'm easily the most conservative among my group of liberals, but none of us left the movie thinking it was an allegory for today's conflict with the Middle East.I know we have at least one comic book guy on here, so I'm wondering what he's thinking, but if anyone else wants to weigh in on this one -- perhaps we have some folks who thought that it had some relevance to today -- here's your thread.I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

What did you find boring about it? I've read a lot of reviews stating that the killing is so stylized that it desensitizes the viewer. Is that your gripe?
Is there a lot of sodomy? That was the preferred method of encouraging loyalty and fraternity amongst Spartan soldiers.
Saw this the other night and while it was incredible visually, seeing stab chop slash stab chop slash stab chop slash stab chop slash for 50% of the movie got old after a while.
You threw your fists in the air? I was bugging off these kids going when someone's leg was hacked off so that image is pretty funny.
That would be Jon at Good Comix NYC
I eschewed the 300 crowds to see Zodiac last night (which I liked) but 300 seems like a movie that's worth catching on the big screen to get the full special effects and melodramatic comic book dialog experience.
i was really disappointed in it, and wanted to love it based on the previews...it just seemed so godamnned obvious and gungho, like watching some north american football movie. in terms of the visuals, i feel that besides the horse entering scene with the messenger, the best parts were in the previews, cause it was in small sequences, i could really feel the cgi as opposed to lord of the rings where the shit seemed so natural. maybe i was supposed to watch this movie at the imax?
what the fuck was up with the corny rock guitars? fucking hell, i guess it was supposed to give it some style or something, but i definitely didnt feel it. braveheart still kills this one.
ps: the blood spray was worse than mortal kombat on sega genesis when you did the blood code. at least in kill bill/itchi the killer it was intentionally hilarious.
I found an interesting interview with Gerard Butler who played Leonidis.
I can't believe this is the same guy:
I thought it was like softcore gay porn.
Was that RuPaul playing Xerxes?
"Nice thrust..."
Great armour. Just the thing for battling in freezing rain.
Did they blow the budget before they remembered costumes?
-Were all of those six (plus)-packs real, or were they drawn in as part of the graphic rendering?
-Call me old-fashioned, but why would parents think it was appropriate to bring any kid under 13 to such a violent movie?
-Aside from Xerxes, did anyone else notice at least two other transsexuals in the movie?
-Did people clap at the screen after the fight scenes in your local theatre?
-How about that Dominic West aka Detective McNulty as Theron?
I thought the movie was pretty amazing. Visually and enough story to keep it interesting. Thank god there was no real love story as that would have slowed the whole pace down for the movie. I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish, didn't really have to think too deeply about it and just had a good time.
Debating the merits on a broader scale of this movie, it's meaning in regards to the war in Iraq, etc would be like relating Cobra to the covert ops of the US in the 80s.
PS I think the dudes 6 packs were CGI'ed somewhat, because the shadowing looked slightly unnatural.
The two scenes that got the biggest reactions:
- When the freak gets decapitated by Leonidas.
- The sex scene when it went doggystyle (kinda). Theater went nuts.
Visually beautiful. Don't know if I'd watch it again, though.
Just horrible.
I don't know if the bods are real. I read an interview with the lead actor and he said he worked out intensly to get his bod in shape for the movie though.
I took my 8 year old son. Am I a bad father?
No one clapped during the fight scenes. Some people clapped at the very end.
I think during the scene where they took the humpback into Xerxes tent with the orgie it appeared to be some tranies.
Everytime I saw West I thought of the Wire, which at first didn't help, but then he was ok.
I think this review pretty much sums up what I am expecting from this movie:
I just saw a movie that???ll give your eyes boners, make your balls scream and make you poop DVD copies of THE TRANSPORTER. It???s called 300. I don???t know what the title has to do with the movie, but they could???ve called it KITTENS MAKING CANDLES and it???d still rule.
It???s about these 300 Greek dudes who stomp the sugar-coated shit out of like a million other dudes. I have a feeling that a lot of high school sports coaches are going to show this film to their teams before they play. Also, gay dudes and divorced women are going to use screen captures for computer wallpaper.
The movie takes place about a million years ago, and it???s sort of like a prequel to SIN CITY. Except way less guns and cars but twice as much skull splitting. I can???t spoil the plot because THANK GOD THERE ISN???T ONE. Just ass kicking that kicks ass that, while said ass is getting kicked, is kicking yet more ass that???s hitting someone???s balls with a hammer made of ice but the ice is frozen whiskey.
TWO COOL THINGS ABOUT THE MOVIE AND ONE THING I DIDN???T LIKE:
COOL THING ONE:
HEAVY METAL DURING BATTLE SCENES
Who gives a shit if the music isn???t historically correct? LORD OF THE RINGS could???ve used some Journey. This movie has that chu-CHUNG kind of metal that you hear in your head when your shift supervisor at Wetzel???s Pretzel is telling you that you???ll have to stay for clean up and you wish you had a sock filled with quarters in your hand.
COOL THING TWO:
FOES, MINI-BOSSES AND A BIG BOSS
Basically, the Greek dudes are fighting these Persian dudes, but the director, who must have a dick made of three machine guns, does it all like a video game. The Greeks fight every death metal video from the last ten years. There???s wave after wave of giants, freaks, ninjas, mutants, wizards, and a hunchback who looks like he???s got Rosie O???Donnell on his back.
Would I have been happy if Dom DeLuise from HISTORY OF THE WORLD, PART I had shown up? Maybe, but this movie more than makes up for that glaring oversight.
NOT SO GOOD THING:
DUDE NUDITY (???DUDE-ITY???)
These are Greek times, when there were a lot of naked women around. And there are some naked women in this film, but almost every naked woman scene has a muscular dude giving the screen an ass picnic. Dude-ity is something directors put in their movies so people will think they???re serious, I guess, and not just throwing in naked hotties.
Any directors reading this ??? IT???S OKAY TO JUST THROW IN NAKED HOTTIES.
Can???t someone make a movie about naked Amazons and call it PAUSE BUTTON?
My final analysis is 300 the most ass-ruling movie I???ve seen this year, and will probably be the King of 2007 unless someone makes a movie where a pair of sentient boobs fights a werewolf.

Did someone on here write this? It reminds me of certain strutters' posting style
WEAK ASS FILM ....
I WANNA SEE THAT NEW KOREAN FLICK ... NOW THAT LOOKS GOOD ... BUT 300 IS PURE SHITTE UNLESS YOUR A PIMP FACED XBOX PLAYIN JERK OFF
I haven't seen it yet, but a major co-sign to the sentient booby idea.
Amazing review!
I dunno why people are talking about the violence being a bad thing. Making a movie about the King of Sparta fighting against the Persians without shitloads of violence would be weak from a history aspect. Unless this was Disney flick with a singing candlestick involved...
