There's a Freddie Hubbard Live 2LP that has it's (slap bass filled) moments from the late 70's/early 80's as well as a Nat Adderly/JJ Johnson's 2LP "The Yokohama Concert" that was pretty good.
You mean sink not quite as far as the rest?
Sorry for the hate here but I haven't found any pablo jazz that is really fit to file. Except at Jack's. Maybe I am wrong.
Are we one step away from a flying fish or concord jazz appreciation?
Pablo's definitely got more of the latter than the former...
But off the top all I can think of that I own is a couple Dizzy's, "The Big Three", Mary Lou Williams and maybe Ray Bryant... and disregard these if you're talking ill beatz son
While I've never really gotten into Oscar Peterson, I picked this one up the other day for $1 and have been enjoying it a bit. Sometimes I'm not feeling this sort of trio jazz, but I'm digging this one.
I thought I made it kind of clear I was looking for anamolous
good/interesting/inventive records that stand apart from the
die-hard old-guard Ella vocal sessions and Count Basie live
festival joints, not trying to "big up" the entire output.
I have another Diz, with Machito, that is really nice, although
I don't know where it is and can't remember if it's a repress of
an older session or an original 70's LP.
Agreed - and I want to know what shit people think stands out on
the label, in any style. Most of the trad jazz stuff I've heard on
Pablo seems kind of flat and like dudes are relishing in their refusal
to give in to the fusion/funk/free styles dominating jazz at the time...
but I'd like to know what titles people have been surprised or impressed by.
The Diz/Lalo is a somewhat fonky session, but in a nice, laid back
and unique way - not like Buddy Rich funky albums!
That first Peterson posted does have a surprisingly funky track on it
12" for unicorn...
Best funky Pablo I've come across so far.
2nd would be the Dizzy Live at Montreaux w/ B Purdie.
Far from shhhh status. That's the Nat Adderley/JJ Johnson Yokohama live LP that Quo mentioned further up.
ok den er d??d........ er du s?? tilfreds pladen??rd!
Haha, I'm just pulling your leg, you didn't have to delete the post. I like that LP too. In fact I think you got your copy from a trade with me a loooong time ago. Or was it Woody?
I don't have the Dizzy/Lalo LP, but I like the Dizzy/Machito that SOI mentioned. I passed Dom Um Romao "Hotmosphere" recently. Is it good? I like the ones he did on Muse from the same period.
I think a Horizon appreciation would be the required in-between step towards Concord. Isn't Flying Fish a blues label?
Some of the pictures on Pablo records used to scare me. Like the bloated half dead Zoot Sims.
Anyways, I like the Dom Um record.
I quite like this one, forgot I had it.
Listened to this a couple of weeks ago at a local shop and even though it was only a couple of dollars I put it back.
come plsyoff time iam looking at your direction for a hockey thread
i like the label for what it is. the lps are always cheap and some are very listenable.
Sorry for my knee-jerk reaction. I fully support finding gems in the chaff, but really don't dig on pablo.

That Freddie Hubbard has a nice live version of Red Clay, from 81 I think.
Also, Dom Um Romao had one on Pablo? I have the Muse joint but never saw a Pablo...
this is the only one I've ever kept. All the others irritated my ulcer
...so are you going to "mention it" on soulstrut then or no? Or were you referring to the Nat Adderley/JJ Jackson joint they were talking about?
do i need to mention it?
it's the cuban one.
Dizzy, Purdie, Theilmans. Serious funky braeques SON!!!!!
$1 Bin hotness.
