  • Predictably, this thread deteriorated into "name every 90s underground 12" that you can think of" rather quickly.

Some may be slightly later than 2000, but for me these all fit in with that period when underground hip hop existed. Big cosign on East Flatbush Project, Operation Doomsday, Bush Babees, Big L (The Enemy!!!), Radiohead, 21 years, blackstar beats and Natural Elements...

  • I guess this isn't underground enough to be mentioned?

That Street Smartz cut w/ Pharoah Monche

    "Metal Thangz," I think.

"In my basement is an array of torture devices that slices the next MC that thinks he's the nicest!"

This was a great album. Likewise the Siah & Yeshua/All Natural albums upthread. Anyone remember the book that came with the OG pressings of that? There was a great short story about the death of Tupac in there. I saw All Natural in London not long after it came out and asked Capital D if he'd thought about making it into a movie, and he said they were looking at turning it into a play. Any Chi-Town types know if that ever happened?

  • LPS-m'fuckin-D.

I'm actually listening to that Ill Brothers joint that Flex was generous enough to shoot my direction as we speak.

    1st Grassroots 12"
    1st Pitch Black 12"

Very good call on both "Magic Chef" and "Verbal Attack" (prob. my all time fav late 90's indie jawn)

  • everybody's talkin about street smartz "metal thangs", i like it but always thought "problemz" on the flip is even better..

  • I recently dug up a copy of "Magic Chef". It didn't hold up as well as I had wanted it to.

That beat is a motherfucker though.

Perhaps you simply cannot identify with the lifestyle depicted in it.

What about Royal Flush, "Worldwide"--I think that's technically indie.

Da Grassroots feat. G-Knight - 'Drama'. Classic record, and imho, one of the best records to come out of Toronto.

Huge co-sign on Lord Sear. I still pull that record out on the reg.

Please be serious. This is what I am talking about.

I doubt even noted Kool Keith apologist BATMON will stand up for this Keith knockoff.

  • That Al Tariq record was pretty solid, although a bit dated now.

Yes. In Noz's defense, I think his IDM celebrity came at a confusing point in his life when he was--how do you say?--about twelve years old.

    East Flatbush Project
Did they put out anything besides Tried By 12?

There was another 12" w/ different rappers on it... it didn't really make an impression on me.

If there were no instrumental on "Tried By 12," I'd never have bought it. Their rhymes really did not do that beat justice.

    UR trippin'.
