My recollection of that M****e record is , probably why people don't talk about it. The break is aight, but the high hats are too tinny for me. Your chop is nice though, definatly put more flavor in the pattern.

The word dope is SO over.

Nah, I love drums breaks as much as the next dude. I'm just not down when people just loop them like it's 93' or something. All the hottest sounding drums are being fully programmed/played nowadays IMO (eg..Timbo,Dilla). Just make em' your own!

  • catalistcatalist 1,373 Posts
absolutely.. i agree. try to bring at least a bit of creativity into it. without that , really anyone can loop a break and suddenly they make 'sick hip-hop'.

does anyone use the word "sick" to describe something good anymore?

  • really anyone can loop a break and suddenly they make 'sick hip-hop'.

which is why it isn't cool anymore. in 93 you had to first find the breaks and then have equipment to sample/loop them with. Now you can download every piece you need and do the same thing drunk, blindfolded and on three valiums. Kinda lame in some respect, but at the same time it pushes people to be more creative when they have such resources at their finger tips. This is why we hear so many fully "programmed" songs now.

Speaking of 93, it's probably not a favorite of anybody's, but a sussex break i've used in the past that I haven't heard used a lot is 1993 by the Soul Searchers. Disconnected lil' dude or no?

    Hey,

I'm surprised that I've heard no one use:

    -"Letha"-Charles Earland.
    -"Don't Make Hurtin' Me a Habit"-The Marvalettes.
    -"Memoir of the Traveler"-The Jaggerz.
-"Dixie (A) March of the Conditioned Souls"-David Sancious.
    -"Danger Street"-Stanley Clarke.
    -"I'm Alive"-Tommy James & the Shondels.
    -"Mercy, Mercy, Mercy"-Buddy Rich.
    -"Strawberry Soup"-Don Ellis.

    Peace,

For real. That shit is hot. Can you make me a 20min long version? ha

Did you cop that Marquis lp? That clip I posted is a rip from an old radio show tape, hence the crap quality.

I did some blazing downtempo shit with it--I just ripped meaty's copy when he wasn't looking.

Here's one that competes with Synthetic Substitution, and can also be attained for under $5:

    REAL SCHITT

Compost. Can't say this shit even ranks on what I would consider to be tough/good breaks anymore, and the second one... man, tell a dood to tighten up! hahaha. I wish I had a soundcard. I like good drums.

Your braekz are fine. It's the folks using sendspace and yousendit to post up 3 seconds clips that have me all salty.

It's cool if you've never heard of zshare.net but it's the same basic concept EXCEPT you can listen to MP3s in your browser instead of having to download them. It's like the poor man's MP3 server.

Well, I knew that one was known, but I just got that
LP and thought it was a pretty ill break - but I'm also
no DJ/producer, so my ear is fairly untrained.
