Cats are buying it, as are Dogs. Turtles, llamas, and blue footed boobies too. His album will almost assuredly be the #1 selling first week of any hip hop record out this year, and that's in a large part because he's appealing to non-cats.

He's further beyond the accepted hip-hop demographic than before is why that is. Because him & B have got that "Urban Music's #1 Power Couple" thing on lock, Jay is now reaching "household name" status, and a new album by him isn't just an "event record" in hip-hop circles anymore.

I have to say that the record's grown on me a little. I don't see myself playing it as much as "Blueprint", "The Dynasty" or "Reasonable Doubt", which are his true classics for me, but I'm not mad at it. I'm not surprised at the generally favourable press it's receiving either.

You should double check the stats - I think you're going to find that this new album is getting low marks all the over the place: NY Times, LA Times, Wash Post, NPR and others. I'm curious what XXL will give it.

Ah, OK - in the UK it's been a different story so far. Most of the reviews I've seen have been positive.

Jay Stay losing these days. I think he confused.

The boy B stay dropping his "S"s--I think he confused.

    Sure, Sure...

30 is the new 20? Just Blaze is the new primo?.... I guess B-money is the new timbo? Or mabye Scyience?

Marley Marl calling the radio to say your shit is wack, Almost getting out rapped by jim jones (BRRRROOOOOOKKKLLYYYNN), ether made me stronger?

Jay Stay losing these days. I think he confused.

You really think that? Jay needs some better A&Ring, but he's still spitting like nobody else.

How is Jay losing when his album will sell more at Best Buy in one day than Jim Jones will sell the entire life of his record in every store in every city in every country.

He's winning on a level that's unheard of, so maybe you're right he's confused.

Sure, Jay's still sharp skill-wise, but part of what made him exceptional all around was his ability to start/ foresee trends, create or tap into unexpolited markets, and adapt to the times. At least for Hov, to use political rhetoric, he's a bit "out of touch". He seems to have misread the climate today if he thought this album would be deserving of the title "Kingdom Come".

It's a little simple, but I'm at least partly buying the mid-life crisis line. I mean, 30 isn't the new 20, just cause Jay-Z is in his thirties. He's trying to sell it and cats aren't buyin it.

Yeah, he needs an ear-man now that Dame and Biggs are gone. Or maybe he's just been in exec mode too long or his butter's spread too thin. (I just got the album yesterday, and I like it, but there are definitely few hit-you-over-the-head-immediately bangers...Hope it will get better with age like an opus one) If I'd bet on anyone to shake off that rust, though, it would be Jay.

The two things I will argue are that

1)Cats are buying it, as are Dogs. Turtles, llamas, and blue footed boobies too. His album will almost assuredly be the #1 selling first week of any hip hop record out this year, and that's in a large part because he's appealing to non-cats.

    2) As a 30-something year old, I can tell you, definitively, that 30 is the new 20!

Having now had a chance to absorb the album, I am going to cosign. Not Jay's best work, but far from his worst--and I appreciate what he's trying to do. I predict that this album will age well and will be more appreciated retrospectively.

Where do you think it will rank vis a vis his other LPs?

Too early to tell--plus, it's a very different animal.

If you want to play rankings games, I'll venture that it comes in near the very top of the list of attempts by 38 year olds to do grown man rap.

Well, we have to wait for the De La Soul album to drop in 2007 first.

  • wow...marley calling him out...

I agree...listened to the album...it's aiight....but, damn...when you have access to the greatest producers of all time (I mean dude can get beats from anyone)...why not hand-pick your "return" album beats a lot more selectively...just my opinion...

  • JZ: "Just Blaze is the new Primo to me. I love Primo but that's who I got the chemistry with right now."

I like "Kingdom Come" okay, but damn if I hear the chemistry with Just Blaze. The title song is a great chop job, but the drums are so lackluster and the other beats Just Blaze did are really sub-par. The only two tracks that really jump out at me (and the ones that seem to fit Jay's current style best) are both by Dr. Dre.

Also, somebody PLEASE try and tell me that Jim Jones is not 30.

right? this dude is acting like he's 21 or some shit.

    from wikipedia...

"Jim Jones (born Joseph Jimmy Guillermo Jones II, July 15, 1976) is an American rapper best known for being a founding member of The Diplomats. He is co-CEO of Diplomat records, which publishes The Diplomats' music, and is the director of A&R for Warner Music Group."

Kingdom come was a r&bish attempt more than a "hip-hop" album. Even tho' Hip-Hop is dead, Jay cannot fool me. The beat he BOUGHT for the intro is a fuckin backbeat for a syndicated UK love show. The woodwinds are just horrible. What a bad draft...And he means that he couldnt have Primo or Timbo instead of that ugly azz intro. I feel like there's a lot of "behind-the-curtains" shit that went on and people don't wanna talk about it. I know Primo is a bitter dude so he won't say what happened either. But damn, no chemistry??? What's that bullshit. Jay never gave a shit about chemistry. He just like a beat and pick it. He's not that gay so he needs chemistry. I don't buy that.
And hif JB work was unquestionnable (like it was some Breathe kinda work), then i wouldnt mind. But i didnt like my Jay Z LP. Funkin old azz rick james chop don't do it for me. It's nice for a minute, but i'm already bored because this Rick is just enough. I didn't need Blaze version. It don't add up. And i hate Oh My God. Mixing options, EQs, chops...Didnt feel it. It's just my opinion, but this LP needed some Hi-Tek, some Dilla (so her mother can cash some checks, i wouldn't mind), some Diamond, some Nottz, some JakeOne, some MOSS, damit...Expand your wings Jay.

co-sizzle, the only two tracks I would consider playing out. And I'm not talm bout "Lost Ones", either.

Im confused because how could a jay-z album be wack? I mean, im a pretty huge jay-z fan, but theres no denying the fact that this album is sub-par. The beats are weak, the delivery is ehh, and his whole swagger is off. He sounds like hes on the defensive and hes lost of big piece of his confidence. Kinda like prodigy after the takeover. I dont know what has him shook so bad, or if he just lost it.

But when you think about it, a couple years time is not enough to go from the black album to this. I honestly think that jay-z without dame and biggs, without rocafella behind him is not the same thing.

Ive no doubt that the album will sell amazingly well first week. He will push huge numbers because to most people hes the king of rap. But how long will it be before people realize the emperor has no clothes.

As a fan, i really hope he can get back into shape, cause theres nothing like jay-z in top form, but i cant cosign this shit sandwich just because i want to.

but on faux rills recomendation i will burn it and give it a go in the whip and try to listen with an objective ear. It might just be that i was expecting too much, i dunno.

Aight, see how lame dude is now? Mabye he just smells the rotting corpse of hip hop and is eager to jump ship as soon as possible so as to get more money. But he still looks hella gay doing it.

I'd like to know why so many rappers have got such crummy taste in rock music.

Because rappers are rappers, they're not "rocker dudes". When it comes to rock they just like what they like, and it's usually wack shit to a true rocker dude. Same as when a rocker dude is into rap, he just likes what he likes... he doesn't really know a cotdamn thing about rap music. I think this has been proven many times right here on soulstrut.

Yeah, I see what you mean. A lot of the time, rappers' taste in rock music usually runs to the kind of mainstream, regular-folks stuff that a lot of white people like too, whether it's Ice-T's love of Phil Collins or Jay-Z getting down with Linkin Park or Fallout Boy. But it's not like I feel they should be listening to some rock equivalent of "THAT REAL SCHITT" or anything - it just surprises me how few ever seem to be digging on shit that isn't of the regular Top 40 variety. Perhaps we just don't hear about it.

I don't think mine has any bonus tracks (and it is the special edition)--maybe that's strictly the European release.

  • I think the new Jigga album is indeed very average but it's still a lot damn better than anything that idiot Jim Jones has come up with, that's some funny shit about Marley Marl too,I actually have heard different about the Jay-Z/DJ Premier shit...I heard that Premo offered Jay-Z a bunch of beats for The Black album and Jay turned them all down which pissed DJ Premier off.

    I dont buy that.

The theory may well have been proven here but in my mind it says a whole lot more about individuals than any general rule.

I think it's fair to say that Jay-Z is clearly not a Music Lover. Linkin
Park..Fall Out Boy..does Jay have terrible taste in rock or are choices like this 100% about commerciality? I dont think anyone can say whereabouts the truth lies but I will say this - I truly love my rap, rock, soul, raggae, noise and whatever else, know my tastes and put paid to the theory that you can only be a specialist in one genre.

DJ Premier does this in pretty much every interview I've ever read with him: "Everything I listen to is that real schitt! You can't front on it! And I'm not just talking about rap--I'm talking about Cinderella! Poison!"

well, i remember he likes AC/DC .. and that's a damn good pick vs. Jay: Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy, Coldplay ....and doesn't Scarface like Coldplay too?

What's with tough dudes liking some sappy sentimental pop music or heavyhanded melodramatic drivel?

too much one-dimensional shit like minor-key Eminem beats.

or the Neptunes trying to write a decent melody (Tim kills them in this dept.)

eh.. perhaps I'll never get to hear if Premier has enough for a whole album of beats again (who does actual albums anymore?).

    Jay... Nas... pffff..Guru...
