Tributes have already started pouring in for the larger-than-life character.Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, who used a photograph of his family at Australia Zoo for his official Christmas card last year, hailed Mr Irwin for his work in promoting Australia.Irwin was heavily involved in last year's "G'Day LA" campaign."The minister knew him, was fond of him and was very, very appreciative of all the work he'd done to promote Australia overseas," a spokesman said.A Tourism Queensland spokeswoman said the death was shocking and paid tribute to Irwin's "enormous contribution" to his adopted state.Louise Yates said it was impossible to quantify how much Mr Irwin had meant to the Queensland tourism industry."I don't think we could even estimate how much he brought us through his personality and his profile and his enthusiasm about Queensland," she said."It would be difficult to estimate how much he was worth. And it would be difficult to underestimate."She said Irwin had been a larger-than-life ambassador."It's not just what he brought but what he took with him when he travelled, his passion."Australia Zoo, on southeast Queensland's Sunshine Coast, employs more than 500 people and attracts thousands of visitors every day.But Ms Yates said it would be "unfair and unjust" to put a dollar value on Irwin's worth to the state, because of how much he had given. Wow.

This is just wrong. Getting offed by a sting-ray is no way for a true croc hunter to go out. a damn shame if you ask me...

DAMN... this sucks... last time I went to his zoo up here in Queensland was with A-Trak about 3 years ago.... fuck, I went there like 5 times and each time he wasn't doing the Croc show... but everyone else I know that went once got to see him. Apparently he was a real cool down to earth dude... people are gunna feel this in Australia, especially where I live (his home state..)...

    R.I.P. Cobber...

    peace.

Oh damn! R.I.P. to a to a true wildlife legend. The part about the whole world knowing about it before his poor wife is .

  • Wow! Just heard the news on TV, can't believe it. Dude was straight fearless.

  • Australia is in mourning . He was a likeable larrikin and he was always just doing what he loved and being himself. I feel for his young kids the most

Gutted. He did such a lot of great work... I have a lot of respect for him and everything he did.
I was diving right where he was stung back in April - the Low Isles, near Port Douglas. It makes you think.
    Rest In Peace, Steve.

WubWub, I went to Mullumbimby and checked out the skatepark while I was there. Great little place.

  • terrible news & a terrible way to go

a few crocs & snakes on land that way too

    RIP

  • Bad, sad news. Australia respects it's larrikins and he was a fine example.

Mullum is a cool little town look me up next time you are around Byron Shire. We have started doing regular funk parties at Kohinur Hall (in the hills 15mins from Mullum) and it is surrounded by rainforest. Awesome venue and despite being in the middle of nowhere we got 250 people last Saturday night.

The man was a legend. I once read that he invested a lot of the money he earned from the worldwide syndication of his show by buying great chunks of native forest so that it would never be 'developed'.

the man was one of a kind.

    RIP.

    Yep, totally true.
He was a classic example of true blue fair dinkum Aussie goodness.
The kids of Australia are freakin out right now. Hard to believe he's gone.

this is bumming me out bigtime, I really liked this dude. And he's got little kids and all. RIP mate.

  • I just got back from a trip and this is what I find in the headlines. Horrifying.....somehow, I thought Steve couldn't kick the bucket for a long long time. He had 2 kids, a wife, and so much spirit. This is so wrong.

  • I remember watching one of his shows and he was on a boat near the south pole. Everyone else had on parkas and hats and gloves, dude was wearing shorts.

    RIP, dude was fearless.

  • This was a drag.
I got up to feed the baby at 5:30am yesterday (which was also my birthday) to see that he died, and we were the same age. I started to wonder if it was some kind of bad omen.
I feel really bad for his wife and kids. He seemed like a good guy.

Hey that guy lived a full life. RIP. It's a bummer. Let me be the first to say there will be a "Stingray" the movie. Again RIP

  • It's sad but at the same time very fitting the way he died. I feel sorry for his wife and children but at least he was someone they could be proud of. It's always a shame when children lose their parents at such a young age.

  • dude had balls for days (no homo). i always had respect.

from one animal lover to another: peace, dude.
