    cant wait!!

But it is worng to make fun of Rednecks, perhaps the trucker hat folks at that rodeo are open minded liberals...one shouldnt find making fun of them entertaining, that is wrong...I doubt Sacha Baron Cohen really "knows" what the south is about

I think he knows exactly what the South (or rural America in general) is about...
Like in that episode of Da Ali G show where he gets all the hicks in the honky tonk
bar to sing along with him...
"Throw the Jew down the well
So my people can be free..."
Cohen's take on some of our fellow countrymen seems pretty spot on if you ask me.

Well, at least you taught me that you don't have to be open-minded to be liberal. I'm sure you've met your fair share of ign'ant as hell rednecks that perpetuate the stereotype, I know I have myself. I'm just surprised you haven't met just as many/more that are just nice dudes and gals. I know that despite getting more than my fair share of shit homophobic, racial, and slight southern accent-related putdowns in Philly and Malvern in the last 10 months or so, that it's not representative of northern city folk as a whole.

(And yeah, I'm definitely seeing this in the theaters.)

I obvioulsy know lots of of "nice" and intellegent southerners, I have lots of friends here and in Texas, where I used to live. I also know the people who are my friends and are "nice", intellegent and open minded are in the minority. As much as I would absolutely love the south to be more like the very small pockets of these aforementioned people, I know it is never going to really happen. It is only going to exsist in small pockets of the large southern cities, and in college towns...shit, same goes for the north...I am not a self loathing southerner, but at the same time I am not delusional...the majority of the folks in the south arent Faulkner-reading, liberal, philanthropic, left wing intellectuals. I would never get ass-hurt over Hollywoods or any other media's outlet view of what the "south" is really like... flag waving, "love it or leave it" faux-conservative christians. The south, like the rest of the nation is really fucked up. I guess the statue of liberty holding the cross in the old neighborhood I grew up in is a figment of my imagination, as are the SUV's with "W the president" stickers all over them, and the homosexual "reeducation" camps that advertise here in town, and the fact Mississippi is closing down the last abortion clinic in the state and Tennessee isnt too far behind...Movies portraying southerners, rodeo and NASCAR fans as stupid and making fun of them doesnt really get my goat nor make me angry...I dont take it personally, well, because it is a fucking movie. They can reference "Hee Haw" all they want, doesnt bother me, because well, there is some truth in it.

That scene in the rodeo was shot in Roanoke, Virginia. I read in the Richmond Times Dispatch about it turning into a small riot and him having to be ushered out by security. From what I hear, the lyrics he added to the national anthem are . something about killing all iraqis, women, children, down to the bugs and bush drinking their blood.

I had another friend tell me they saw him on the subway in NY, but everyone recognized him. It must be getting tough for him to fool people.

after this movie he wont be able to fool anyone unless he thinks up some new characters.

when he plays the gay dude and gets all the jocks to show their asses and then tells them its for gay TV and they try to beat him up

    classic

While I'm definitely ashamed of how much more prevalent camps like that are in the south, the Dakotas, etc. compared elsewhere and hate that there is a very sizable vocal minority of the jingoistic flag wavers (Hey Geno's!) and Religious Right types, I just don't think you can lump everyone who supported an opposing candidate and/or don't fit a desired left wing intelligiesta mold as being the enemy/what's wrong with this country, but just another person of the huge moderate bubble. (I mean, when asked about abortion as a hot button issue - the overwhelming response isn't staunch pro-life, but more of who cares/minimal commitment to either camp.)

edit: And I have no problems with movies portraying Southerners as backwood yokels, because yeah, it has some truth to it. It's how it's perceived by everyone else that irked me, not unlike one of the reasons Chappelle stopped his show.

The South fucking sucks. It's the only place I've been in American where poeple are segregated by race/class and ignorant. Don't never waste you're time down here.

I was more irritated by the tired "crazy middle eastern dude with bad accent and wacky mannerisms" stereotype than the fact that southerners, feminists, and politicians were being made fun of by employing that stereotype. But then again I'm a white, middle-class, bleeding-heart liberal vegetarian who DJs Indian parties in the south so I might be biased.

BTW some of the most homophobic and racist people I've met south of the Mason-Dixon line are carpetbagging yankees.

NYC is the most openly racist place i've ever been.

no one ever said the north wasnt fucked up also...the ass-hurt white intellectual southerners complaining about how they are percieved by the rest of America is funny to me...Of course the south gets a bad rap, YES there are good, intellegent people in the south...YES I live in the south, YES I plan on staying, I LIKE it here...but I do know EVERY STATE in the USA is FULL of REDNECKS...leave a major US city in ANY state and you will find ignorant rednecks, the difference between the NORTH and the SOUTH when it comes to ignorant racist dipshits? THE SOUTH CELEBRATES the motherfuckers, the north is just hypocritcal about it...thats the difference.

Infortunately I wont be able to return to this thread until tomorrow, I gotta go do some stuff, but I am sure I will have plenty to read tomorrow.

No I would totally agree with that.

    But really...

the North really isn't much different because, like Eric said, as soon as you leave the city... trust me, racism/ignorance/all kind of hick-etry is alive and well in Jersey, Connecticut, Upstate NY, Long Island... just because someone votes Democrat or commutes to work in NYC or New Haven or Boston don't mean SHIT. I meet hicks in goddamn Massachusetts all the time. Dudes have farms, yell "don't tread on me", go to tractor pulls and listen to country. No fucking different. And this is where a lot of Demo defections come from, folks who used to vote with their state but see the majority culture further and further from their comfort zone.

What's hypocritical is these mofos that live in the city, vote progressive, donate to all the right orgs, march and demonstrate, maybe they even work for a non-profit or a university... yet send their children to all white private schools, live in monochrome neighborhoods and call the cops when a Black guy walks into the building (even when being escorted by a resident).

The news organizations and the crooked ass politicians would like everyone to think blue=democrat=liberal=northerner/westerner=atheist=fag, red=republican=religious=saved=tough on defense=southern/midwest=salt a' the earth, and that's the bullshit... this country is way more diverse in terms of political and social ideals but that doesn't look good on news reports and it doesn't rally the base.

  • the bottom line is that there are more intellectuals living in the north, as well as in the blue states. where there is less ignorance, you are going to find less racism, less evangelicals, and less people who voted for bush (assuming they don't have some selfish agenda).

The association of poor with ignorant is whats wrong.

In cause you were wondering, there was an article in the chicago reader where dude took on the argument in the book whats the matter with kansas which states that poor and working class people keep voting against their interests.

He takes a look at voting patterns based on various economic data and discovers that voting patterns have remained consistent amongst low and middle-low income voters for many, many presidential elections - basically a 49-51 split in favor of dems. The big shift in '04 wasn't in the lower-mid, but in the upper-mid, where people seem to be under a serious impression that tax breaks are really helping them out.

    http://www.chicagoreader.com/pdf/060210/060210_cover.pdf

OK so he's talking about the middle class, the point is a lot of people on this board are conflating poor american culture with the super-religious and the ignorant, and i think that shit is weak and inaccurate.

  • Damn! That is a lot of redneks.

  • Damn! That is a lot of redneks.

lol. Look at Travis County (Austin). A lil' blue speck in the sea of Texas red until you get down by the border.

Man I'm glad to read some of the comments above addressing the absolute myth of North v. South racism.

It's like Chappelle said, "The racism down there is Magnifique!" All nice and out in the open so you know exactly who the fuck y're dealing with. For the brief time I lived north of Mason-Dixon, I got quite a few shoulder jabs and winks of "knowingness" that I had to reply to with But please don't take this to be painting w/ a broad brush. There's stupid fucks all over this great nation.

    Fatback, y're funny man.

Was dick gregory the one who had that line about 'up North, whites don't care how big blacks get, as long as they don't get too close, whereas down South they don't care how close blacks get as long as they don't get too big.'? Totally misquoted but yeah.
