    1. Public Enemy
    2. Goodfellas
    3. Godfather 2
    4. Angels with Dirty Faces (great film, see it if you haven't)
    5. Scarface

Godfather 1 really should be up there but I'm not going to sit here and try and figure out where it places.

Honorable Mentions in the strictly-gangster genre

Scarface (OG), Untouchables (very entertaining but not to be taken seriously), Casino for sure, , Once Upon A Time in America, White Heat, Miller's Crossing, Carlito???s Way (maybe), Usual Suspects, Sin City

Honorable Mentions in the not-quite-classic-and-sort-of-gangster genre
Menance 2 Society, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, City of God

    Most overrated gangster
Donnie Brasco, crap film from beginning to end

1.Goodfellas-this movie is punk rock. it cut away all the grandiose imagry that the Godfather had popularised for gangster movies a decade earlier. godfather=the beatles, goodfellas=the clash.

2.Godfather 1- everyone loves pt.2 better, but i love 1 more because of the cop killing scene. that is one of the best, suspenseful hitchcockian buildups ever.

3.Godfather 2- greatest sequal ever that isn't named "empire', or "muppets take manhattan". would love to see the original cut that got booed at the sneak previews.

4.Scarface-the best remake ever. juelz and joe can call themselves coke all they want, THIS MOVIE IS CRACK.

5.Carlito's Way-yes, pacino speaks in a accent i've never heard a puerto rican, or anyone else on the planet earth use, but it dosen't matter. this movie should have got best picture that year. or at least a best actor for penn. the chase at the end is classic as hell, and de palma gets extra points for bringing jellybean in as a music advisor.

Honorable mention: King of New York, Heat.

    Killing Zoe

oooohh Yes! big cosign. and not just because Julie Delpy's in it.

but isn't Killing Zoe more of a heist movie? That should get it's own category, no?

I was tempted...my memory for film titles is awful, a bunch of
30's stuff I've seen I can barely remember - I was more tempted to
throw in a 50's French film ala Touchez pas au Grisbi or
Bob le Flambeur. That Warren Oates Dillinger is awesome,
    if you haven't seen it...

What if it ain't got Italians in it it ain't gangster?
    Jules said it best

    "...a

bunch of gangsters doin' a bunch of

    gangsta' shit..."

Pulp Fiction rates much higher than honorable mention IMO.

I have to throw "Once Upon A Time In America" here because I only saw one reference to it here. To me it is the best gangster movie of all time (tops even Scarface and Godfathers). Maybe it is because of Sergio Leone or Morricone's music, or the weird time structure, where it begins from the middle and ends in the middle with DeNiro puffing opium. It has an odd dreamlike quality all the way through and I love how it is not so much about family, power and moving up, as it is in the end about friendship. The scene where DeNiro's character ages 40 years in a few seconds is straight up classic filmmaking.

    Blood in, Blood out

Right there up there, if not better than AMERICAN ME!!!

  • blood in blood out was the wackest shit & soso fake, for the real story they bit watch American Me, which was such a real depiction of the mexican mafia several advisors for the movie were executed...
Blood in Blood Out, changed the gang names, had wack actors & was just bad, especially as a cat who grew up in & around this lifestyle, do yourself a favor & watch american me...

agreed...for purely entertainment value i have to go with Blood in...the characters: Mitlo--the guero whose down for his; Benjamin whats his face "El Gallo Negro" and his junkie bro; Popeye and his famous one liner; Big Al..shit they even name drop El Tepeyac and the Hollenbeck

Agree, Goodfellas is the best... I would be tempted to put Goodfellas, Mean Streets, and Casino all in the top 5. Marty knows gangsters.. err, except gangs of new york that kinda sucked.

In fact I will put those three in my top 5

    1. Goodfellas
    2. Mean Streets
    3. Casino
    4. Reservoir Dogs
    5. Scarface

    Sorry Godfather, maybe #6.

Dark Horse Pick I know a lot of yall have seen: The Long Good Friday (anyone have this LP?)
