DJing Abroad

So I'm trying to go to Europe in April/May but I have no money. But I figure with the advent of Serato I could just take my laptop and maybe get some DJ gigs over there to help pay for some expenses.Problem is I don't know any overseas promoters or anything like that, so I'm wondering if the soulstrut community might be able to help me out.Anyone know anybody who deals with this kind of thing? Anyone I could send a CD to? Popular spots I'd just go club to club with my CD?Any advice or leads on this would be a huge help and much appreciated.

    Is this a rhetorical question?

Sorry, maybe I need to be schooled in chat forum etiquette.

My name is Alex and I DJ pretty much everything from funk/soul to "golden age" hip hop and top 40.

Just wondering if anyone has tried to do this before and the level of success they've had, and/or any people/agencies that might be of use. Really anything pertaining to DJing abroad.

    Thanks

Sweet dude, we'd love to have you over here in 'Europe' nice of you to narrow it down.

im sure your style of top 40 golden aged whatever will go down real well in Slovakia or maybe Austria... then again Spain could be aching for your talents, come to think of it, Luxemburg or Estonia might 'feel your flava' more.

Its a real sweet idea to just bring a laptop over with all your phat beats and ill breakz.

i mean its not like there are any DJs in 'Europe' who have worked hard, paid their dues and are spinning in their own cities. (some of them even use wax! imagine that...)

Naaaa dude, what 'Europe' needs is guys just like you to come over and bless us with your 'clubrockin skillz'.

By the way, i might be travelling to 'America' sometime, do you know of any spots that i could play top 40 music? i also play Black music of all kinds.

    thanks for your insight.

why is everyone assuming that by asking if there are places he can dj in europe, this dude is saying that he is a superior dj??

AC_mo, seriously dude, try the VV boards you might have some luck.

And you can take my 1st post with a grain of salt if you like, but dude, NARROW IT DOWN, maybe there are some people over this way that can help you out.
If you are coming to Amsterdam, let me know. But yeah, a bit more info would help.

    Grumpy.

  • BTW, guys, I am also an American DJ with a computer. I'll one up AC_MO and say that I'm really good, so if anyone in Europe wants to fly me out there and pay me to spin, that'd be great. Thanks in advance!

If I get booked in Amsterdam, I'll buy NZShadow a new mop.

I'll one up Hogg and say that I have not only a laptop, but I have a nifty lil fan that goes under it to keep it cool.

I will also pay my own airfare and buy the promoter at least two value meals at an American based fast food spot of his/her choosing.

I've forwarded my rider for you/their perusal:

    1. electric power
    2. a semi-clean restroom (or not, promoter's option)

    Thank you.

Wow this thread almost went awry. Not trying to step on anyone's toes. As for specifics, I don't really have many. My girlfriend and I have enough money for a one way plane ticket and probably about three weeks of trains/hostels/food, but I'm trying to stay indefinitely. I'd basically go anywhere, Amsterdam would be incredible.

    Oh, and yes, I'm good.

I could send a mix anywhere anyone would listen to it. And I suppose I could buy a fan.

Read "indefinitely" as "a matter of months". And I'm just trying to work in a Bar or resort or something like that. Not trying to pay for my stay by DJing, just maybe a little extra money if I could swing it. Plus the experience would be incredible.

  • And I suppose I could buy a fan.

Good idea. Cashless has to buy all his fans (hence "cash-less").

I picked grapes and managed youth hostels when I travelled/worked around Europe. I did find that mix-tapes (this was in the 80's) were great presents and did get me some free drinks and hashish from time to time. No gigs though.

Dude, i think you are bypassing the pisstaking... Mostly by my Antipodean brethren... Ha ha..

You usually have to build a rapport with people, not just rock up at a club.
It's highly unlikely you'll egt a gig unless you have some kind of a name or become friends with the locals. Go visit the record stores that are into the same music & suss them out, but don't be pushy otherwise they'll just ignore you.

Most would rather give work to a broke local with records than some rich tourist with an iPod...

As they say on here: Post up a mix or you're soft.

That way people might be encouraged to check for you. Nah mean? Otherwise its like.. 'So who are you again?'

...next you'll be asking for an airfare...
