I've got the DVD of that - Sly was already BEYOND the deep end by the time he got to Cavett!! He had visible coke boogers dangling from his nose during his musical number, and the interview segment was a trainwreck. You say you watched it to wipe out the bizarre memory of last night's show? Shoot, to me it only REINFORCES it...
That whole Sly tribute was a mess. Fantasia and whoever that guy she was singing with didn't even seem to know the lyrics to "If You Want Me To Stay" so they just took turns shouting the title back and forth louder and louder at each other. And I understand that they probably didn't get to rehearse much, but it's no wonder Sly walked off during "Wanna Take You Higher", nobody seemed to know how the song went! He probably listend for a second, said "I come back after 20 years for this?" and went straight back home, and I don't blame him.
Anybody see the Family Stone members trying to spin it that it was planned for Sly to walk off halfway through the song? Nice try...
I saw it, she was feelin' it. Bono looked surprised in some moments, like, "Wow no one's breathed life into this song in years!"
I dunno - his voice is horrible and does not compliment hers (or anyone's) he should have stepped back once she came on. The fact that no one bothered to tune to her voice was a drag. No matter - she killed it.
The parade of dinosaurs was kinda depressing, I know the grammys isn't really the place to check for what's new and exciting, but most of those folks have been recording for over 30yrs. Not encouraging for rock.

Its funny, I could have sworn I saw Sly at Record Surplus about six or seven years ago. Looked more like the old Sly -- leather pants, tank top and a cowboy hat with rhinestones. He had about 60 records with him and was yelling at one of the employees about how he couldnt listen to his tapes.
Anyway, when I told my parents and all my friends, they were all assured he had died in the 70s or 80s. I knew I was right. didnt see the grammys (y'all acutally watch that Shit!) but LONG LIVE SLY
I've seen a lot of legends past their primes. So here is an extension of the ageist post.
I saw James Brown 3 times in the 70s. He always had a great band and show and worked. The first show I saw in 80 was one of the greatest shows I will ever see.
If James Brown was the greatest show I saw, Clifton Chenier was the second, despite having spent the afternoon on dialysis.
I saw Muddy Waters twice in his final years. Always had a super tight band who worked hard to make him sound good, and he had flashes of genius and energy still. Same is true for Count Basie and Sun Ra both of whom I saw shortly before they died.
I saw the Staple Singers a few years back before Pops died. Mavis of course is still great. Pops was the point of the show, so honest and direct. Sadly Mavis' sisters no longer can sing the harmony parts.
I saw Lightnin Hopkins shortly before he died. Very depressing, the bass player and drummer must have been on heroin, they were nodding off and paying no attention to him. He was oblivious to their oblivion and kept calling on them to solo despite the fact they never realized it. He was weak and should have been home in the rocking chair.
So why do Sly, and the Stones, and Lightin Hopkins keep embarrassing themselves? Why did Count Basie and Sun Ra and Muddy Waters tour until they died? Because in this country their are no retirement benefits for jazz and blues and soul artists. They have to work so they, their families and their bands can eat.
I was struck when I saw Buena Vista Social Club movie that Ry kept complaining that these musicians were not working. The main reason they weren't working, is because they had retired, something they could do in Cuba. No they weren't rich, you don't get rich in Socialist countries unless you are a party elite. So they retired. While we are on the subject Ry was lying when he went around saying that son and other Cuban musical forms are dead. All kinds of Cuban music are very alive in Cuba. The government supports music their in ways that soul, jazz and blues will never be supported here.
Damn. I forgot the grammy's was on. I ended up watching the Flyers. I wanted to see that too. Just by looking at the pics and hearing what went down. I still want to see it. I still think they should of brought out Al Green and did a duet of evryday people and called it a day.
