old, new, whatever. i've never gotten too deep into the genre, so what are some essentials, holy grails, whatever. (no comps, please)

  • Do you like dub, or vocal? Older, newer? Ska, rocksteady, roots, rockers/reggae, lovers, rubadub/dancehall? It's a huge genre.

  • here are some favorites of mine:

    Freddy McGregor - Bobby Bobylon

Earth, Roots, & Water - Innocent Youths

    Winston Riley - Meditation Dub

    Horace Andy - Skylarking

Hugh Mundell - Time & Place

    Barrington Levy - Poorman Style

Lee "Scratch" Perry - Roast Fish & Cornbread

would be good to grab an early wailers best of, such as African Herbsman on Trojan.

i'm not much into ska or dancehall. old or new doesn't matter much, just as long as it's something i can get with. any recommendations? cd, lp, whatever.

ok - i know you said no comps - but i have to tell you, two amazing compilations came out recently of Niney's productions...they're comps, but of one man's work, so not a comp-comp.

seriously - Niney is a quiet storm.
heavy, beautiful and not to be messed with.

  • thanks, i'll look out for those.

here's one. It's newer, but a gread dub record. Mad professor brings it!

  • I have been enjoying the shit outta this...High-C hipped me to it. For some reason it slides under the radar...copies on ebay go unbidded on (!?) I think its great:

Hopeton Lewis "gooving out on life" fucking killer versions of "funky kingston" and "express yourself"

  • Oh and a word on compilations, reggae records on original can be very very expensive, a lot is 45 only, condition is almost always an issue, and with old records still in print the presses are often done using reprocessed vinyl and old lathes, stamps, etc. and sound terrible. There's no shame in getting comps or legit, well-done reissues.

Any Light of Saba LPs. There's a nice new re-ish collection you can pick up if you don't have a thousand dollars.
