back on the internet after a long weekend in NYC (9 Pages of unread threads, jeeez)

Had the good fortune to visit Jonny Payczech at Good Records NYC, picked up a couple of things I wanted, left a lot of things behind that I would have loved to get:

The_Man??? multitasking while he hosts visitors to his shop:

All in all, it was a quality retail experience, there's a bench in the front of the store for my mother-in-law to nap on. My wife liked it too, but she was dissapointed that there weren't bins for 45s.

Other than records, there's plenty to do in NYC, here's the view from the apartment we were staying in:

  • Hey Tom, we took the 45s in back of the counter because of the earlier theft problems. Next time, just ask!

    Thanks again for stopping through.

bought too many records this weekend... missed buena and that makes me sad but its okay.

johnnie taylor - wanted one soul singer (stax)

this has got to be one of the realest Soul records ever. seriously. the production is superb with some great music. johnnie is unstoppable when hes belting the tunes here. ill vocal version of watermelon man, aint that loving you has a dope beat as well as sixteen tons. i could NOT be happier with a record. the perfect amount of funky tunes, soul, and ballads. this is a MUST HAVE for any soul fan. without it, your collection is ass.

  • That perry como picture disc is real nice, I gotta start going to thrifts over in jersey. Anyone know any spots in jersey city?, I've got a friend over there who I visit sometimes but we haven't had a chance to go digging over there.

    Anyway on to my finds...
Drove back to upstate NY for turkey day and hit up an antique store on 17 that I've never stopped at. I've driven past it atleast 30 times and always laughed at their billboards ("possibly the best store EVER.")

    LPs:
Eddie Kendricks - People... Hold On (on motown not sure if this is OG pressing)
    Kraftwerk - Trans-Europe Express
    Kraftwerk - Ralf and Florian
    George Benson - Space
    Yellow Magic Orchestra - X(infinity)Multiplies
The New Birth - Blind Baby
    Spinners - Mighty Love
Love Unlimited - Under the Influence of...
Perspectives in Percussion Volume Two (not as good as I hoped)
Joe Jackson - Night and Day
    Stevie Wonder - Innervisions
    Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Max Romeo - Holding Out My Love to You (keith richards on guitar, haven't listened to it all yet)

    12"s:
Teddy Pendergrass - Only You b/w Get Up, Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose
Whodini - Freaks Come Out at Night
    Newcleus - Jam On It
Unique Poet Supreme - Funk is so Good b/w Lyrically Climbing (produced by DBC from stetsasonic)

I might throw up some pics later tonight.

  • here's a dumb little dude question but how do you tell the OG "Death Rap" from the reissue? I'm guessing if I see it it's a reissue but just wondering.

    look at the letter "a"

the big one is the OG

you sure it's not the other way around? Mine has the same lettering as the big picture you posted but I find it hard to believe mine's O.G. What about the one-sided/two-sided stuff?

I bet the above stated flea markets weren't[/b] in Atlantic City.

As did I (another Tom from Cali). Good Records NYC had a great selection, and a nice vibe. If I had the cash, I could have easily dropped +$600 on records that I need. And strutters outside of NY, do not worry, JP ain't condescending in person. I took a few pics also, but it could be a while before I scan them.

Some Jersey/PA/NYC digs (all thrift, flea market, except for Good Records purchase):

    Off the dome:
Gilberto Gil - Volkswagen Blues (Good Records)
    Pookah - s/t (Good Records)
Soulstrut - Breakbeat Raer Ep (Good Records)
Electroglide in Blue OST - double
Strafe - Set it off 12"
Debbie Deb - Lookout Weekend 12"
Cal Tjader - Soul Sauce ... with a QJ "You've got it bad girl" record inside ???
    Astrud Gilberto - Beach Samba
Digital Underground - Humpty Dance 12"
Digable Planets - Rebirth of Slick 12"
+20 other 80's hiphop and electro 12"s from a donated DJ collection
    2 vintage & mint 45 cases for .75 each

The biggest score of all was a great and relaxing vacation to the Northeast. Thanks to the NYC folks who made my trip worthwhile.
