    nice 666th post!

until the ipod can show movies through a tv, the way it can currently do slide shows, I'm holding off.

I don't need to watch no music videos or tv shows on a tiny screen.

This is just an "in-between" product... nothing great, in itself.

Now would be a good time to buy apple stocks though.

i used to agree with that until i got my iriver...if you've been listening to music straight for 4 hours, sometimes u just want to stop and watch video...but the thing that sucks about that is that it totally drains your batteries...i think for that new ipod, it only gets by on two hours if you play video which is pretty horrid. another thing that sucks about video is that everyone knows that you are a 26 year old geek watching south park reruns. the other thing that sucks about a video mp3 player, is you're just asking to get mugged. anyhow im finding more and more i just want an mp3 player that plays music with amazing sound and has amazing battery life and is amazingly compact in size. as of 2005, there really isn't such a thing, sony is kinda of close, but i would save your $ for one year, there's all kinds that have various advantages over others, but none besides archivos as well are really well rounded, iriver used to be good, but they discontinued their good models.

its absolutely phucking ridiculous that in this age of technology the products lose support in 6 months and their batteries are so phucking awful. that goes for phones too...and phuck it for cars too. if corps wanted to build something to LAST, they could, but its all about the $acagaweyas.

however i dont think anyone should be without an mp3 player. i mean just listening to audio books is worth it. and today i got back from work in a really sheitty mood and i was just like what the phuck am i doing with my life. and then i selected Mitch Hedberg's comedy cds, and it was like dopamine in my ears.

pictures: with the camera connector, you can use your ipod as a storage device by dumping pics off your camera directly into your ipod. That is a pretty useful feature, especially when you're on vacation and don't have access to a computer.

videos: pointless, but then again, people have been clamoring for a video ipod for years now. Jobs wasn't the biggest fan, but who's to argue with consumer demand?

my beef is they've ditched firewire support once again, thus the entire line is usb2 only now.

ddr2 ram in the new imac, and rumoured to be added to powerbooks and powermacs in a week.

The picture storage idea you have is nice, but really. How often are you going to have to do that? Video on this shit is just going to cause the batteries to die faster and have a whole new "omg apple ripped us off on battery life" shit going on.

I don't see the point in having them Firewire now, especially since there's probably more people now who own a PC with iPods than Macs.

I wonder how many product upgrades Apple is going to try to squeeze out before the Intel-Macs come out...

Fuck it. Buy an Arcos, you can upload straight from compact flash, play vids, manage photos, music, you name it. Way better than my ipod.

it's a case of "biting the hand that feeds you" syndrome. The core business is still with cpus, ipods are great and all but Jobs ultimate goal is to increase CPU market share through the success of ipods. Going usb2 only is screwing powerbook/ibook/imac users royally, a lot of those being first time mac users. A lot of these units that are sans usb2 are only 2 yrs old, so I do feel for them. They can't easily upgrade to usb2 like a desktop user.

It's the vhs vs betamax argument.........firewire is technically superior but alas the production cost is also much higher than usb2.

Probably one more update for each product line........powermacs are rumoured to go dual core.

can you charge on usb 1? if not, then that's weak. 2 years is considered "old" for a computer though . it's weird cos nearly all centrino laptops ship with a firewire port and a lot of desktops do too. i guess it just comes down to a cost thing?

im wondering if it will be worth picking up a g5 on the cheap after the intel macs come out. apple's computer line is going to be pretty fucked if they drop the ball on these intel macs, huh?

The core business is in danger of falling apart. People are running OS X on generic intel machines already. Jobs NEEDS to diversify or partner up with some cheap pc manufacturer to make the upcoming mactel machines affordable for the average joe.

These kids know how OS x works and will keep modifying whatever build comes out. And they'll keep developing drivers for hardware...sound cards, video cards, etc. Dude's gonna have to rely on more than elegant design and clean aesthetics when fools can trick out their bootleg macs to run just as good (perhaps faster) and look even cleaner or better than the stock model!

bootleg macs are so golden age hip-hop.

Dapper Dan exclusive--> RAER briefcase promo-only laptop mactel running serrato for next level selectors...REWIND!!!

just don't put fuckin' spinners on 'em.

this new ipod will let you output video to a tv. that feature is pretty attractive to me. otherwise, i wouldn't care about having a portable video player. but i like the idea of dumping video to an ipod and running it out to a tv.

i can't believe apple dropped firewire on ipods. i guess it is starting to beat out firewire as the standard. it makes sense. usb is practically everywhere now. firewire still isn't. it's not that big of a deal (unless you only have firewire).

um no dude, it's nowhere near in danger of falling apart. That was back in 96-97..........

the development kit was cracked, but that is just the development kit, it won't be updated like the regular os is. Even if the commercial release is cracked when the official intels are launched in june 2006, apple will stop the crack. Then it's that back and forth game of crack vs fix, crack vs fix. Sure this might appeal to the hardcore l33t sp33k dudes but that's not what apple's focus is at. They're after the common joe who is fed up w/ having their systems crash on them w/ viruses and spyware. This is where the money's at, not the hackers. Time is money....

Also, the reason os x works so well is apple's tight leash on components. You won't get the full mac experience running os x on a self built pc w/ all these obscure no name brand pci cards and such.

Finally, I don't know how you can say macs aren't affordable now, look at the price points for mac minis. That says it all.

ummm.....the reason i need a mac right now is because im trying to escape the world of bootleg!! Been borrowing the studio's G5 imac and it blows my pc to shit.

But wait? This new ipod only uses usb 2? What the fuck is that? My pc is where all my music collection is. That would seriously impact my purchase.

Every Apple machine released after 2003 has USB2. (aluminum PowerBook G4, iBook G4, Power Mac G5, 1.25 ghz eMac, iMac, iMac G5)

apple site says usb 2.0 is recommended. so i guess it'll work with older usb connections as well.. (i think?)

  • mylatencymylatency 10,475 Posts
USB 2.0 is just faster than USB 1.0 and 1.1. USB 2.0 is backwards compatible and all of your old USB devices will work with USB 2.0 ports.

For those with old PC's with USB 1.0, I highly recommend buying a USB 2.0 PCI card for $9 and using it for transferring large amounts of files. Much more blazing.

    as your link subject suggests:

Connect iPod to your television set with the iPod AV Cable, gather up your friends, and watch slideshows together on the big screen[/b]. You can also hook the AV Cable to your stereo or powered speakers for a room-filling audio experience. The AV Cable connects to the headphone port of the iPod or the line-out port on the iPod Universal Dock.

I'm looking to watch movies though the tv, via the iPod... slide show is so 4th gen. iPod!

I think ya'll are sleeping on the video capabilities. What about old school hip-hop videos? that would be dope, especially with the connection to the TV? Or what about a movie on a plane, you know a movie you actually want to watch? Yeh the screen size issue is a problem, but I would not be surprised if they came out with an add on screen or something like that.

I dunno, it seems dumb now, but then again most people thought camera phones were dumb. I think its gonna be game cahnging.
