no journey til around #50?
All but the Guns'n'Roses, Nirvana and Bob Marley discs purchased before I was 18.
First band I ever loved - Beatles -Still love 'em
First heavy band I was ever into - Zeppelin - At one point in the early 90's I sold all my Zep stuff when I realized how much of their stuff was out and out stolen from old blues. Only starting to re-appreciate their sound.
Other typical 70's must haves - Fleetwood Mac, Steve Miller etc.
Only disc I'm truly embarassed to have owned: Guns'n'Roses
But I believe other members of my household own copies of the following:
4. Led Zeppelin IV, Led Zeppelin (Swan Song)[/b] - 22 Million
well obviously lep are pretty much the greatest rock band of all time. Jimmy Page was pretty much the soul reason i picked up the guitar at age 15.
9. The Beatles, The Beatles (Capitol)[/b] - 19 Million
is this the white album??? if so that's easily my fave by the fab 4.
18. Appetite for Destruction, Guns 'N Roses (Geffen)[/b] - 15 Million
seventh grade.. wore the tape out in my walkman from constant rotations... reminds me i need a new copy
22. Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin (Swan Song)[/b] - 15 Million

23. Saturday Night Fever (Soundtrack), Bee Gees (Polydor/Atlas)[/b] - 15 Million
you can't fuck with the bee gees ... classic material
32. Metallica, Metallica (Elektra)[/b] - 13 Million
i guess this was about 10th grade?? bought it.. hated it .. sold it. total crap.
34. Purple Rain, Prince and the Revolution (Warner Bros.)[/b] - 13 Million
oh yeah... soundtrack to my childhood
37. Abbey Road, The Beatles (Capitol)[/b] - 12 Million
i've got every beatles joint
40. Hot Rocks, The Rolling Stones (abkco)[/b] - 12 Million
i bought his at a yardsale for 25 cents but i don't think i've ever busted it out and listened all the way through.. prefer the stones in album dosage.
44. Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin (Atlantic)[/b] - 12 Million
47. Ten, Pearl Jam (Epic)[/b] - 12 Million
i think this was grade ten too.. my cousin gave me this record for xmas.. i nnever really got into it... promptly sold off.
57. Houses of the Holy, Led Zeppelin (Atlantic)[/b] - 11 Million
fave zep album fo sho
61. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles (Capitol)[/b] - 11 Million
70. Faith, George Michael (Columbia)[/b] - 10 Million
oh yeah back to grade seven.. i loaned my copy to a girl i had a crush on at the time... damn i want this on wax now...
75. Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin (Atlantic)[/b] - 10 Million
76. Legend, Bob Marley & the Wailers (Island)[/b] - 10 Million
when i was about 12 my mom's boyfriends son (who was a priest incidently.. the son that is) gave me a copy of this and PE's nation of millions on cassette. HYPE!
86. The Immaculate Collection, Madonna (Warner Bros.)[/b] - 10 Million
i have a sealed copy of this i pulled out of a large dumpster dive about 8 years ago.
87. The Joshua Tree, U2 (Island)[/b] - 10 Million
grade 7 again.. scary how many of these came out around the same time.. where's inxs kick???
total shit in retrospect.. but i was into them up to about rattle and hum then lost intrest.
Biggie
Hammer
and
Kid-Rock
haha.
I have the joints listed above. Have these because they are all classics and I still listen to them. The George Michael really is not "Classic" but there are still some good songs on it. Led Zeppelin sold a lot of records!
I've owned at some point or still have the CDs mentioned above. Why? Because I like pop music. This list reminds me of a lot of shit I need to cop!
P.S. I've never owned Thriller, only HIStory.
I like pop music. Shit, I was practically raised on #1 and received most of the defining bike injury scars on my body during the years that was in heavy rotation~~~ thanks mom!
Listening to Thriller (special mention Billy Idol/Pat Benatar/Van Halen) in stereo headphones= The first time records were to creep me out thoroughly.
Oh yeah, significance: it's Biggie's best album (just try to say something, you poptarts)
Anyway, here's the utter crap I own:
2. Thriller, Michael Jackson (Epic)[/b] - 26 Million
4. Led Zeppelin IV, Led Zeppelin (Swan Song)[/b] - 22 Million
6. Back in Black, AC/DC (Elektra)[/b] - 19 Million
10. Boston, Boston (Epic)[/b] - 17 Million
14. Hotel California, Eagles (Elektra)[/b] - 16 Million
18. Appetite for Destruction, Guns 'N Roses (Geffen)[/b] - 15 Million
22. Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin (Swan Song)[/b] - 15 Million
23. Saturday Night Fever (Soundtrack), Bee Gees (Polydor/Atlas)[/b] - 15 Million
34. Purple Rain, Prince and the Revolution (Warner Bros.)[/b] - 13 Million
37. Abbey Road, The Beatles (Capitol)[/b] - 12 Million
40. Hot Rocks, The Rolling Stones (abkco)[/b] - 12 Million
44. Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin (Atlantic)[/b] - 12 Million
57. Houses of the Holy, Led Zeppelin (Atlantic)[/b] - 11 Million
61. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles (Capitol)[/b] - 11 Million
63. 1984 (MCMLXXXIV), Van Halen (Warner Bros.)[/b] - 10 Million
64. Aerosmith's Greatest Hits, Aerosmith (Columbia)[/b] - 10 Million
75. Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin (Atlantic)[/b] - 10 Million
76. Legend, Bob Marley & the Wailers (Island)[/b] - 10 Million
78. Life After Death, Notorious B.I.G. (Bad Boy/Arista)[/b] - 10 Million
84. Tapestry, Carole King (Ode)[/b] - 10 Million
87. The Joshua Tree, U2 (Island)[/b] - 10 Million
89. The Stranger, Billy Joel (Columbia)[/b] - 10 Million
92. Van Halen, Van Halen (Warner Bros.)[/b] - 10 Million
Several of those were acquired for reasons of DJing (Thriller, Hotel California, Purple Rain) or for free (Tapestry, Abbey Road), but the hard rock stuff (and Billy Joel) I got cos I like them. Wifey has several more from that list. I don't think we bought a single one of them new, though, so I doubt we contributed in any way to the sales tallies.
Oh, I missed that one...I gave my copy to my little sister when I moved in with you.
Among my least favorite bands of all time, but after seeing this list they DEFINITELY qualify as most overrated band of all time
embarassed, really? I broke out 'appetite' just the other day. The perfect mix of drugs, women, and kicking ass. ...If thats your thing I mean.
-k
Teenagewasteland.
What's up with those dudes out to collect every top 40 single ever released. Ugh.
Interesting to see that Pearl Jam outsold Nirvana...yet neither topped Guns-N-Roses.
This quote made me think....I count exactly 11 non-white artists on here (and does MJ really count at this point? or lionel richie for that matter?). And that's out of 92 freakin' "artists"!!! Just sayin'.
This list is just one of those things that make you go "damn, dope music just gets no appreciation." I mean, don't get me wrong, there are some serious artists on here: Beatles, Clapton, MJ, Marley, Santana, etc. But the prevelance of acts like Brittney Spears and Hootie make it clear that this list says absolutely nothing about what music is or what good music is or whatever I'm not sure what my point is.
Just a little disgusted I guess. Feel me?
I own (or have owned) 34.
They are (including why and what):
46. Slippery When Wet, Bon Jovi (Mercury)[/b] - 12 Million
My grade school girlfriend, Nicole, bought me this album. I thought JBJ was a douche, but what can you do? One night I dropped 4 hits of acid and sat in my bedroom alone listening to this. WOW! shot through the heart, and you're to blame. I was high out of my mind. About 7am my dad pounded on the door and announced he was taking me to get a drug test. I remember trying desparately to get the eyeliner off (yea, dude, it was cool back then) before I opened my bedroom door. The lady who retrieved my piss cup offered me a glass of orange juice. Man, trippy.
43. Kenny Rogers' Greatest Hits, Kenny Rogers (Capitol Nashville)[/b] - 12 Million
I grew up in a country western family. I knew all these songs the moment I flew out the nutsack. And I hated them. Then I moved away from my family. Now I love them. Kenny Rogers, the song "Lucille" in particular, defines a lot for me. My grandfather was a farmer, his wife's name was Lucille, they had 4 children (and a crop in the field). It's weird how similar this song is to my family.
"GET THE LED OUT"[/b]
4. Led Zeppelin IV, Led Zeppelin (Swan Song)[/b] - 22 Million
22. Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin (Swan Song)[/b] - 15 Million
44. Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin (Atlantic)[/b] - 12 Million
75. Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin (Atlantic)[/b] - 10 Million
57. Houses of the Holy, Led Zeppelin (Atlantic)[/b] - 11 Million
I assume that every teenager, at some point tunes into their local "classic rock" station, and upon hearing "Stairway To Heaven" has an epiphany of epic, mind melting proportion. Then promptly declares Led Zeppelin as the greatest unknown band to everyone older than themself. "Dude, have you heard of this band called Led Zeppelin?"
It was the microphone placement on the drums of Physical Graffiti that really got me twisted. That album sounds so beautiful. When dildos who work in recording studios talk about turning up the "presence" in the mix, they are basically saying, "Let's give this tune a bit of Kashmir juice, shall we?"
82. Nevermind, Nirvana (DGC)[/b] - 10 Million
Good record. One I doubt I will ever listen to again. (o v e r d o n e)
3. The Wall, Pink Floyd (Columbia)[/b] - 23 Million
20. Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd (Capitol)[/b] - 15 Million
Equally, Pink Floyd played a part in my adolescence. I heard The Wall on LP first, but I remember riding in the backseat of some rich dude's car and he had the album on CD (which was a new thing back then) and I was amazed that the dashboard contraption magically knew when the songs changed. "But, dude, like, there's no silence but that thing just changed from 4 to 5!"
Also, the laser light show in San Francisco should be mentioned, and then quickly dropped.
52. CrazySexyCool, TLC (LaFace)[/b] - 11 Million
I had the most incredible encounter in a motel room while "Red Light Special" was playing on the television/radio. A favorite to this day.
9. The Beatles, The Beatles (Capitol)[/b] - 19 Million
37. Abbey Road, The Beatles (Capitol)[/b] - 12 Million
61. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles (Capitol)[/b] - 11 Million
George Martin for president. I owe my love of the Beatles to a woman.
2. Thriller, Michael Jackson (Epic)[/b] - 26 Million
I'll let Asprin handle this one.
6. Back in Black, AC/DC (Elektra)[/b] - 19 Million
One of the first few hundred records I bought. My skater friend showed me how to play "Back In Black" while we were hanging out in his room at 4am. I had to listen to his record through headphones 'cause he didn't want to wake his parents. He kept telling me to play quieter, but I was like, fuck you man, I'ma rock this shit (insert end riff here!)
41. Hysteria, Def Leppard (Mercury)[/b] - 12 Million
I bought a union jack sleeveless shirt at a local headshop because of this album. no serenade, no fire brigade...
35. Simon & Garfunkel's Greatest Hits, Simon & Garfunkel (Columbia)[/b] - 13 Million
"Soft." I could totally Kick Simon's ass!
8. Rumours, Fleetwood Mac (Warner Bros.)[/b] - 19 Million
On the ladies insistance, I bought this album in '04. I've made a chopped and screwed Too Short remix from it.
14. Hotel California, Eagles (Elektra)[/b] - 16 Million
Ralph Waldo Wankery at it's finest. Mystique has been the most over used word to describe this album.
18. Appetite for Destruction, Guns 'N Roses (Geffen)[/b] - 15 Million
Axl, Slash, Duff. My friend Scott had this tape, and he'd insist on listening to it any time we drove anywhere. It grew on me. I threw away most of my tapes on the eve of being homeless some years ago. This went that way...
23. Saturday Night Fever (Soundtrack), Bee Gees (Polydor/Atlas)[/b] - 15 Million
I bought this to be "ironic." (File Under: dumbyoungdigger)
26. Bat Out of Hell, Meat Loaf (Epic)[/b] - 14 Million
The first time I got hip to Columbia Record House I ordered 13 CDs for $.01 with no obligation. The first time I forgot to mail back that stupid fucking order form they send you I got this CD with an invoice for $18. I never bothered to send it back, nor any of the others (including Madonna's True Blue which I gave to my sister). This CD also marked my first time being sent to a collection agency. Thanks Meatloaf, you fat fuck!
34. Purple Rain, Prince and the Revolution (Warner Bros.)[/b] - 13 Million
My butch dyke punker cousin used to babysit me. And she would listen to some of those early Prince albums (with that song "Jack U Off"). It was pretty clear he was gay, right? Then I saw Purple Rain in the theater and left all confused. Apollonia was fine, though.
15. Jagged Little Pill, Alanis Morissette (Maverick)[/b] - 16 Million
I don't remember buying this, but I have the CD?
40. Hot Rocks, The Rolling Stones (abkco)[/b] - 12 Million
A good record.
47. Ten, Pearl Jam (Epic)[/b] - 12 Million
After hearing this was the greatest album of all time, I bought it. Ehh. I went back to listening to Fugazi.
63. 1984 (MCMLXXXIV), Van Halen (Warner Bros.)[/b] - 10 Million
ease the seat back... Diamond Dave. Owning this album was mandatory in the '80s, I believe. Prerequisite for using the words "melons," "boner," or "Owww!"
65. Best of the Doobies, Doobie Brothers (Warner Bros.)[/b] - 10 Million
Oh black water, keep on rollin'. I bet dCastillo is still listening to this shit.
67. Daydream, Mariah Carey (Columbia)[/b] - 10 Million
Possibly, I don't remember. I had a wealth of MC joints. Long story...
68. Dookie, Green Day (Reprise)[/b] - 10 Million
Local band. Played in every basement party in Berkeley. I would replace Spitboy for slot 68 if the choice were mine.
76. Legend, Bob Marley & the Wailers (Island)[/b] - 10 Million
I think this may have been another Columbia House album.
84. Tapestry, Carole King (Ode)[/b] - 10 Million
Dollarbincommon.
87. The Joshua Tree, U2 (Island)[/b] - 10 Million
He was so sincere in the '80s. "All I need is my guitar, three chords, and the truth!"
*HONORABLE MENTIONS*[/b]
11. The Bodyguard (Soundtrack), Whitney Houston (Arista)[/b] - 17 Million
Although I'd prefer to hear Dolly Parton sing it, that song really gets me in a guilty plesure kind of way. I never owned this album, but I never covered my ears when I heard it in absolutely ever supermarket.
39. Forrest Gump (Soundtrack) (Epic)[/b] - 12 Million
I had sex in the back of a truck at a drive-in the only time I saw this movie. Otherwise, I think Tom Hanks is a dweeb.
Why do people buy greatest hits albums? Don't they have the albums that the songs originally appeared on?
I'm thinking I should get some Pink Floyd records.
The Kenny Rogers was my parents' and as a kid I loved his songs. I took it with me when I moved out. These days, I put it on par with my grade four journal and Valentine's Day card from my huge crush of crushes (13-15 yrs old era) - Chris Way.
I'd argue with you that it's "hungry" and not "hundred," but I know you would somehow make it blowed-related!
"...housewives and little girls..."
what it means??!?!!?
