Open Sky is Dave Liebman's group on PM. Bobby Christian is like a small label Maynard Ferguson; big band with occasional funky moments. Friedrich Gulda is German third stream. "Daydream Door" is Baha'i progressive folk from Montana. Mike Johnson is a one tracker with a fuzz guitar led tune knocking city life.

This is one of the best boogie records I've bought in a while. Was still sealed.

    Nice find.

    Three questions:

    1. How much did you pay for this 12”?

2 Back in the days when this kind of music came out “we all” bought exclusively 12” vinyl on import in Europe. I am not surprised that the 7” versions are rare and super expensive these days, but I always wonder: for which market(s) were 7” boogie records produced and sold? Did they domestically (in the US) sell?

    3. I’ve had it a few times that I get contacted on Discogs by several people within a short period asking me for the same record in my collection. This can’t be a coincidence.  What are the discussion forums or online radio shows etc. where demand for certain boogie records suddenly gets created. A record like this has been known for a long time and compiled repeatedly and still all of a sudden prices go up...

    1. $45

    2. Lots of 7" boogie records sold domestically in the US. They weren't really called boogie at the time though. I believe they were all marketed and charted as R&B.

    3. I can't remember where, but one of the boogie guys or groups on Instagram or Youtube that have a good size following posted a video of this record. I liked it and bought the cleanest copy I could find. Based on previous sale history it looks like some quantity of sealed copies turned up not too long ago and the price settled around the $45 mark. It's worth every penny to me. If it were more rare I think it would go for a lot more.

A few finds digging around Houston last weekend. I've been wanting some Khruangbin and picked up the limited edition pink vinyl version.

I was digging through 45s at Cactus Records and one of the guys started playing it on the system in the back area. I grabbed it quick after hearing that first track.

Hells yeah. I wish there was more satanic funk around.  Especially around Halloween.

Seems like heavy metal white kids had the market cornered on Satan there for a while.

Nah these were mine, I just never got round to taking them with me when I left home... Until now.  Whole house is getting emptied, mum is too frail to be there alone anymore.

Jimster, are you in the UK or in Germany?

  • is "you are what you eat" that movie that had one of the teenage girl singers from The Cake do a gender reversed "I Got You Babe" with Tiny Tim? am I remembering that right or do I sound like a maniac? is that the OST?

Yes!  I owned this years ago and bought it again for a couple of bucks.  I first heard about it on Blaxploitation.com

A classic psych soundtrack if ever there was one, YAWYE is a great rocky garage record with plenty of chunky beats to keep dancefloors happy. Mostly rock-based, there are two outstanding funkier tracks, the wicked midtempo instrumental 'Painting for freakout' (by the soundtrack composer, John Simon) with big drums, bass and piano, and the excellent crazy Moog funk-rocker 'Freakout'. Recommended if you like a rocky or psychedelic feel to your funk.

Not bad for the local swap meet. It was vintage clothes day. They even had a DJ playing and he wasn’t bad at all. This is the first time I’ve been to a swap meet in a decade.

That Bonnie Dobson is really good. I remember that someone here (?) made an off comment back in the day saying, "BD is ill!". Then someone who I guess knew her on a personal basis said, "NO! She isn't!!! I saw her yesterday and she looked very healthy!". That was hilarious.

Anyhow, here are my weekend finds...

    From a local shop..

Top Left - The Marketts.  I swore I wouldn't buy a record just for a drum break.  California Sun starts with an uptempo break... i hesitate... middle of song, another break.... ok but I'm not gonna do it.... song ends with a drum break again. I say no and put the record back.  About a minute later I say fuck it, it's 6.99, and put it in the stack.

Paul Horn.  Worth it for the cover alone. I googled the lady that came up with the design. I'd like to know the back story on this. Like why this is the art they would come up with for music that doesn't appear to have anything to do with our lord Satan.  In the liner notes Paul says he heard some music from a brazilian guy and said "I must have him", and so they went out and got him, and this was the result.  A lot of Paul Horn records are super boring flute music, but this one is wild. In a good way.  And it was cheap, so i'm not mat.

Throb.  What is that thing in the middle though? Buttcheecks?

Hotel Hello - Album Art that's just a picture of a sunset is a real thing.  It's almost as if they want the album to be ignored so they make the cover as boring as possible. They could take notes from the Paul Horn cover lady.  Anyways, I've been trying to hunt down music that is like 'ambient jazz'.  spaced out, pretty... I'm not sure how to describe it or if is even a genre.  But there are a few cuts on here that are EXACTLY what I'm looking for. 'Vashkar' is amazing.  So is 'Impromptu' and 'Sweeping Up'.  The album is on spotify too.

Labelle - Solid funky soul with multiple denim outfits on the cover. And yeah, it's actually Patty Labelle.

Billy Hart - Enchance.  Most of this album is headache inducing free jazz.  Not my thing.  But I bought for one song - "Rahsaan is Beautiful", presumably named for Rahsaan Roland Kirt.  This is another 'ambient jazz' piece that is absolutely gorgeous.  I will pay 4.99 for an album with only 1 good song.  I'm looking for more like this so if anybody has any recommendations please let me know.

You are already up on the Chip Wickham stuff, aye?  I know what you mean, the stuff you want is kinda modal but without the braggadocio solos?

That Gary Burton has the "Wonky Donkey" cut on it IIRC that does my head in. But you have to blame Carla Bley for that.  She does have some other beautiful pieces that make up for it.
